Question for the kayakers
Submitted by Versus on Wed, 2013-03-13 21:24got an old kayak sitting around that doesnt get much use, wondering what the easiest/cheapest option is for putting a rod holder on it? Even if its just a piece of pvc pipe attached somehow, just want to paddle around the river a bit.
Also if anyone has some kayak roof-rack fittings lying around that they want to sell let me know.
cheers

Tough Choices
Submitted by Ash06 on Wed, 2013-03-13 19:49Hi Guys
2 days ago i asked for you opinion regarding quobba fishing over summer and i got 2 pretty conclusive view points. 1 was to go i may-august, the other was november. Ive got a chalet on hold for end of july that i booked today, i was just wondering if people had gone this late into the 'ballooning' season. the trip is for for my mate as a bucks trip and i'd like to give him the best odd's of catching some decent fish as unfortunately our last trip (sept 2012) was a complete flop. Im just looking at people opinions of our booking compared to possibly changing it to november. I'd love to hear from anyone that has been during any of these times.
Cheers
Ash

ELECTRONICS GURUS - HELP REQUIRED (PLEASE)
Submitted by Septimus on Wed, 2013-03-13 18:46Hello All,
Has anyone successfully connected (via NMEA0183) a FCV-1150 to any other name brand plotter (specifically in my case a NSE-12) such that it's possible to "mark" a waypoint on the FCV-1150 and that waypoint to be automatically transferred to the plotter?
I've managed to get GPS data (from NSE-12) to FCV-1150, so that now when I mark a point on the FCV-1150, the co-ordinates are stored and displayed on the FCV-1150 BUT the waypoint does NOT appear on the NSE-12.
Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Jurien Swell
Submitted by MattG on Wed, 2013-03-13 15:01Hi All,
Planning to head to Jurien on saturday to troll for mackies. The swell height is forecast to be a bit over 2m, and as im not overly familiar with the area (fished there a few times) thought I'd ask if there is any areas i should steer clear of with this type of swell?
Thanks in advance

Navionics charts
Submitted by Justo82 on Wed, 2013-03-13 14:55Ok, I've got navionics platinum on my tub. When I bought it, it came with a genuine navionics SD card reader.
I've plugged this into my PC and nothing's happened. You can't look at the charts or anything. I then read, that trying to access your charts on your PC can erase your card and its not covered by warranty (thankfully this didn't happen to me!).
am I doing something wrong? Should I be able to look at my charts on my laptop? I just don't want to have to sit in the boat in the driveway every time I feel like casting an eye over possible new ground.
cheers for your help in advance.

Diving at the Abrolhos
Submitted by Fozz on Wed, 2013-03-13 11:21This season is the 1st time you're allowed to dive for crays at the Abrolhos Island and the charter boat we're going on doesn't allow tanks onboard. So we'll be freediving for them this time round, so just after a bit of a heads up from anyones that been there recently or remembers from prior seasons on what sort of depth we're likely to find them (hopefully not too deep). We'll be taking some pots also for insurance, heading out this Sunday.
Cheers Fozz

Drug aware Margaret river surfing pro
Submitted by mucsavage on Wed, 2013-03-13 09:37Hows it going lads/ladies. :)
Delighted to be back in WA after an extended holiday away.
Just a quick few question's, relating to the Title of the post. A group of mates and I are heading down to the event for the end of the event, 22nd March - 24th.
There is about 2 of us out of a group of 15 people, that would be into the fishing lifestyle and was wondering is there anywhere near by that's close to the town of Margaret river itself that is landbased, that is available for some target fishing for the likes of Tailor, Herring, or anything decent.
I wont have much time to go hunting around for spots and time is precious as the Mrs and the gang won't be hanging around. Any help or info on the general area or stretch of beach or rock wall's (preferably) would be great. If you don't wish to disclose info over this publically, please send a PM..
All info greatly appreciated.
PS: Rods we have are: 10ft multi purpose Uglystick, 13 foot surf rod. (not much room in the car for more gear due to the ladies and their baggage.)
Cheers in advance.

Nor West Blowies
Submitted by Ericl on Wed, 2013-03-13 09:14Headed out from Ocean Reef last Saturday to try for Whiting. Normally fish 32 to 34 metres and dont have any problem catching. This trip however kept getting bitten off by Nor West Blowies. Got one to the surface to prove what they were and had a number of mangled and bitten off hooks as well
Any suggestions as to other areas / depths to try for a feed of whiting till these mongrels move away !

Buying a new reel for exmouth, thoughts?
Submitted by flexn on Mon, 2013-03-11 22:03Hey all,
Looking for some advice on a new reel for exmouth in april.
I already have a daiwa ld20 2 speed with 50lb for most of my fishing, a spin reel with 30lb for popping, but want another reel for trolling/bottom bouncing and maybe even jigging. Was thinking of a overhead and not interested in a star drag. I will probably be spooling it with around 80lb braid.
I was thinking a single speed saltist lever drag? not sure on what size
Price range around $300 give or take. Or even buy from the states or second hand.
Any suggestions would be good.
Thanks

North Cottesloe Tailor
Submitted by Aaron_Moses95 on Mon, 2013-03-11 20:16Went down to a beach in cottesloe, about 1k north of the groyne. Fairly calm day , but still decent chop on the water. Was throwing a 35g metal , before i noticed some large tailor cruising about 2m in front of me. Most would have been around the 40cm mark, but i saw a couple that would have been around 70-80cm. They were completely un interested in bait and lures. Was so annoying to see them so close to me but swim past my lure time after time. Managed to jig up a decent flathead on a metal, other than that got nothin.
Other than the fact that it was fairly calm, why do u guys reckon that they didnt hit anything?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

denmark
Submitted by thebmac on Mon, 2013-03-11 20:03hey guys, heading down to denmark next weekend and am in research mode. i have found a few spots worthy of a try. the main thing i am struggling with is finding a boat ramp.
the map i have looked at has said there is one at ocean beach. is that a beach launch? or is it a sealed ramp? i have never done a beach launch and not really that confident. is the ramp in the estuary sealed? at least one of the days i will be heading to albany and having a try out there but if i dont have to drive that far i wont.
and lastly any reports on the salmon or is the water temp still too high??
any help or advice would be appreciated.

Fishing rod holders
Submitted by Dale on Mon, 2013-03-11 17:39Heard a story on local ABC radio today where the police in the mid west have been cracking down on vehicles with non approved rod racks. They were giving yellow stickers for them and saying the law was changed against them a year ago. First time I've heard about that. Don't quite know what type of rod racks they are alluding to either.
cheers

Flathead spikes
Submitted by Super peg on Mon, 2013-03-11 17:09I have heard ( cannot remember where) that if one becomes spiked from the spikes on the gills of a flathead that the pain will go away if you rub the area spiked on the belly slime of the flathead, would act a remedy to relieve pain, but think it was mentioned that it needs to be the same fish,
has anyone heard this? Or better yet put it into practice? Or is it a load to be spat and not swallowed

Jigging help
Submitted by Fisher Kid on Mon, 2013-03-11 17:04Am noob at jigging and am seeking some help. I got a 200g. 150 and 120 g jigs, all with plain assists no skirts, i use a little rovex altus lw20 combo(not the best of them but im 14, and i dont have a boat, only use it when im out on a mates boat), i do the jigging --> lift drop lift drop etc, winding as fast as i can during that. And i get no hits, nothing, havent really tried that much but im wondering what im doing worng, o and i usuually use them in between 30-50m of water, for demersals and sambos.
What should i be doing?, Do i need skirted assists? and should i jig alll the way up from 50m or just a bit up then drop it back down? Should i rig with the assists at the top or the bottom? (One of my jigs if rigged so the assists at the bottom will sway side to side when going down)
Any help greatly appreciated.
