Do you think they get this big in WA?

Bream areas

What places are producing bream at this time of year? Might flick around some lures but let me know if bait is preferred in the area. Going to test out my new 2500 reel on bream for the first time! Tips for the area would be helpful

new ground

spent the day looking for some new ground north of Mindarie yesterday

lots of small baldies & the horrid north west blowie & 3 keepers

But it was a good day to be out on the water

Any advice appreciated,

Flathead feeding times

I know what tides you will catch flathead on but what times? Middle of the day, dusk, dawn or at night. Some advice would be great.

More crankin Bream

Got 3 bream this morning, the biggest only 26cm. Missed to monsters (40+) as they swiped at the cranka crab, awesome visual! Saw a huge amount of 40+ xl bream today, frustrating when they won't look at your offering but a good sign for the future.

show us ya bream

Gday, me fat mate beno said it was impossible to get a bream thats legal size in the swan, so thort id show him how its done!!!

Putting the GoPro to good use

A couple of weeks back during an unsuccessful troll I came across this in the 20's:

After pulling the lures in I went back to the spot and tried jigging....nothing. I then sent down some large bites, lots of pickers but no hook-ups. Down sized the hooks and tried again, after two consecutive double headers of king wrasse I was very much discouraged so decided to move on.

Like others on this forum it left me wandering what it was I was actually looking at on the sounder. I decided I had to find out so the next day I set about building a frame to send my GoPro to the depths to see what was actually down there. Tested my frame in the pool and thought it would do the job so next time I took the boat out I took my frame and GoPro with me, went back to the spot and did a couple of drifts with the GoPro and frame on a heavy hand line. When I got home I viewed the GoPro footage on my laptop and this is what I saw:

Wow! I had been looking for a KG spot for so long and finally I found one, courtesy of the GoPro.

Other residents that showed up on the GoPro footage:

I'm not 100% sure what that last fish is, I'm thinking either a nice pinky or a sweet lip of some sort. Also saw a number of gold spot sweet lip and foxies.

Next time out on the water I went back on a KG hunt, again I started with a double header of king wrasse but then came the KGs and this was the final result:

Gold! Also caught some nice Skippy, all released, and undersize pinkys.

While the frame did a reasonable job in the pool there were some definite problems on the water. The whole thing spun quite a bit and I could never tell whether the frame was on the seabed or off it - bit of a problem when you have a $500 camera attached to it! Also the GoPro 3+ housing is only rated to 40m. I've since made some mods to the frame and bought the GoPro 3 housing rated to 60m, can't wait to try it out on some of my lumps in the 40's. Looks like the laptop will now become standard "fishing" equipment on the boat!

Couple of things I found very interesting. It was obvious that all the fish are naturally very curious, they all came up to the frame to check it out. Makes me wander how much truth there is in fish being spooked by swivels, sinkers and the like. Also the king wrasse appear essentially colour less, some people swear by red colour on jigs, hooks etc when the red all but disappears at depth.

Still working on the GoPro footage, will post a You Tube link once I've got it uploaded.

I'm having a lot of trouble deciding high gear vs low gear, someone please help!!! I'm loosing sleep.

Hey guys I need some advice on a reel purchase. Someone with knowledge about gear ratios, retrieves and cm per handle crank is needed right here!!
......................................................................

Hey guys I recently sold a saltiga 5000 low speed model. I had intentions for it to spin for bluefin off the rocks (once a year) and also to use it as a livebaiting reel off sydney wharves and flick big lures for reefies on up north and such but mind you these are once a year expeditions.... I sold it because I was told here it was way to slow to try even spin for my upcoming trip spinning for bluefin and thought about getting a 4500 (low speed) , however the 5000 had a ratio of 4.1 I believe and the 4500 has a ratio of 4.8 - 1. Which in my books isn't too slow and on the medium level between torque and speed. Where as the 5000 which I was told was "ALL TORQUE and power"

However On another forum someone has recently told me there isn't much difference in CM per crank of handle on both models? So what is the whole "4.8 to 1" really mean ? As im a bit confused now.

I think personally the 4500 low speed would be a better option for me as these trips I do needing the higher speed is honestly once a year thing and not to mention , when longtail are around it's not like they like a super fast retrieve anyway when they are cruising past the rock ledge.

As for spool capacity goes.. the 4500/5000 spools are interchangeable too. I plan to buy a 5000 spool for it to run 50lb braid for when im using it up north with big plastics and jigging.

In short guys I really wanted a reel that had a "medium" gear ratio. And this is what I'm really after , to do both applications.

1. Spinning once a year for 3 days. (I've heard longtail don't like a super fast retrieve?) Im heading next month!!! but don't want to loose a hookup because im too slow with my stickbaits that I've purchased for them ???
2. Livebaiting for kings off Sydney wharves/ Beach Jewies and sharks.  (alot of pylons near our wharves , gotta get them bloody quick!!!)
3. Big Plastics for reefies in weipa
4. Slow rolling big hardbodies off breakwalls for jewfish. and sending out a squid unweighted
5. trolling around weipa with big hardbodies.
6. Heading to harvey bay ( I have a branzino 3000 for the boat , but for landbased off the pier I have a 10 foot stick and would like to target some queenies off their and try my luck? maybe spinning ??? )

And 4.8 seems on a great level for my applications (I think????)... However been told the 5000 with the 4.1 ratio has a couple of Centremetres difference in per crank of handle??? how is this possible??
There MUST be a difference, because if there was just a couple of centremetres per crank difference why would daiwa still sell the 4500? The 5000 is the same body with a bigger spool? I don't see the point!!! Daiwa wouldn't do such a thing and waste the money!?

And not to mention They also have a 4500 RCS spool which is very expensive an a blingy upgrade for the 4500, but however you can get a 5000 RCS spool which can fit the 4500 and have more capacity? Is this just a size thing as it is weight difference or probly balances better on a lighter rod with the 4500 rcs spool?

I probly have should of researched more before selling it!!! Now I'm very confused with what to do and what option to take?

Someone just make up my mind for me.. My obsessive compulsive disorder is going out of CONTROL!! ahhh!!!
I have 4 weeks left till my 3 day trip chasing longtails off the rocks with my selection of stickbaits ready to rock and roll!!!

Black Watch 34

 Hey guys,,

Picked up the boat on Saturday and brought it back from Mandurah to Mindarie. The trip took 3hrs  @ 22 knots in almost glass off conditions. We took her out yesterday for a big day of marlin fishing in the trench. The wind came in early and the swell was up to 2.5m by noon. The girl lived up to all my expectations,  she handled the seas very well regardless of which direction we ran. This Black Watch really does live up to her reputation as a serious sea boat. Not a great fishing day, one small yft and a strike on one of the big lures. At 4pm we pulled in the lures and headed for Mindarie. The trip took 1.5hrs @ 22 knots in a 2.5m following sea the ride was so comfortable that I almost fell asleep with the autopilot taking us home. If anyone wants to go marlin fishing in the next month or 2 send me a pm. I have taken the boat out of survey to due some recreational fishing while I get use to her. I will be running some trips at cost while getting use to the boat. A great opportunity to get in on some cheap marlin fishing.

Busso jetty

Hey guys. Just wondering what has been caught off the busso jetty lately. I'm taking the boys away next weekend and all they want to do is fish which is fine by me.

Exmouth in May

Hi all,

As a school teacher I usually have a short trip up to Exmouth with my son during the April school holidays.  We find the seas are great and the weather OK for camping at that time - apart from the place full of tourists like us.

This year I have to burn up some long service so will be going up in mid May (12th).  Having never visited in May before, can anyone give me the heads up on general boating conditions during that time?

Thanks in advance

Chris

expensive day out for my mate

trip to South West Bank , predicted glass off conditions , on the way out quite large swells , made things tough in my little boat , coming home was better , but it was worse for my mate he caught 2 black arse one went 34cm and the second one went just a touch over 30 cm they were the only decent fish caught for the day on the way back to point perron my mates rod bounces out of the rod holder and hits the deck result bail arm holder on his stradic fj 8000 snaps clean of . when we get back to pp fisheries are waiting , polite young woman asks if she can have a look at or catch told her no worries she plucks the smaller black arse out of the ice slurry are you sure this is 30 cms my mate says yes was just over when measured when first caught . Fisheries girl says I need to measure it with our ruler , turns out it is 3mm under , my mate tried to explain the fact of cold water and shrinkage ( as every man knows cold water equals shrinkage of parts of anatomy )she couldn't understand what he meant and ended up with a S200 fine, I thought it was going to me at first with the fine but my mate said although it was my boat , he had skippered it for the day, I have told him I will go halves in the fine, he asked how about the reel repairs it was your boat , he is my best mate but I told him don't push it haha

Sea sweep, who would have thought

Nice day on the water today. Out fished by my 12 year old boy who caught a small dhuie and horse of a sea sweep which was on par with the Fishwrecked record of 52 cm, gave him a good fight actually. Was hesitant in keeping it but had read that they weren't too bad on the chew and thought I'd give it a crack, cooked it up tonight (battered) and was very surprised at how good it actually was, nice flakey meet with only a slight fishy taste, all the family though it was pretty good.

I have spent 90% of my live living working, fishing and diving in the north west , my best mate and me have relocated to the rocky area unfortunately we haven't been catching any thing down here (our wifes have started to abuse us ) willing to swap secret NW sweet spots for Metro sweet spots

Today's diving visibility

Hi guys just curious if any one else was out diving today, we went out from mindarie to try some new spots and found it was very surgey and visibility was terrible. Dived a few spots from 20m to some more sheltered 5m spots and was the same everywhere. I've been away for quite a while so not sure what the weather has been like leading up to today but didn't think it had been to bad. Manage a couple of crays so can't complain to much. Hoping rotto will be better tomorrow

New Rod Ideas? 10ft Spinning off Rocks

Hi All

Heading back to Quobba again later this year, thinking of getting new heavy rod around 10ft for spinning hopefully to be used stopping massive mackie runs like some of the posts on here.

I would like 9'6' FerariStik as my mate has one and have seen it put through a lot including at Quobba. He got his at tackle shop closing down sale but cant find anywhere to buy them? I guess they stopped making them a couple years ago?

If anyone knows where to find one or more (everyone wants one for the trip) please let me know or alternatively any rod that is similar in style of length n strength, casting distance & casting weight.

Heres a couple of memories from Quobba.

Cheers

Heading out to Hilary's tomorrow

Boat Show

Worth going?

10 bux a head and have to park miles away and cath a bus in.

Poor buggers launching will have not much luck with parking methinks.
