went out for an early fishing this morning with matt ended up bagging out with dhus and baldies. There was heaps of bait around and alot of sharks. Came in to have fisheries check catch and licences they was happy until i we all found out my wife didnt renew my licence like she said she did, so i ended up losing my fish and a $200 fine. Was all my fault for not double checking and i very good lesson. The worst thing wasnt getting the fine it was losing a baldie and a dhu.

I am thinking of using either this boat ramp tomorrow or going to the point perron boat ramp in Rockingham.

Anyone had trouble with break-ins etc and what is the security like.

Also what does the parking cost at either boat ramp??

Following the successful re-launch of the Hornet (see: http://fishwrecked.com/forum/back-water-25kg-quality), I needed to continue my part of the deal whereby I had to teach the “expert repairer” the techniques YPM and I have learned to catch the awesome WA pinks over the recent winter.  I have had the most success when the water is still a bit “dirty” following storm events and has planned tonight from a week or so out.  It seems a fairly regular pattern that after the fronts pass through it calms right down for a couple of days and once the swell drops to “safe” size, a trip out is really worth a shot.

Over the stormy period we added a few more upgrades, particularly the enhancement of the Minn Kota longevity by the addition of another battery to take “spot lock” duration above 6 hours on maximum draw.  We also found another small leak through the deterioration of a plastic live bait tank fitting that was also fixed.  There was also some corrosion of the tilt switch controls on the E-tech that also had to be fixed.  All were desired or minor maintenance items and the Hornet is in really good shape now, thanks largely to the great job done by Dean.

The plan was to head out at 4pm from Hillarys for the pinking hour.  The “Perth Pilchard Shortage” meant a bit of work to find the baits but we managed.  Unfortunately, YPM couldn’t come due to his footy team making the Granny this Sunday and he couldn’t miss training.  We arrived at our spot about 4.45pm, out with the home made burley in really nice conditions.

The first experience was the sounder “lighting up” with something really really big?  A couple of minutes later two whales surfaced near the boat and we were really pleased that we had Minn and no anchor lines in the water.  They were really close and I guess came to have a look at what we were.  People pay a lot of money to whale watch so I suppose we were privileged.

The burley started to work and on came the fish.  We caught some by-catch with a huge Sargent Baker, some Morwong, Skippy, and 20 minutes later a couple of legal dhu.  Not huge dhu but good quality, and eating, for a near-shore spot.  And then came the pinks, and more small dhu.

There is nothing like a good pink run in the late afternoon.  With the 2 dhu we could only keep a couple of pinks.  We were lucky that it was “all happening” so we could choose the ones we kept.  A 690mm and a 670mm went in the tank and we released a couple of 630-650s, after photos (below).  Unfortunately, I lost one that spat the hooks which was probably 7kg+ but that’s the way it goes.

It really doesn’t get much better than that and to keep my end of the “bargain” is quite satisfying.  My mates over east still can’t believe how good the pinks are over here.

 As much as I want to talk about shark culling/greenies/Colin Barnett etc.... I am to interested in wanting to catch mullet (not the blind or hairy species either!).

if anyone can help out with rigs, hook size etc. I would like to hear from you.  I have a couple of spots that can be fished with or without a boat where I see them fairly regularly in shallow water. I'll be using regular rod and reel as well as giving the fly rod a go (bought some breadcrumb flys for this).

Any good recipes are welcome also.

I got this today, not for me, but if you have a laptop etc, could get a HUGE screen going, even connect to a monitor etc.

The connecting to a GPS is the key - surely a phone could be used if people were wanting to be user friendly.

 Hi guys. Does anyone knownif the wire reef in Jurien Bay is ok to anchor up on? The Mrs actually wants to come out today but doesnt want to go wide so thought id give wire reef a bash. 

G'day, I've made the last minute decision to go fishing out at SW Bank tomorrow morning as long as the swells not to bad, and I was wondering where would be the best place to grab bait around 7ish in the morning or tonight if anywheres still open. I know I could get the average servo bait but I was after something similar to the boxes of squid you can get at tackle stores.

I saw on a fishing show recently that Mulloway are a short lived species (up to 5 years) and maturing to a breeding age quickly making them a very sustainable fish compared to lots of our local bottom dwellers. It got me thinking that it would obviously be better targeting the likes of them and other 'sustainable' fish and not so much the poor old Pink Snapper and Dhuies that lives for 30+ years.

So I thought it might be an idea for some of the guys on the forum to post up some tips and techniques for targeting such species for some of the lesser experienced fishers like myself. I mostly fish from the boat and really only target demersals as thats all I know, I wouldn't have a clue how to specificaly target Mulloway.

Anybody care to set the ball rolling???

Looking to head out to Two Rocks on Monday weather permitting looking to go 10nm west to north west in about 30-40meters of water, just going to sound around for new ground and try and spot some cray pots. Anybody be doing alright out that way lately like to hear some updates on the area.

I'm in the market for a new sounder/chartplotter setup for a new tub.

I have made my mind up on the Simrad NSS12 evo2 and a B175H-W transducer which I will run through a BSM-3. I'd like to install a transducer capable of dong some work in deeper water also.

Currently I don't fish in more than 120m, however I would not rule out giving 'deep drop' a crack at some point.

My current choice for the second transducer would be a B175L or M, but I am torn and have not found any information that points me towards either?

I'm leaning towards the M model, but looking for some feedback on it's performance in the deep stuff.

Would really appreciate some advice as I'm close to making a decision on which way I will go.

My 200 Evinrude ficht has blown a hole in the engine block. I had the engine (and starter motor) fully serviced at Chivers Marine a couple of months ago, on the second trip out after the service, I took Giggsy from this site (he was looking for a spare space on a boat) out just past Rotto for a fish. We were cruising back in, absolute glass water so we had the taps open, the engine seemed to lose power gradually so I stopped to see what was going on, topped up the oil and made sure that there was plenty of fuel - all was well. However, the boat wouldn't start back up - another starter motor issue!

The boat went back to Chivers to fix the stater motor, after replacing the battery cables, relocating the battery into a shiny new battery box and repairing the starter motor they called me to explain that there is a wopping great hole in the engine block (they didn't charge me for the battery or starter work to be fair). It's pretty terminal and I don't have the cash lying around right now for a new motor. So she's got to go, absolutely gutted, time to start saving and maybe buy a new one next year.....just got to sell her now....

I know there has been plenty of questions on Shark Bay in the past but we are heading there shortly and have been told that there is a reef on the west side of Denham Sound?? We have been there a few times and always caught fish around the markers and on Monkey Mia side, usual Pink and Black snapper and macks but I wouldnt mind trying (if there is a reef) for a few of the reefy variety. I believe the only other options for reef are a fair way out ie turtle bay or Steep Point.

Does anyone have any clues??
