Boat Show
Submitted by SpotHound on Sat, 2014-03-01 16:00Worth going?
10 bux a head and have to park miles away and cath a bus in.
Poor buggers launching will have not much luck with parking methinks.

Rec Fishing Licence renewal may not have been sent out.
Submitted by Sandgroper-WA on Sat, 2014-03-01 11:44Just has a fisheries check at the ramp this morning, turns out my licence only has 2 days left on it, and I haven't received a renewal notice. The comment from the Fisheries officer was that "a few people haven't received their renewal notices" So it might be worth having a check just to make sure its valid.

Weird mackie flesh - anyone seen this before?
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Sat, 2014-03-01 08:01Picked up a couple of macks yesterday out with Whitey and when I was filleting one last night I found this weird section of flesh where it seemed to be breaking down to the point of it also eating through the bones. Once you got around it the flesh was all tip top and there was nothing wrong with it.
I wouldn't say the flesh was decomposing or rotten, it just looked like it was literally breaking down.
Anyone seen this before or know what it is? I assume the rest of the flesh will be fine to eat (we had a bit last night anyway and am still here to tell the tale).
The first pic below shows where it had just eaten through the bone, the second and third pics give an idea of the breakdown of the flesh. That white stuff in pic three isn't bone, just the sinew or whatever it is that you normally get in there.

Crab hook or freehand crabs while snorkelling?
Submitted by Mars2atk on Fri, 2014-02-28 21:18Hi guys,
Just thought I'd pick your brains on this one. I'm heading down to Mandurah for a scoop sesh and was going to bring along the mask and snorkel in case the crabs were out a bit deeper. I'm pretty short, even for a girl, so once the water hits upper thighs, it becomes a bit of a hassle to wrangle the scoop net. So I thought floating along with a mask & snorkel might be handy, but I'm not sure how to catch the buggers without the scoop.
I'm not too sure on how to fashion a crab hook myself (or if I even have the tools for that), and if I freehand it, would a standard dive glove from somewhere like BCF be enough to give me enough protection from those claws?
I wouldn't be terribly deep, deep for me would be waist deep for the average height guy. I'd also just prefer to get away from the crowds scavenging through the super shallow areas.
Also, is it better to scoop at night or early morning? Me and the girls have been going around 6am and we've managed to get a feed, but it's always nicer to scoop without the crouwds so we were wondering if there were any benefits to having a go at night instead. I'm terrified of stepping on a stingray hiding in the weeds, but I don't actually know if that's a legit concern!
Sorry about all the questions, but me and the girls have decided we're a bit crap with fishing and are trying different things out. Would love to know how/where to catch prawns and get occy, but we're a little limited without a boat.

Finders keepers?
Submitted by Notorious on Fri, 2014-02-28 21:15Real slow day freedive spearfishing today out wide. On the way home decide to stop in on a trusty spot on the FFB. I notice an algae covered rope floating off the top of the reef. I swim over and follow it down into the reef and notice a plastic cray pot wedged in place. I breath up and make my way down and pull it out and notice a bunch of feelers inside. I swum it over to the boat and pull out 4 legal crays including 2 jumbo's!

A Message From Barry Wareham (From Our Parent Company)
I still hold many South African records and I know that many South African records have been caught on Assassin rods and on our GT Icecream plugs & Iron Candy lures as well. The most recent of which is the South African record for a Snoek or Queen Mackerel, which I have broken twice on Iron Candy and currently, hold the senior South African record. My son, Blayne, has the junior South African record, also caught on an Iron Candy. The only records that currently cover shore angling are those of SASAA (South African Shore Angling Association) who do not separate lure caught fish from bait caught fish and only have one open class.
Some of the fish that we are catching on these light rods with braid, small reels and lures are really amazing and there really should be a separate category for this style or type of fishing.
I wrote a Guide to Fishing on Skis and Kayaks a number of years ago and Barry Rebeck, a South African angler and a well-known businessman (ex Managing Director of Beacon Sweets), provided a short introduction to me on the back cover.
“Barry Wareham is one of South Africa’s most accomplished anglers who I have had the pleasure of knowing and fishing with over many years. Over those years I have come to recognize a mind constantly alert and questioning and one that puts together a series of noticed events, natural phenomena and often well camouflaged marine observations to come up with a new way and a better way of achieving success in angling. Whilst his South African colours were earned in the extremely competitive world of Rock and Surf (Shore) Angling, he is equally at home enticing a Kingfish or a Trout on a fly, outwitting a Bass on a surface popper, tempting a Tiger fish, or unraveling nature’s riddles to excel as an angler whether on lake, river, estuary or sea.”
About Barry Wareham
Barry Wareham has been involved in competitive angling for many years, at national and international level. He has captained both provincial and national teams and is a past president of the South African Shore Anglers Association and the KwaZulu Natal Shore Anglers Union. He is a founding member of SAFTAD (South Africa Fishing Tackle Agents and Distributors) and still serves on that committee.
Barry has fished extensively in many different countries including in an unofficial South African team that attended Australian inter-state tournaments in Geraldton, Western Australia and also on the East Coast at Rainbow Beach near Fraser Island. He is also part of the Off The Chart fishing adventure television series team and supplies the fishing tackle and talents for the show.
Barry and his team in South Africa will be working very closely with Shaun, Gary and Matt at Assassin Tackle Australia Pty Ltd in ensuring they benefit from over 40 years of his and his team’s experience.
One of the other partners, Derrick Akal started the fishing tackle division in the family owned company Akals in 1972, one of the largest tackle wholesalers in South Africa. He started the fishing tackle trade shows in South Africa around 1980, which has grown to become a national event with all wholesalers participating.
Brands
The bigger brands include Assassin fishing rods, CID Iron Candy spoons and CID GT Ice Cream surface plugs. The Assassin rods were the first products into Australia and small quantities used to be stocked in Perth and Qld. At that stage it was only surf rods and there were three in the range. Since then Basil Manning Fishing Equipment has been selling rods and equipment through its online store to customers in Australia.
All of these sales and all future growth will be handled by Assassin Tackle Australia Pty Ltd, which is now the sole distributor of these and all other brands belonging to Basil Manning Fishing.

Daiwa Electric Super Deep Outfits
We have back instock all the rods and reels you need to go target all the super deep species. The weather is looking awesome for it!
Daiwa Megatwin 1000's are definitley our go to reel when targetting the ooglies out deep. Their light yet strong contruction makes them perfect for dropping baits or jigs down into the depths. A stronger drag system and the Automatic 2 speed gear box makes them built to last.
Daiwa Megatwin 1000 paired with the Daiwa Tanacom Bull interline (mini bent butt) is great for putting the outfit in the rod holder and letting the outfit do the work.
These are for the limited time only $

We also stock the Daiwa Longer model (full bent butt) Tanacom Bull " Interline "
We also stock the Daiwa Longer model (full bent butt) Tanacom Bull
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________
If you want an outfit that can be whacked in the rod holder to do the hard yards but also comfortable to hold onto if you wanna go one on one with a big bass then the Daiwa Megatwin 1000 paired with the Ozflex Braid Master electric light is the way to do it. With a softer action compared to other bent butt rods its alot more forgiving on the lower back during extended fights.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Jigging Master Manual Super Deep Outfit
With alot of our customers now getting good at locating the Super deep species their is alot more call for manual outfits. The ducks nuts for manually dropping into the deep would definitley be a Jiging Master outfit.
The JM Powerspell PE 10 paired with the JM Fallings 52B MH PE5-10 is mint. Stacks of capacity and able to apply 30kg + drag pressure to stop big fish.
We can do this outfit for $

Winds of change
Submitted by unhurry on Thu, 2014-02-27 12:56Hey fishos,
Planning on headign out saturday for soem bottom bouncing geographe bay on Saturday, forecast suggests a NE -> NW wind pattern.
I have heard from some fishos that these winds kill the bite, but not sure that is true? Why would it do so anyway?
I thought it may be good to take a poll on this idea ( that a NW wind is bad for fishing) and see what the general opinion is.
Just answer YES ( if you agree that the Northerly winds are bad for fishing) or NO; feel free to add some discussion and comments to the vote.
Cheers.
