Albany - Boat Fishing - Tips or Suggestions
Submitted by trueblue_10 on Mon, 2013-12-16 05:52Heading down to Albany for 2 weeks last week of January and 1st week of feb with the family. I have a Ally 6.1 Ocean Sport Quintrex. Will be staying at Emu Point. Want to do some fishing with my 17 yr old son and hopefully find some reasonable ground.
Looking for anyone who fishes from Albany from a a boat if they would kindly give me some general tips which direction to head and depth to be in to get to reasonable deepsea fishing ground etc. Will be launching from Emu Point mostly unless I get other suggestions. PM me if you would rather keep it off the forum. Happy to receive some starter co-ordinates to get me going etc :-)
Also appreciate any advice for in close fishing like squid, KGs and crabs etc. Never fished this area before so any general tips - dangers to watch for - what to expect etc will be really appreciated.
Also if anyone is down that way around that time and would like another boat as company happy to go out with them just PM me your details so I can get in touch.
What depth is the Crays at the moment ..
Submitted by Casa on Sun, 2013-12-15 21:20Got pots out behind garden Island and Carnac in 34m of water but not getting much is anyone got there's out that way if so what depth the Crays at the moment..

Submitted by TAPOUT on Sun, 2013-12-15 19:07Left Mindarie early on the hunt for KGs. 10nm out and been doing the same drift in one area for 3 hours. Some f%#ckwit decides to pull up approx 100 mts up wind from my drift. You have got to be jokeing.
On a side note picked up 1 king george and succefully released 9 Dhus. Couldn't get away from them. The ban is obviously working well for the breeding.

Realllllly sux !!!!!!!
Submitted by tailor marc on Sun, 2013-12-15 17:53Well went down to Bunno to visit Lisa's family in Myalup. Took the boat out Saturday and what a day!!! Got close to whales, watched them breach etc. Crazy but the day was marred in sadness as i took the light rod, fitted it out with small gangs and half a mulie hoping for big skippy but my main target was big flathead . Of all the fish i have caught she loved flathead the most so we found some flat sandy bottom in 12 meters of water, Dropped my bait and left it on the bottom as i played wth the gopro then the rood went off hard! I was hooked onto what i thought was a sambo. As it got close all my nightmares came through as soon as i seen pink. Friggen big snapper and i knew it had to go back!!!!!!!
Quick couple pics and held it in the water it gave a huge tail wash and darted for the bottom safe. Oh well i dont eat fish but would of loved to get some fillets for the family at Christmas. Love to catch and realese though so it felt good.

Setup weight for tailor
Submitted by just_fishin on Sun, 2013-12-15 12:18Hey guys, I was just wondering what an ideal total weight of my setup should be for throwing lures at tailor... is 550grams on a 9ft rod too heavy? Rod weighs 130grams and reel weighs 420grams.
Will my arms start getting tired after a day? I can either get a lighter reel which brings the total weight to 410, or go with the reel that I orginally wanted and have it at 550grams.
Not too sure if an extra 140grams will make a whole world a difference so looking for opinions and what are the weights of your setups for throwing lures off the rocks and the beach

macks
Submitted by tangles on Sat, 2013-12-14 14:46with the ocean looking like oil early this morning a quck run up to the sandpatch in the tinny for a troll. couple hookups just past echos n dropped then hooked a big mack on the tail n lost him at the boat. once just north of the sandpatch it was a hookup every 30-40m! ended up turning around and trolling back to town and had a double hookup about a mile north of the mouth. Good fun when your by yourself! left the heavier gear on tight drag and had some fun on the light bream gear. Got the 2 macks to take home and back within a cpl of hours! water clarity is pretty good up north. No specles in the water and nice and clean! hopefully we wont miss out like we did last season on the mackerel run!
sorry no pics no camera and in a 3.75 tinny no room to muck around with a photo anyway. hopefully 2mw will be just as good on 6 pound gear! shes gona be 41 here tmw so be a good morning to have some fun with them on the light stuff!
theres been quite a few croakers caught at wagoe last couple of days, tailor are in plague proportions and are now busting up the mullet in the river! still a few blueys around. been scooping them at night in the shallows which is fun! gota get em before the holidays start!! mullas are still around at frussies but you have to dodge the sharks with all the dredging going on, so for those who enjoy catching sharks youll have fun at frussies.

Submitted by Blake Fuller on Sat, 2013-12-14 09:35good day all, went out today to find some squid. stayed up all night and was at the boat ramp at 2:30-3am launched the boat to realize that there was a leak through the bung!!! some handy chewing gum did the trick the patch up the hole, get out and finally start squiding around 3:45-4 caught a little squirt in just a couple cast. thinking its going to be a good day. and hour later landed another, after that 3:30-4 hours go past with no action besides a snorkeler getting an ear full for not having a dive flag up. not been a good day

Barometer / Thermometer / Tide clock
Submitted by pale ale on Sat, 2013-12-14 09:07My missus was thinking about getting a barometer / thermometer for me.
She did some research and found electric ones which also have a tide clock. Has anyone got advice about these tide clocks. Are they accurate? How can it tell where you are in relation to the tides.
We all know the barometric pressure affects the fish, so I'm looking forward to studying this a bit more.
Before and after restoring my 30 foot Cold Molded Gamefisherman
Submitted by SailFishQuepos on Sat, 2013-12-14 01:28
We spent 7 days a week, 14 hours a day, getting her back to new. Had to bring it all the way down to the hull and do a couple of patches, put in new hull and motor supports (the wood beams the motor sits on) and then built a small cabin up front with the bathroom and a ton of rod holders! It was a blast, except for being so tired, it was definitely worth it, I wish I had taken more pictures, here are some before and after and a couple of during pictures.
Here's what we started out with, classic "Palm Beach" Costa Rica Gamefisherman with a but ugly cabin:
Then this is what we did with the cabin and floor and pretty much everything except the hull. We were going to burn it, but I think there was soo much oil and diesel in the wood, it might have exploded and taken out the ship yard here... so we took it to the dump :)
Here is what the front part of the boat looked like when we took out the floor and the hull. We left a little part of the cabin up front as you can see in the picture that became the visor. In the picture it shows pine boards going across, but before we put those in, we coated them with West Epoxy and surf board cloth so they are waterproof and we don't have to redo any of that. Here is the empty hull:
We then had to patch the hull. There was a rotten spot under where the motor support beam was. The rotten spot was only about 6 inches across, but since the boat has three layers of wood, we opened the first layer up really big, then made like a pyramid, opening the second layer up only half the size and then the hole that went side to side was only about 9 inches big. I called West and they sent me a book on how to do it, this little patch took over a week to redo. We did it with the same weightless Laurel Wood the boat was made with, and each layer we lined up the grains with the existing grains of the surrounding wood layer. Here is the patch when we finish, before putting the board on the outside:
We then had some good rot on the transom and back rail so we rebuilt those as well:

Then I got too tired to take any more pictures, but here is the floor and cabin after we put it back together a bit!

Here is a picture of the visor we turned the front part of the cabin into. That was a lot of work as we built it a couple of times until I got it looking right. We also built those two fiberglass boxes you see on the tower that is next to the boat so I can put all the gauges in one side and the GPS / Sounder / Radio in the other. I hate those ugly black cummins things, so I made the gauge holder out of glass and hole sawed it. I replaced the original gauges with the sea cruz gauges that have built in alarms, but I had to buy two temp gauges because the first one they send me didn't work, so I don't know if I would recommend them.
The bottom we treated with the Interconnect sealing epoxy and Micron 66 from Interlux. I really like the look of the blue color, and hopefully after 3 coats of their best paint, I won't see any buildup for the next year or so.
2 and a half months later, we got her down in the water. This is from about 5 minutes after I got it in the water. The boat on the right is the panga we built a couple of months ago. We didn't get to start it until a couple days later because I was waiting on a new Racor.
Here's the first run last weeek:
First trip out was yesterday, she beat my other two boats releasing 6 nice sailfish and a couple of 30 pound Mahi. It was a fun build, I need to take some more pictures...
Here's a before and after just to see the difference, I really thought it came out better than I expected, what do you guys think?

Peaceful Bay
Submitted by bergerac on Fri, 2013-12-13 22:14Heading down to Peaceful Bay in Jan with the missus. Not much chance of getting her out on the boat but is it worth taking my yak down and fishing the bay/inlet or is there not much benefit over landbased? Can I expect much else apart from KG's, skippy. herring and bream without getting offshore?
