image folders for different brands / models of sounder shots
Submitted by randall df223 on Tue, 2014-09-16 11:31Is there any interest out there to ask Adam to create separate folders for the common sounder makes / models. We can each then put sounder shots into the relevant folders and compare the quality we could / should be getting and discuss settings for that particular sounder?

Are Tailor spawning now?
Submitted by beachsoul on Tue, 2014-09-16 05:29At one of my local Tailor haunts I have noticed tightly bunched up schools of Tailor.
Does anyone know if this is type of behaviour would be indicitive of spawning.
I have kept 1 or 2 smaller specimens and have found no roe.
They seem to have been hanging in the same area for at least couple of weeks and are still keen to hit lures. ( Yahoo! )
Has anyone else seen similar activities in their area?

Advice needed for up north
Submitted by klaus heissler on Mon, 2014-09-15 18:27Hi everyone
I'm planning to head north from Perth for a 3 or 4 day fishing trip early next month, but I'm not too sure where's good this time of year. I was thinking about kalbarri or jurien bay. Did a bit of reading and got the impression kalbarri was more of a winter spot. Would I be better off going to jurien or somewhere else instead?
It'd be a land based trip, unless I can get myself and the missus a spot on a charter. Would really appreciate anyone's advice about where to go as well as local hot spots if you're feeling generous, as this is gonna be my first time heading up north. Don't mind beach/rock/jetty fishing/ballooning... Anything really.
PS Seasport is running a charter at kalbarri at the moment, would it be worth giving that a go at this time of the year?
Thanks

Bleeding fish
Submitted by woody on Mon, 2014-09-15 15:07How come so many pics on here, especially kill shots at home, have fish in them that obviously haven't been bled? Is it just rookies or is it some people don't think it matters?
I even saw a Queenie (blue Morwong) that wasn't bled.....these are a fish that REALLY need bleeding straight up...even gutting as well.
I remember catching 3 harlies one day and somehow only bled 2 out of the 3....the difference in quality when filleting was amazing.
Any thoughts?

great white on 60 minutes episode last night
Submitted by Howesy9 on Mon, 2014-09-15 13:45Dont normally post on here much but found 60 minutes very interesting last night on their report on great white sharks in shark ally off south africa. I thought it was amazing to see the guy in there who had been studying the whites for years was that confident with them to swim/ dive with them at will with out a cage. Dont get me wrong he had a great respect for them. Even the reporter Allison Langdon gets in with him for look. They also showed a shark deterant that they had trialled with great succes over there. The other marine biologist on there said that there would be lucky to be 500 of them over there which raises a point of how few there is left in the world compared to thier findings a few years ago.
Any way was wondring if any one else had seen it and what your thoughts are on it.
Here is the link on some of the report http://www.jump-in.com.au/show/60minutes/extraminutes/3784171893001/

Perth Metro Species Diversity
Submitted by Mick C on Sun, 2014-09-14 22:55This place never ceases to amaze me. Having joined the MAAC to participate in the monthly competitions I have learned that the Club rules for fishing competitions have been carefully designed to “level the playing field”. It is not the guy with the big boat that can go out wide and bag a big dhu, or the bloke that targets and brings in a heap of huge Sampson that will win the day. The rules provide for 2 points per species and 1 point per kilo for the total bag, with a maximum of 10 points for a Sampson where you can only weigh in one. The emphasis then becomes one of targeting lots of species in daylight hours and that is the challenge.
Being new to WA, this was indeed a challenge. After gaining a lot of knowledge from this site, spending a lot of hours on the water and talking to members, that have become my friends, my young fella and I are starting to learn. The main message is that to catch a range of fish in limited time on a set day with unknown weather conditions requires lots of different techniques (rigs and baits) at different spots that provide habitat for different species. Adaption to the prevailing conditions is also very necessary.
Anyway, we probably had our best day out on Saturday. Tried and tested lures for tailor around near shore reef first up, burley and bobby corks for herring and flashing lures for pike over shallow “patchy” ground, shallow beach with very light gear and small hooks for sand whiting and other bread and butter species, and then 20+m depth with burley on a range of “structure” for demersals and others using bottom bashing and floating rigs of various types. The image shows our bag (the competition day is the only time I would ever keep a lot of these – destined for the burley). We only fish near shore as we have a little boat.
Being an avid “pink hunter” that targets “missions” very carefully, it is really refreshing to chase other species on a given day when conditions are not ideal because the completion rules dictate that you do. I don’t care about winning, it is just nice to challenge yourself in a place that provides such diversity and quality of fishing experience. We still have a long way to go as there are a lot more species techniques that need to be learned – you never stop learning.

snapper deprevation
Submitted by suggarman on Sun, 2014-09-14 20:42eversince a coupple of years ago when me and a mate went out the 4 mile to chase pinkies ive been hooked. we landed 3 pinkies with the smallest at 2.5kgs and the biggest going the full 7.5 kilo and spent a good 2 hours using the last of the bait to catch and release monster skippy well over 30cm. since that day my winter time pinkie seshons have been put off due to football and other events and only had one chance last year where i only caught undersized pinkies and my dad took the glory baging a dhuie and a pinkiear i was kenn to hit them hard but study and work has kept me grounded.
who else has been deprived of pink snapper this winter so far?

Furuno combo.
Submitted by Fraser 5.25 on Sun, 2014-09-14 19:30Hi,
I know it's been done to death and I have been looking at all the old posts with the search function but I was wondering if anyone is using the furuno GP1870F combo. I'm looking for a new combo and I'm limited on space otherwise it would be two seperate units. I have measured the available space and I think that I can fit the HDS10 combo. I've used Lowrance combos in the past and would like to try something new. Everyone says that the Furuno sounders are good as fish finders and the Lowrance plotters are better than Furuno for charts and the navigation side of things. As the fish finder is the thing that will find the fish, I wanted to try the Furuno combo as the 1870F is compatable with a 1kW or 600w transducer and I want to start fishing in the 200m+. Is there anyone using this unit and are they happy with it?
Thanks,
Ken

Sounder Help
Submitted by C.P on Sun, 2014-09-14 17:04 Looking for some help with what I'm seeing on my sounder. This is my favorite fishing spot. I catch a lot of Dhufish here & not much else. (Although none today) Not that I'm complaining but I cant see any thing special on the sounder. There's nothing much different from the surrouding area as far as i can tell. So can you tell me what I'm looking at? Why are there Dhufish there? Knowing the answer might help me to find other areas to fish.

Swan squid
Submitted by Shimka on Sun, 2014-09-14 15:41I've never paid much attention to squid other than buying them for bait but I've recently started to get some interest in actually catching them myself. Is it worth trying for them in the lower sections of the swan at the moment, say from bicton down to freo or will they have mostly headed out with the colder water coming down?
estimated measure?
Submitted by Anonymous on Sun, 2014-09-14 10:02hi, a few months ago i caught this shovel nose shark and dident have time to measure it since i relesed it. how many cm's do u guys think this is and how many kilos?

It's not always a shark
Submitted by Simon C on Sun, 2014-09-14 08:19Was fishing in some serious tiger country in 25m in Exmouth in July when number 1 deckie hooks up. A few meters up he gets whacked and as you do up there you mutter an expletive towards the shark and try to pop him off. You could of knocked us both over when this bad boy popped up - 18lb and the biggest we have seen in 8 years of going north!

Boat from Sydney To Perth, Anyone driving back or need a vehicle driven over?
Submitted by rabbit22 on Sat, 2014-09-13 14:47Hi Guys,
Have picked up an 8.5 meter rib in Sydney and need it either dragged or carried across the flat.
Weight is about 2.8, width 2.5, length 29ft and 3m high. Trailer brakes etc and trailer in good nick.
Couple of options, either I can drive someones 4WD towing boat, I'll cover fuel or if anyone knows of anyone experienced coming back to Perth I can cover a fair whack of their fuel costs.
I have spare bearings and wheel, trailer and boat registered and insured.
Boat located in Parramatta.
Cheers.
