Refuelling Boats
Submitted by southcoast on Mon, 2017-05-15 19:51This afternoon I went to the local servo to fill the new (seondhand) Bar Crusher 670C.
Jumped in the boat (no other way to refill) as the inlet is between the two front seats. Servo attendant refused to turn pump on - you're not allowed to refill the boat while you're in it.
WTF - I did 'ask' how she proposed that I refill the boat when my arms are not 2m long. Response 'company policy'
Anyone else encountered similar?
PS - went to another servo without any hitch.

Dawesville Cut
Submitted by chris1108 on Mon, 2017-05-15 12:49I'm after some tips re fishing at Dawesville Cut and Woodman Point. I was there most of last night, fishing off the rock wall to the west side and didn't get even a nibble. The tide was coming in the whole time I was there. On my way back to Perth I tried Woodman Point and it was no better.
I'm fairly new to fishing but not a complete rookie. Have caught dhuies and salmon in the past few months, but now chasing snapper, mulloway and taylor. I generally use paternoster rigs with squid or scalies, occasionally mullet. I've also done alright with slide baiting and soft lures, but my preference is to use fresh bait.
I check out the forecasts incl. barometric pressure. I thought with a low pressure system coming through last night would be a lot of bites in the Dawesville Cut? The swell didn't seem too big, but I'm not an expert about that.
Any tips would be much appreciated.

Last couple of trips from Hillarys
Submitted by z00m on Sun, 2017-05-14 22:54Friday 12/5
I had promised my boy a trip out and the Friday forecast was looking good for a bash after school. I got the boat all ready and once he was home we headed off to Hillarys. Got the boat in and headed about 2 miles NW and set the anchor on a light SW breeze and got some of Mick's berley clouding the water with goodness.
Earlier in the day I headed up to Mick's Shorecatch store to get some supplies and found my favourite pack in stock. I really like the offshore pack as you get a bit of everything and along with the Mulies, blue mack and mullet there was a monster squid that cut well into strips and also some occy. Surely something in all that lot to tempt anything being fussy.
As always seems to be the way when I fish with James, he is reeling in fish while I have yet to get a bait in the water! I always have a good laugh at watching him struggle with the 7 foot carbon noodle and 4000 reel that is his favourite. He managed to get pinned to the gunnel by a double header of skippy where the small one became bait for my trip the next day and we let the bigger one go as was his request.

We fished until almost sunset and he managed a few more skips for my bait and also some wrasse. He also got stitched up by something I had to go and help him with. I fought it for 5 or 6 runs before bringing a 4 or 5 foot long shovel nose to the side of the boat. After we had a look at it I held the spool on its next run and he was gone. We finished the night eating fish and chips at the marina. We were both happy with the few hours we spent.
Sat 13/5
The boat was ready from the night before and the forecast was looking good so I hit the ramp solo about 5:30am and headed west to my prospecting ground. The trip out in mostly darksness wasn't too bad with the NE wind behind me and the 19 odd miles passed without drama. When I pulled up to start searching the ground for signs of life it was then I realised the forecast was bogus and what was supposed to be 5 to 10 knots was easily blowing 15 to 18 knots. Dawn showed a blood red sun from the smoke haze and a lumpy sea.

I managed to anchor up and found to my delight the SW current fairly screaming. 8oz sinkers were barely enough to hold bottom and even then it was stretched out behind the boat. It took a bit of effort to make sure the baits weren't spinning and tangling the rig but I managed to get to grips with it.
There seemed to be a lot of pickers and any decent take on the softer baits weren't hooking up. That's when I remembered the occy in the offshore pack from the night before still in the esky. I sent some down with a mulie combo for some scent and bingo - a small baldie but at least it was size at 45cm.
I kept sending some occy and combo baits down and even though I had a few good runs and plenty of pickers I wasn't connecting. I run single hooks on my patternoster rigs but had one I made a while ago with a snelled rig on the top dropper. I put my occy special running 2 hooks and again this was the ticket for getting the hookup I needed. The prized pinky appeared after a short fight and again, not a huge fish but at 53cm it was good enough for the esky.

By 10am I had had enough of the crappy conditions and decided to head in. It was a long way at 12 to 15 knots straight into the chop but that was the confortable speed. By the time I got to the 3 mile the conditions were a lot better and I was doing 26 knots before I got to the marina. The kids helped me cook fish and chips with veggies home made style for mothers day dinner, so the missus was well pleased.

Cal's Baits
Submitted by Mick C on Sun, 2017-05-14 20:34Cal is heading to Kalbarri for his yearly holiday to fish with Tangles (Kalbarri Land Based Fishing Tours). Rob and Cal have been fishing mates for years and I’m looking forward to seeing the photos from the trips.
Fished a comp yesterday, and conditions were not as predicted. Looking at the final board it was a hard day on the water for all. Winds, currents and “pre-storm” conditions all conspired against, and average catches were certainly down. There were some good fish caught, but most of the very experienced fishermen described how hard it was. The northerly wind is “evil”.
My “mission” was to get Cal some fresh skippy that could be processed in packs for big mulla baits. Met him at the shop with the fresh fish, and everything was processed and packed for the trip. Some is also destined for Cal and Hutch’s land based metro baits over the next couple of days. Bring on the reports.

Will get the rest of Cal’s selected baits from our suppliers over the next couple of days.

Soundly spanked
Submitted by PJim on Sat, 2017-05-13 14:17 Was on the water at 5 am this morning for a run out the back of Garden Island with my 11 yr old son. We anchored in 15 mts and got the burley trail going, flicked out a couple unweighted baits and sat back and waited. Just as the sun cracked i had a hit on my rod but failed to connect. Rebaited and set the rod again, 10 minutes later my rod buckled to a good fish but I had inadvertantly left the drag too tight and the rod flew out of the holder never to be seen again
Shortly after my sons rod loaded up and after a dhort fight I netted a 60ish cm snapper for him

Things went quiet for a while and then line started spewing from the boys reel, he tightened the drag a bit and started fighting the fisj
H, this fish took quite a bit of line before he turned its head and made some ground back on it. Not long after I put the net under a very healthy 80 +cm pinky, the boy was pretty happy and hasnt let up about beating dad since we got back in

I am very proud of the fisherman he is becoming, plays large fish like he has been doing it all his life

Bore water marks on my fibreglass boat
Submitted by Dirt on Fri, 2017-05-12 17:06hey guys just brought a lovely new house with beautiful gardens thanks to our bore. Unfortunately after last weekend I left the cover off the boat until the carpet dries. My whole boat is basically now covered in borewater marks/stains. Anyone ever had this happen or know how to get it off. Seems pretty well stuck

New Product - Ultimate Burley Pack
Submitted by Shore Catch on Fri, 2017-05-12 11:52We have just added a new product to our range – the combination fish based burly / shredded mulies logs pack. This pack includes a 1.5kg fish based burley log and a 1.5kg shredded mulies log placed in an onion bag and vacuum sealed.
We believe that the combination of burley types (a shredded product and a minced product) works best. The pack also has the added advantage is that all you have to do is tie a rope to the bag and not have to physically touch the burley logs. A weight can also be added to the bag should you wish to drop it to depth.
This product is currently only available from our retail outlet in Wangara however, subject to interest, we may supply to our product stockists in due course.

good story from this morning
Submitted by Travis p on Fri, 2017-05-12 10:35went out from mindarie today in hope for some pinkys
we launched about 530am and where anchored and burleying by 6.15
the missus went to cast a bait from the boat when the leader got caught on somthing and took the rod and reel into the drink!
watching this $600 combo slowley sinking i jumped in after it..... missed it completely
now standing on the boat at 630am in trackpants and jumper both soaking wet both sharing some kind words to each other about what just happend.
time started ticking along and around 7am somthing took my bait on the other rod it was a big sting ray after fighting the ray for about 5 mins it came close to the surface attached to it was the braid from the reel that went over board.
turns out the ray ate the bait that was rigged up on the lost combo
i grabbed the braid and cut the ray loose however the sunken reels bail arm was still open so we starting pulling up the braid meter by a meter for 300 meters and then before our eyes the rod and reel came slowley up to the surface
what a story hope who ever reads this has a good laugh.

New Products, Latest Products, Deals & Back in Stock > June 2017
Submitted by Oceanside Tackle on Thu, 2017-05-11 14:57With some awesome weather over the next few days why not get out there and maximize it!!
One of our biggest sellers of late has been the B2 Shape Triple Glow 4" squids. For many years now shop owner Ryan Thipthorp has sworn by these when he used to use baits/paternoster rigs for demersals.
These add on squid glow throughout all water columns and its proven that glow products enhances your rig and increases your catch rate big time.
Ryan's family used to have a wetlining/commercial boat and when tested on the commercial dropper rigs the strings with these glow squids caught more fish and bigger dhufish in particular.
We sell them individually and in bags of 50.
We just unpacked a new delivery so why not pop in and grab some for your next fishing trip.

Salmon at Scarborough
Submitted by bradz on Thu, 2017-05-11 14:18What a day to be stuck in a conference.
Just before 12noon I was looking out the window at the Rendezvous thinking that a hell of a lot of weed has rolled in. It wasn't weed. At least 4 massive schools of salmon, more than the size of a football field each slowly moved north along the beach no more than 50m offshore. This happened over the space of an hour.
Seriously big numbers.
Sorry but I couldn't get a photo to accurately reflect the awesomeness of it.
Dhufish Handlining
Submitted by Boppo on Thu, 2017-05-11 08:27After a recent trip to Shark Bay I have rekindled an interest in handlining. Mucked about with a 50lb handline in 12 m of water and did well after busting off about three sets of rod terminal gear. Really enjoyed the fights and even had a couple of 5 ft sharks give me some fingercuts before busting off but great fun all the same.
Am keen to try handlining for Demersals off Lano and Two rocks. As the water is anywhere between 28m- 50m what strength mono would be best and how many meters will I need on a hand spool? Was hoping there might be a couple of old schoolers here to give me advice.

Vessel in Distress off Turtle Bay Abrolhos today
Submitted by Wazza79 on Wed, 2017-05-10 14:38Just wondering if any of the sea search and rescue members on here have any updates on the vessel in distress off Turtle Bay at Abrolhos this morning. Got a call from a mate in Gero. Apparently Craig from Saltwater Charters was in the area and offered assistance. Doesn't sound too good for the other boat though. Not sure if it was a commercial vessel or rec. Swell would've been pumping out there today too.
