Demersal jiggin help
Submitted by danno on Wed, 2010-10-20 21:20Hey all.
Just asking if anyone could help me with a few questions that ive been trying to find out about jigging for demerals so if someone can help me it would be much appreciated.
1. Which jigs are good for jigging in shallow water no more then 40m?
2. What lb leader do you guys use?
3. Which technique do you guys use? just roughly?
4. When you find a lump where should i be jigging? the side, on top, up wind, down wind???
Thats all for now i think.
Cheers

Need a lift to Sambo country
Submitted by Albee Mangles on Wed, 2010-10-20 15:01Guys, looking for a lift to the Sambo grounds for one kayak and kayaker. Will put in for fuel, as well as help with standard deckie duties.
Prefer water to 100m or close to that.
Need to be able to carry a 13' kayak onboard, i'll require dropping off at the grounds, then you can shoot off and do your thing, and come back for me, or i can hover, whatever. I have VHF, UHF, Epirb, PFD1 etc. Most of you know me, im not a noob who's likely to get in trouble. Can keep in touch with radio, plus i have GPS etc for positioning info. Will need to be a reasonable calm day.
Weekends are preferred, but weekdays can be arranged with notice. If you can take 2 kayakers, let me know as well and i'll find another (if i can...).
Please PM me

Halco lures
Submitted by luke t on Wed, 2010-10-20 10:31Does anyone know if Halco / RMG lures are still made in Australia?
Reason for asking, is on a recent trip to Saudi Arabia ive found them in tackle shops cheaper than i can buy them in perth.. Now im all for supporting my local tackle store when it comes to buying good quality rods reels etc and drawing on their local knowledge. but how can these Australian Lures be that much cheaper on the other side of the world..
Just for the record i didnt bring a suitcase full home. didnt actually buy any... But last night i recieved an email from a colleague who is working in Oman, telling me that he found a tackle store selling Rapala Magnums (the Big ones) and X-rap sxr-10's INSANELY CHEAP.. Might be getting him to bring me a few hundred $$$ worth home for me i reckon...

Shimano Stella SW Reels
Submitted by Alan James on Tue, 2010-10-19 19:52I received this comment from a potential seller that Shimano released the Stella SW series in 2008 and that all Stella reels on the market today are the 2008 model.
Is this correct?

Trolling setup
Submitted by aalfred on Tue, 2010-10-19 19:15Hey Guys,
I just started with trolling, and i was wondering about the setup and I was hoping I could get some tips from you.
The last time we went out we just following setup: One big teaser at the starboard side bout 7meter behind the boat. Then 2 teasers on the inner side with small skirts behind them bout 15meters behind the boat. And on the outriggers we had one lure ( Halco laser pro shallow about 2meter deep) and a big Richter skirt both about 30meters behind the boat.
All up we just hooked one tuna, but we saw them next to the boat so ther where more they just didnt wanne bite. We did changed a few skirts and lures (colors and sizes as well as deep going to shallow running) around but nothing really seems to work. So I was wondering if we have a wrong setup or if we did some other mistakes. The hook up was on the inner teaser with small skirt.
If anyone could give me some advise that would be great!
Thanks

Metro tuna help
Submitted by beau on Tue, 2010-10-19 16:11Hey guys, i know alot of you are doing realy well catching tuna in the metro area and was wondering if i anyone could offer any advice as i want to target them on the jetski! Most importantly is how far from shore are people catching them, as fishing from the ski im only allowed up to 5NM out. What lures are working the best and what speeds are you trolling at? I bought a Richter Tornado skirt the other day but dont have a clue if thats something you would use to target tuna. Any other info would be great.
Cheers, Beau

my oldest boy in the sound today 18/10/10
Submitted by fisho-ron on Mon, 2010-10-18 20:18my oldest boy,
fresh from getting his skippers ticket has taken my dingy and my 4wd for the first time down to launch of the beach at cockburn sound, just to have a bit of fun with the rays, turned out to be an eventful day for him and his mate..
gave him my hand held gps with a couple of spots marked in close so the could get some skippy/hearing for me for bait.
when launching the fisheries have come over asking about a dolphin with some net wrapped around his tail, they found the dolphin and whatched while being rescued.
then they have seen a baby whale jumping around a bit out in the channel, no sign of mum though.
later on, while out having some fun with a couple of rays they got a bycatch of a 51cm pinky(pussy holding it with a rag) and then the shovel nose.
i must of trained him right as everything was released to swim away healthy.
even the 4wd/dingy come back ok.
very proud of the the oldest, starting to get out there by himself and do his own thing, looks like the dingy is going to get used a bit more from now on.
but he has got f/all chance of taking the big boat out by himself.....for a long long long time.
cheers ron

Will Whaling Ever Happen Again?
Submitted by Seaquest on Sun, 2010-10-17 21:38Went out for a squid in Geo Bay today and saw whale after whale. Never seen so many. Been talking to the guys at the lighthouse who record the numbers of whales that round the cape and they say they have recorded record numbers this year. Got me thinking how long will it be until whaling starts again or is this a thing of the past? I would hate to see this but if the whale population keeps growing it will be hard to stop the Japs?

Eating Amberjack/Sambos
Submitted by Goodz on Sun, 2010-10-17 20:25Just wondering what others opinions are of eating Ambers and Sambos. Just finished dinner of beer battered amber and it was great! Have kept the odd smaller amber and sambo lately and found the ambers haven't had any of the red worms in the flesh like the sambos have. The flesh is nice and firm and cooks up well. It's definately no Dhuie but I recon well worth keeping one if theres nothing else in the esky. Prefer the ambers over the sambos though.
Also kept a 10kgish sambo down in Albany the other week and it didn't have any worms and tasted great pan fried with bread crums. Do you think the colder water fish would have less worms/parasites?

bottom bashing rod.
Submitted by danno on Sun, 2010-10-17 20:02hey all.
ok so im getting a TLD15 for bottom bashing.
what would be a good Fiberglass rod to match it up with? i'll be running 30lb braid through it but i would like a lighter rod so that it REALLY bends. i was thinking a ugly stick 8-12kg rod and push it hard but the rod is a spining rod... any thing like that would be great.
any help would be great cheers.

Barges Sunday - Roll Call!
Submitted by Goodz on Sun, 2010-10-17 18:22So who all was out there?!
I was out with Cammos, And I we saw JohnF, Chrisp, shecky, Till, seaswirl (nice boat), Just1Morecast, fisho-ron, Luke R, was that you Honsu?, and I'm sure there were more people who I just don't recognise.
Plenty of Amberjack out there that's for sure! Was a nice day once the wind died down out there. We have a few issues with the sounder not working and not actually having the marks for the barges so just followed the crowd and managed plenty of fish between us!
Great day out thanks cammos!

weekends fishing with the boys
Submitted by fisho-ron on Sun, 2010-10-17 18:09we headed over to rotto pretty late sat arvo and got there just before dark,
but after anchoring up with my mate and i got my glass full of the good oil, i got the rods out for the boys.
my young bloke and his cousin(holding the kg) had a ball getting into some hearing, skippy,kg,and a couple of silver bream.
the pb kg for the cousin at 49cm and maybe a few to many jimmys for me.........is 1 bottle to much? no so i give the second one a tickle
got up early to hit the barges with the other 50 boats, but to my suprise....i was not feeling the best and it was a bit choppy out there my stomach said,
so we done some trolling at west end for a while until i was feeling better!!!
the boys picked up a couple of tuna, a first for both of them, my sons one give him a good fight for 10mins,
but the other one was like he wanted to get in the boat.
then we headed out to the barges....need traffic lights out there fore sure......sambo gettin caught every where you looked,
i didnt fish to much as the guts was still not feeling the best, but the boys got onto a couple and also 3 big skippy.
(camera died when i was trying to get pics of the whales)
released no probs, but kept the skippy for bait when the ban comes off.
it was great to see so many f/w members out there getting into them.
it wasnt till about 1pm when i had another couple of jimmys and then i was felling good again.
a good night/day out for the boys, and i am blaming my mate who decided to come at the last minute,
for getting into the jimmy
cheers ron

Assist hook help
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Sun, 2010-10-17 15:34I got some YGK Dyneema yesterday to give tying my own hooks a shot but the dude in Oceanside couldn't tell me what weight #40 was, actually sorry he did estimate it being around 160kg. I took a punt that given it was the only weight they had in stock there it would be heavy enough for tying for sambo jigging.
Just had a look on the the JDM website and they've put it at 130kg (I think it's the same gear), can anyone confirm a) the weighting; and b) whether that would be suitable or whether to go heavier?
