Setup weight for tailor

Hey guys, I was just wondering what an ideal total weight of my setup should be for throwing lures at tailor... is 550grams on a 9ft rod too heavy? Rod weighs 130grams and reel weighs 420grams.

Will my arms start getting tired after a day? I can either get a lighter reel which brings the total weight to 410, or go with the reel that I orginally wanted and have it at 550grams.

Not too sure if an extra 140grams will make a whole world a difference so looking for opinions and what are the weights of your setups for throwing lures off the rocks and the beach

Crabbing season

Just wondering is crabbing season open in Cockburn tomorrow?

Custom Mackerel Rod

Done this up for a mate. I have on more coat to go but it's coming up nicely. Let's hope he christens it with a nice Spanish!

macks

with the ocean looking like oil early this morning a quck run up to the sandpatch in the tinny for a troll. couple hookups just past echos n dropped then hooked a big mack on the tail n lost him at the boat. once just north of the sandpatch it was a hookup every 30-40m! ended up turning around and trolling back to town and had a double hookup about a mile north of the mouth. Good fun when your by yourself! left the heavier gear on tight drag and had some fun on the light bream gear. Got the 2 macks to take home and back within a cpl of hours! water clarity is pretty good up north. No specles in the water and nice and clean! hopefully we wont miss out like we did last season on the mackerel run!

sorry no pics no camera and in a 3.75 tinny no room to muck around with a photo anyway. hopefully 2mw will be just as good on 6 pound gear! shes gona be 41 here tmw so be a good morning to have some fun with them on the light stuff!

theres been quite a few croakers caught at wagoe last couple of days, tailor are in plague proportions and are now busting up the mullet in the river! still a few blueys around. been scooping them at night in the shallows which is fun! gota get em before the holidays start!! mullas are still around at frussies but you have to dodge the sharks with all the dredging going on, so for those who enjoy catching sharks youll have fun at frussies.

tailor anyone?

hi just wondering if anyone has been having any luck with tailor latley river or ocean could be a good arvo out with the kids if we could get into a few

could be better

good day all, went out today to find some squid. stayed up all night and was at the boat ramp at 2:30-3am launched the boat to realize that there was a leak through the bung!!! some handy chewing gum did the trick the patch up the hole, get out and finally start squiding around 3:45-4 caught a little squirt in just a couple cast. thinking its going to be a good day. and hour later landed another, after that 3:30-4 hours go past with no action besides a snorkeler getting an ear full for not having a dive flag up. not been a good day

Barometer / Thermometer / Tide clock

My missus was thinking about getting a barometer / thermometer for me.

She did some research and found electric ones which also have a tide clock.  Has anyone got advice about these tide clocks.  Are they accurate?  How can it tell where you are in relation to the tides.

We all know the barometric pressure affects the fish, so I'm looking forward to studying this a bit more.

Before and after restoring my 30 foot Cold Molded Gamefisherman

We spent 7 days a week, 14 hours a day, getting her back to new. Had to bring it all the way down to the hull and do a couple of patches, put in new hull and motor supports (the wood beams the motor sits on) and then built a small cabin up front with the bathroom and a ton of rod holders! It was a blast, except for being so tired, it was definitely worth it, I wish I had taken more pictures, here are some before and after and a couple of during pictures.

Here's what we started out with, classic "Palm Beach" Costa Rica Gamefisherman with a but ugly cabin:

Then this is what we did with the cabin and floor and pretty much everything except the hull. We were going to burn it, but I think there was soo much oil and diesel in the wood, it might have exploded and taken out the ship yard here... so we took it to the dump :)

Here is what the front part of the boat looked like when we took out the floor and the hull. We left a little part of the cabin up front as you can see in the picture that became the visor. In the picture it shows pine boards going across, but before we put those in, we coated them with West Epoxy and surf board cloth so they are waterproof and we don't have to redo any of that. Here is the empty hull:

We then had to patch the hull. There was a rotten spot under where the motor support beam was. The rotten spot was only about 6 inches across, but since the boat has three layers of wood, we opened the first layer up really big, then made like a pyramid, opening the second layer up only half the size and then the hole that went side to side was only about 9 inches big. I called West and they sent me a book on how to do it, this little patch took over a week to redo. We did it with the same weightless Laurel Wood the boat was made with, and each layer we lined up the grains with the existing grains of the surrounding wood layer. Here is the patch when we finish, before putting the board on the outside:

We then had some good rot on the transom and back rail so we rebuilt those as well:

Then I got too tired to take any more pictures, but here is the floor and cabin after we put it back together a bit!

Here is a picture of the visor we turned the front part of the cabin into. That was a lot of work as we built it a couple of times until I got it looking right. We also built those two fiberglass boxes you see on the tower that is next to the boat so I can put all the gauges in one side and the GPS / Sounder / Radio in the other. I hate those ugly black cummins things, so I made the gauge holder out of glass and hole sawed it. I replaced the original gauges with the sea cruz gauges that have built in alarms, but I had to buy two temp gauges because the first one they send me didn't work, so I don't know if I would recommend them.

The bottom we treated with the Interconnect sealing epoxy and Micron 66 from Interlux. I really like the look of the blue color, and hopefully after 3 coats of their best paint, I won't see any buildup for the next year or so.

2 and a half months later, we got her down in the water. This is from about 5 minutes after I got it in the water. The boat on the right is the panga we built a couple of months ago. We didn't get to start it until a couple days later because I was waiting on a new Racor.

Here's the first run last weeek:

First trip out was yesterday, she beat my other two boats releasing 6 nice sailfish and a couple of 30 pound Mahi. It was a fun build, I need to take some more pictures...

Here's a before and after just to see the difference, I really thought it came out better than I expected, what do you guys think?

Coral Bay L/B Fishing

Taking the wife and kids to Coral Bay next week. Besides Maud's landing for tigers, can anyone suggest any land based fishing spots for 6 and 7 year olds close to town and would lures or bait be best? I'm taking the 4x4 so access to spots shouldn't be a problem.  The thought of leaving the family on land and taking a charter has crossed my mind but I may not make it out of the town alive. Cheers in advance for your thoughts.

Two Rocks Marina

Is Two Rocks Marina open yet to launch from? Last time I made the trek it was closed and due to re-open early - mid November. A mate said that it was still closed is this true?

Fish biting in Albany

Snag it? Tag it!

Recfishwest is launching a new safety initiative for recreational boat-based fishers targeting demersal fish species such as pink snapper and dhufish.  The Snag it? Tag it! campaign will raise awareness around the dangers of snagging on commercial rock lobster pot gear to deckhands operating the equipment.

As we head into summer weather and with the demersal fishing closure being lifted on December 16, recreational fishers will be heading out to their favourite fishing spots all along the West Australian coast to try their luck.

To help recreational and commercial fishers operate safely this summer, Recfishwest will introduce the new Snag it? Tag it! safety initiative.

It will allow recreational fishers who accidently snag a rock lobster pot, to attach a “danger tag” which alerts commercial fishers to the fact that there may be sinkers and hooks attached to the pot or rope.

This will mean that deckhands on commercial fishing vessels face less risk of injury when pulling in pots at high speed. Recreational fishers are being asked to attach the tags to the top of the rock lobster pot rope, above the float, so that they are clearly visible.

Recfishwest Chief Executive Officer Dr Andrew Rowland said the danger tags were an important safety initiative.

“We want to keep all water users safe and these danger tags will provide an early warning system for commercial rock lobster fishers pulling in their pots,” he said.

“It also fosters co-operation between recreational and commercial fishers.”

The Western Rock Lobster Council has assisted in this initiative and will be educating commercial fishers to be on the look-out for the danger tags, so that they can operate winches at a safe speed.

Western Rock Lobster Council Chairman Basil Lenzo said: “It’s very important that recreational fishers work together with commercial fishers so that the safety of everyone on the water is ensured.

“We are very happy to be involved with Recfishwest in this new initiative.”

The danger tags will be available at metropolitan tackle stores.  Recfishwest will also hand them out at boat ramps in the first week of the demersal closure lifting.

Having someone else dive for Crays?

I haven't gotten pots organised yet which is a shame seeing as this weekend looks fantastic

Although if someone has Jarrah or Pine second hand pots at a reasonable price i'd be interested in buying today/tonight

My question is if I take someone else out on my boat and they dive for the crays (To split between us) is that a grey area if we both take 8 (Both having licences)

Just not ready to freedive myself until I arrange a sharkshield

Soft plastics rod - G.Loomis GL2 or Shimano Mexican Raider 2 soft plastics

 Hi all,

I am a fan of soft plastics and would want to get a new rod for soft plastics?

how would you rate Raider to GL2?

majority would be Snapper fishing from 5 to 10 kg mark.

How does a shimano Rarenium or Stradic CI fair?

cray question

Was looking in the fisheries booklet and says ammount of crays allowed to be kept at a residence is 18 but is that 18 per licence or overall as have 3 people in the household that have cray licences
