Howdy All
Submitted by Felix on Thu, 2013-01-10 14:24Hello Everyone,
Just a quick one to say hello and to introduce myself.
Names Felix, I live round Rockingam.
Me and a mate are out in the sound or off 5 fathom couple of times a week in his beat up old 5m tinnie. Been doing this for a few months now (since he got his boat) and have had a lot of success with Herring & KG's. Not much big stuff yet though.
Looks like you guys have a pretty healthy community going on here!
Not gunna beg for spots or such (at least not yet). But we would like to hook up with some guys experienced in the area around the sound/rocko/mandurah for a beer and a chat. So let me know if you are keen. Email is .
We are gunna try 5 fathom again tomorrow. Anyone else going out?
Laters.

Alvey beach set up
Submitted by Mattb123 on Thu, 2013-01-10 09:27Hi folks, long time reader 1st time caller. Waffle post with question to end:)
Over christmas I managed to destroy a perfectly good Penn SSM 650 during routine maintenance (misread a diagram and tried to undo something not intended to undo...) so need a new surf reel. I have a basic set up 10ft rod and the Penn that has stood me ok but now I need a new reel, and with being a hipster the current fashion, I've a yearning to get myself an alvey set up. I was just going to get a new Penn but I missed the christmas sale at Campbell's. I was going to have it repaired but would have cost more than new!
I'm pretty much a tailor session at dawn or sunset kind of fisho - swanbourne drain to Floreat Drain.
Anyway I'm amazed at just how many blinking Alvey reels there are! Research suggests something in the 650 range? And a 12 foot rod (I gather alveys need a rod with a lower reel point). Rather fish lighter than heavier, and drop down to a whitebait size rig 50% of the time.
I'm thinking second hand, and not sure if the older model reels are the same?
So to the question... if there was such a thing as a great perth beach alrounder alvey (older models and new) what would it be. And what to look for in a rod.
As for recent fishing trips... a couple of 35cm choppers off City Beach Groyne, and a single slightly larger at Floreat Drain. both just after sunset, and judging from the rest of the beach the bite is lasting 15-20 minutes max! Lucky I love standing in the dark with the surf at my feet!
Sometimes I fish lighter on a 7ft Shimano rod with stradic 2500... with limited success:) GOing to start hitting the river for the bream and flatties but never used solft plastics or lures in river so no real clue there. I'm an old-skool prawn on a 1/0 hook kinda guy:)
If the alvey thing does not work out next year I'll go a Penn SpinfisherV if they ever get here, or whatever other basic and sturdy beach real you guys recommend at the time. Not enough $$$ for more expensive gear I'm afraid!
Lastly, if anyone has an old Penn SSM 650 I can salvage for parts p.m. me:)

FS... GW Jaws
Submitted by chris raff on Wed, 2013-01-09 15:23" Warning Link contains Graphic image " that some may find disturbing ....
Side effects include uncontrollable urge to sing " Kumbaya " , sucking of thumb and crying in foetal position ...most common is the effect of verbal diarrhea...apart from that could be a good investment...2nd link is apparently Tiger shark jaws asking a fair bit for those ....however could be a fairly lucrative market

I live just out of Karratha and was wondering if there were any types, sizes, colours, brands that would be recommended for out wide. Ive had some luck with soft plastics out wide but would love to try something new. Cheers.

Hds 5
Submitted by donlovesfishing on Tue, 2013-01-08 15:30hi all just struggling to get my hds 5 sounder to perform to its maximum potential. I have tried playing around with it on the water but still no go. On wat setting is best for colourline, sensitivity, cluter, noise reduction, etc. On lambys furuno it clearly shows fish under ledges etc. Can i set my unit to have a split screen and bottom lock so as to c the last 5mtrs of the bottom? Like 5mtrs of the bottom and normal depth the split screen? Wen i tried to set it it seems to show the top 5meters. Probably the furuno 585 is a lot better i assume. Also is it betterr to have ur fish I'd off, to see fish arcs? Any info woild b greatly appreciated.. cheers Don

Quobba in March
Submitted by EKUL on Tue, 2013-01-08 15:12Hi All,
Have booked Quobba for March 18-23rd.
Have just purchased a new Tyrnos 30 and a gladiator LBG 2.4m 15-24kg rod.
Will be geared up with plenty of steel trace and balloons. (lots of lures too)
Any tips you can throw this way would be nice!
Wind in march? where to spin? bottom bouncing off the stones?
Cheers

Tagging Report - Dhufish recaptures
Submitted by Andy Mac on Tue, 2013-01-08 11:27Managed to recapture another two of my tagged fish yesterday. Both had shown signs of barotrauma on initial capture and whilst this was minimised with the regular decompression stop I do on all my released fish, it was still noticeable. However two more recaptures to add to the others over the years and I am convinced, as you all should be by now, that careful slow retirieves and a deco stop on all released fish, matched with a release weight assisted return to the depths should lead to a healthy fishery in years to come.
For the record both recaptures had bearly moved from their home turf, but at their size I would be surprised if they would travel very far.
Tag 77659 initial capture 30/9/12 43cm recaptured 7/1/13 at 45.5cm
Tag 77657 initial capture 30/9/12 37cm recaptured 7/1/13 at 37.5cm
A varied growth rate as you would perhaps expect in a population. By the way my gut has grown a similar amount in that 3 month period (hahaha)
Here are a few pics for those interested
