Rod for Saltiga SA40
Submitted by Stevef on Tue, 2013-12-31 15:39Hi all,
the wife has generously brought me a Saltiga SA40 for Chrissy. I have spooled the reel with 80lb braid and will be using the reel for heavy bottom bashing and also some gummy shark fishing here in Victoria
I am seeking some advice on a rod, price range max ~$300
I have looked at the Momster Mesh and Terez so far. I am drawn to the MM but would like just a little more length in the rod, the Terez is a little too long for my liking.
Any input will be appreciated
Cheers Steve

Help out a brother in a dry spell
Submitted by Josh on Tue, 2013-12-31 11:17So the weather is loking good for a thursday morning mission, and I am asking for a share in the wisdom to break my run of wrasse.
The tally is running at 2 trips out into the sound, 3 whiting, 1000 buttterys, about the same in wrasse and a northwester blowie.
Any info would be helpful, I'm either thinking of going down to cockburn or out from hillarys.
I also just got a HDS5 which hopefully will assist in finding some good ground. Boat is a 5.2cc
Have been using bait squid/prawns/mulies as well berley with cubed mulies

Whats under the boat!!!!!
Submitted by tailor marc on Tue, 2013-12-31 08:10Well went out off ledge with a couple mates just before Chrissy after the ban to make up for the big snapper i had to put back that i got during the ban. Got a nice dhuie for Chrissy bbq, Nothing big but nice at 6-7 kg...
As we were fishing we seen what we thought was a big shark under the boat and it looks big on the sounter so i grabbed my go pro and stuck it over the edge of the boat and filmed under the water not knowing what i was capturing. We were in 25 meters of water with no real structure around showing on the shownder, pretty flat bottom.
Here is the video..... Im thinking Sambo's or Amberjack. Watch the video in HD. Pause and let load and open full sceen to see better....

Jigs for Exmouth
Submitted by ctan1968 on Tue, 2013-12-31 07:21Hello all,
In the planning stages for a trip up to Exy in the new year and would like to try some metal jigs in deepish water (100m). Have used a few small jigs for Perth demersals but need some heavier gear to reach bottom fast.
Traditionally we use bait but I'm sure jigs will gain plenty of interest out there. Are there any favourite jig shapes for this type of work? I assume the long slender jigs work better by less flutter and getting down quicker.
I have done some jigging for sambos at Rotto using the knife jigs but that was dropping jigs into an aquarium - not long for a hook up. Do you just have one hook up the nose end of the jig connected to kevlar type material?
Thanks in advance
Chris

Blow Fish
Submitted by meglodon on Mon, 2013-12-30 22:36Ok who has or what has taken all the blowfish from the Mandurah estuary.
I've just got back from trying to dab a few prawns in the shallows and for the first time I have only seen two blowies.
Normally you have this big brown cloud following you around and even coming up and bitting the hairs on your legs.
The two blowies I did see tonight at first look looked as though some one had put a ring on their tail (just as you do sheep) so I netted one and found no there was no ring or fishing line or whatever the tail had just wasted away just behind the body.
The tail of the blowie was very very thin and it looked like the fish was starving and wasting away (both blowies looked the same)
My question is has anybody else noticed this deformity on the blowies, and what appears to be a massive reduction in their numbers in the estuary, not that I'm complaining about the drop in numbers mind you.
If anybody has been fishing with bait in the estuary (a near impossible task) I would be most interested to hear if you have observed a significant drop in blowie numbers.

Swan Crabs
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Mon, 2013-12-30 14:38I took the old man out early this morning for some crabbing, we headed out from pt walter at around 5:35am and got to the deep water at the coombe. We got our first five ready then dropped and as we pulled up on a mooring to ready the other five pots, boats came from everywhere. We dropped our other five in and went around to check the pots. First pot nothing, second pot had us the first good male by 6:17am. From then on it was kinda slow, we got 10 in total by 11 with some tailor trolling in between. There was not much happening on the sounder, but we hit a spot that has produced in the past and I was just telling my old man how quiet it was on the sounder, when a single blob appeared and I said heres the first show and he was on. Short fight later and he boated a 34cm tailor that bit me on the right index finger after hooking and trying to measure.
All in all a good morning with the old man, home by 12 and crabs cooked and cooling now for dinner tonight!
Anyone else having any luck? We were using half mullet/tailor baits in 17-20mts at the coombe. I havent been able to get down to a decent tackle store to get tuna heads yet, maybe for the next trip.

Albany - Boat Fishing - Advice and Tips
Submitted by trueblue_10 on Sun, 2013-12-29 05:03I posted a few weeks back looking for tips about Albany but looks like everyone out boating. So thought I would try again.
I am going to Albany for a couple of weeks (January/Feb). I have a Ally 6.1 Quintrex. Will be staying at Emu Point. Want to do some fishing with son and hopefully find some reasonable ground. Never fished this area before so any general tips - dangers to watch for - what to expect etc will be really appreciated.
Plus would appreciate anyone who may be kind enough to give a few general tips which direction to head and depth to be in to get to reasonable deepsea fishing ground etc. Will be launching from Emu Point mostly unless I get other suggestions. PM me if you would rather keep it off the forum.
Also appreciate any advice for in close fishing like squid, KGs and crabs etc.

Monster Mesh
Submitted by Fishing_Mecca on Sat, 2013-12-28 18:54Has anyone used the monster mesh rods? Are they any good for jigging and bottom bouncing as I've heard that they can break easily when fighting big fish and aren't worth the $200.

Light lure rod
Submitted by commocean on Sat, 2013-12-28 15:20Looking for a rod to cast light lures a long distance at whiting, bream etc. specs- about 7', 1-3kg or less, roughly 1-7 gram cast weight. Preferably less than $200 but may go $250 if its worth it. Is there one rod that can be used for soft plastics, crank baits and stick baits? If not hard body rod prefered over soft plastic. Some options i found were daiwa air edge, samaki zing extreme, pfleuger patriatch xtr but dont know what lure type theyre suited to. Any rod suggestions, reviews, advice on lure types for certain rods and your experience with sp and hb rods is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Custom MHX 7ft bream/flats rod.....
Submitted by barneyboy on Sat, 2013-12-28 10:45Here is the latest build.
The blank is a MHX S842. 7 foot 1 piece 2 to 4 kg. They come with a limited lifetime warranty.
I used a mahogony wood reel seat that I think looks quite sexy and Fuji 'K' guides. 1 double leg stripper guide and the rest single legs with a silicon carbide tip.
The pattern is what I call a 'shooting star'. Bound with 'A' grade, Metallic blue, Metallic silver, NCP royal blue and black.
Just need to muck around with the cork a bit now to get it a bit better and get a better camera for close up pics.
Happy fishing...

4 seasons in one day
Submitted by sea-kem on Sat, 2013-12-28 06:32A quick report! Well after humming and harring whether to put the boat in yesterday we finally decided to drop her in to check the pots, but with a couple of back up rods just in casey ;) So out for a pot check with wind blowing it's guts out we hit the first pot to find it had been smashed by a seal. Second and third pot yayy 10 crays. So happy chappies, while doing these it was pissing with rain and wind but I could see it was just a small front. When it passed the wind dropped right off so off we went for a fish. First drop on my baby outfit a Dhuie, two mins later another. Out a little wider with the deckie getting a double header undersize Dhuie and the nice Pinky. The were some pretty envoius guys back at the ramp who had thrown in the towel deciding not to head out at all, ha ha who dares wins!

Busso Jetty Report
Submitted by salmonwanter on Fri, 2013-12-27 22:53Went out tonight and caught five over50cm tailor on sun set. Just using weighted mules on gangs.
About seven other tailor were landed at the same time.
It seemed that the school were chasing a smaller school of flying fish.
Not many squid or trumps around at the moment but there is still much herring to be shared around.
I also saw a striped tuna get landed last night which was good for a change up.
