Anyone got one or heard of anyone using the new hummingbird side imaging sounders , was thinking of installing one of these on the fish finger aswell as my lowrance color sounder and color chartplotter to give me a better idea whats going on down there and  mainly for offshore work , can get a smaller screen for $1000 and is gps compatible but the bigger unit is $1999 and has same functions , all comments would be welcomed , cheers feral

Neap Tides

How do I manage my GPS co-ordinates?

I have been using the Navman tracker 5500 for a couple of years and have a whole swag of co ordinates.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to manage naming the spots they find?  I find that my waypoints are all just numbers (I haven't named them) but I find it too hard to name them out there being too time consuming and missing out on valuable fishing time and I am unsure which new spot is which when back on land.  Also, I am limited to naming the spots by having only half a dozen letters to name each spot.  As a result I now have a swag of meaningless coordinates that I don't know why I put in.  How do others deal with this?

rope free

Rope same stuff the telstra boys use its the blue and yellow mate gave me 4 coils each one is 100 mt long they are new coils free if you want some pm

gutted

after a good morning session today,a few good crays a nice ray and heaps of small stuff,i was putting my gear away ready to head in and the worst thing happened.
i put my rod (t curve tounament with twin power 2500 reel) into the rod holder, whilst putting away the mulie rig i heard a splash behind me,when i turned around the t curve had fallen out of the rod holder and was quickly saying goodbye  ,i coldnt reach it in time so on went the mask & fins.
i was in 5 meters of water just by the rock wall.
jumped in and got the shock of my life, the current there is sooooooooooo strong and with the water being a bit cold and me being about as fit as a burger eating pack a day smoker should expect to be it was hard work just to keep up with the flow.
after a fruitless 20 minutes (seemed like hours) i gave up  self preservation kicked in and no rod is worth drowning for.
expensive lessons learned today
1 dont put rods with short butts on the rod holders
2 eat less burgers
3 smoke less (mrs says i have to give up before the babys born anyway)

cheers
dave

predicting weather from desert

Damn sometimes I really hate trying predict the weather from where I work in the desert.

Wanted to head out and chase some cray's today but the net sites showed today to be windy so I didn't put a thred on here for any divers to come along for some dives aswell. Now it was flat this morning and the ramps are full of trailers.

Was gunna put a thread in for some boats to hea to the Gemini on tues or wed, but now it looks like they may be blowing where as yesturday sites said dropping down to 4-5 knot easterly's. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I only get six days and surely I need four on the water. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Tag Pole - help

Was going to try to make a tag pole up for gamex. Has anyone made one and if so can you give me some tips on how to make one.

Rod Repairs - Jim Head Top Guy

Yes this is a plug, wasn't sure where to put it, but I feel that it is worth sharing the info with you folks.

Sent two rods to Jim to replace guides.  He did a top job for me at a great price too!

Worth going to his place to see his collection of rods and antique reels.  Have not seen so many antique wooden reels in one place before.

Broome landbased

Does anyone know what the landbased fishing at Broome is like. My stepson has just landed a job up there for 12 months, so I am already planning a winter visit. I know the jetty is pretty famous. Are there any other spots around that area for a chap without a boat.
Thanks  Colin Hay

New road to Jurien

Still a way off, but sounds interesting, Regards Colin Hay

Premier Alan Carpenter has today announced an additional $110million to ensure Indian Ocean Drive will be completed within the promised timetable.

The funding relates to Stage Two of Indian Ocean Drive - the 65km Lancelin- Cervantes sealed coastal road - and means construction can now commence next year, with completion scheduled for 2011.

Construction of Stage One - a $20million 10km sealed section from Lancelin to Ocean Farms Estate - is on course to be opened early next year.

The significant funding boost brings the State Government’s commitment to the major infrastructure project to $145million.

“This new funding enables us to well and truly meet our 2005 promise to complete the Lancelin-Cervantes road by 2011,” the Premier said.

“Indian Ocean Drive links communities along the coast from Perth’s northern suburbs to Dongara and will become a major Western Australian tourism, holiday and recreational route.

“It provides access to excellent surfing and windsurfing, recreational fishing, wildflowers and other natural attractions including the world famous pinnacles in Nambung National Park.

“Completing this link will accelerate investment and economic development along the coast and will provide drivers with an alternative to the Brand Highway, which is a major freight transport route.”

Planning and Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan said the Stage Two project would be directly managed by Main Roads, ensuring maximum use of local labour and plant.

“This project presents an excellent opportunity for Main Roads to rebuild its in-house capacity to manage and supervise road construction,” Ms MacTiernan said.

Mr Carpenter said WA’s continued economic strength had enabled the funds to be allocated ahead of next year’s Budget.

“This project is part of our commitment to sharing the benefits of WA’s remarkable resources boom across the community and it will help create new jobs and businesses opportunities for the future,” he said.

Overhead reel information

Hi guys and girls.
I am gradually building up my tackle collection after years of neglect. Thanks to the great info fishwrecked members have provided, I have pulled together a collection of spinning reels to cover most situations.
Now I am wondering if I could get some advice on what would be the best overhead for casting from the shore, and also handle the very occassional offshore opportunity. My old Shimano was a great servant, but after 25 years it just can't get the baits out there anymore.
I am looking for an overhead that is tough enough to handle the bigger fish, and can cast live baits, poppers, metal lures etc right out there.
I have been looking at the new Shimano catalogue and there are some really nice reels there.
But happy to hear recommendations on all makes and models

All information will be greatly received. Have a pretty reasonable budget.

Many Thanks Colin Hay

Lucky Bay

Hi Guys,
I'm after some info on fishing Lucky Bay.Has anyone been there, can you camp on the beach? I've seen Lucky Bay on DVD and am keen to travel up there and stay a night or two. Cheers Kev

Jiggy

Have been doing a bit of searching around and I know Samsons aren't overly fussy buggers, taking spanners & the likes.
But if you were to have ONLY two jigs in your kit, & price was not an issue, which off the shelf ones would they be and what colour would you choose??

There are so many on the racks, I'm getting buyers confusion.

Cheers
Jody

Ok guys,

The possibility is that over the xmas new years break, I may be able to head down south for a few days, however, my wife and her family usually go down to a lake to camp every year near arthur river (wagin sorta proximity)... just wondering what estuaries and fisheries would be closest to this place to go fishing in... for bream or trout or whatever is around to flick lures at...

Anyone know much about the esturine systems down there and where abouts they are located, lakes or rivers, mainly landbased...
