Boat on the Rocks at Garden Island
Submitted by Willy on Mon, 2013-12-09 20:56I heard today (09-12-13) that they were attempting to retrieve a 6.8 meter vessel from the rocks on the western side of Garden island. I have no more details, anyone heard anything?

jumping flathead!
Submitted by TheBigMoyFish on Mon, 2013-12-09 19:12went for a flick today to try and get my first bream on plastics, no bream but ended up landing 4 flatties the biggest being 42,.The next hit I got was from a thumper flattie that hit at my feet and took off, got him almost in when he turned and jumped, and threw the lure! SHATTERED! didn't know they did that, is it a common thing?

Lost crab pots - what do you do?
Submitted by crasny1 on Mon, 2013-12-09 08:50Went out for a crab yesterday in Peel. Set our 10 and caught heaps off U/S again. All getting closer but only ended up with one keeper. I forgot the ice so it was just kept in the live tank, and was returned to grow some more.
But we came across 3 lonely floats sitting in the middle off nowhere. It was obvious these pots have been "lost" as they were not linked to a string, and there were no boats around. We kept watching but at the end decided to remove them because all they were was a hazard.
Now when we hauled home we had 13 nets onboard, albeit the 3 rescued pots had no baitholders left (but one had a tangled crab in it which we freed).
I was not sure whether we did the right or wrong thing from fisheries point off view. GoPro-ed the discussion about lifting them just incase fisheries came along as we believed it was the correct thing to do to remove the hazards.
2 off the nets are in a crapy state, the other is a brand spanking new large pot.
Question: what is the correct thing to do, did we do wrong. And would we be breaking the law if fisheries came along?
Cheers

The ban ends 15th
Submitted by Walfootrot on Mon, 2013-12-09 08:14Its great that the ban ends on the 15th, and we can start fishing again on the 16th, just a shame the 16th is a bloody Monday.
Think the ban should be extended to the 20th
.
Or better would be reduce it to the 13th

Swan river landbased
Submitted by commocean on Mon, 2013-12-09 06:51Seen some good reports of fish in the swan in the newspapers but have never fished it before and wanted to know where abouts the fish (tailor, flathead, etc, not really sure what to expect) are in the river and how to target them. I'll be fishing landbased.

Sounder advice
Submitted by Westy74 on Mon, 2013-12-09 06:27Would appreciate any tips on how best to set up a sounder to find the best spots to drop cray pots (sand near ledge) I have a navman 4350 and am finding that the bottom is just a mass of mixed colours and it doesn't really change that much even if I know I am over sand or over reef. All of the manuals show nice solid blocks of colour with the thicker ones being reef but this is not what I am seeing. I am using a white colour palette, very fast scrolling, a 30m range and I am using the zoom function. Maybe it's doing what it should be doing but I just can't understand it Many thanks

GPS module not responding help help some one please
Submitted by meglodon on Sun, 2013-12-08 19:46Hi can any body please offer some advise on a problem I have.
Problem is, I have a Lowrance LCX 15 CI, half way home the warning message "GPS module is not responding" comes up on the screen.
The following actions have been carried out, all to no avail.
Power checked to unit 12.5 volts.
All connections unscrewed and checked for dirt, water or corrosion, all found to be ok. Nil dirt etc found.
Unit turned of and on a number of times, no effect.
All cables checked for cuts crimps nicks damage etc, nil found.
Unit stopped working after it had been working for approx. 90 min.
All other functions on head unit working as designed, sounder map, not navigation page message "GPS module not responding" stops this page from displaying navigation info.
All suggestions much appreciated, unit is approx. 11 years old but is in vg condition and well protected from environment.
Thanks in advance for help

Weekender at Lucy's !
Submitted by hookedacookey on Sun, 2013-12-08 19:05Canned work on Friday and headed up to s bend beer bait and swags fully loaded. Arrived around 3 setup and fishing by 4, slow start with a few dart and herring followed up with a few tailor around the 40 cm mark on dusk. A few soapies later in the night and a few froffies and away to bed.
Woke up Saturday morning a bit later than planned and deano scored a nice fat tailor at 60cm and a few more around 50cm. Spent Saturday at port denison for a few beers a and a steak followed by a fish off the rockwall. Landed a load of snook a nice shovel nose and spotted a nice tiger cruising along the rockwall great weekend with the boys!

I'll name the elephant in the room - Cranka Crab
Submitted by meglodon on Sat, 2013-12-07 20:51Here we go again on a subject that has been raised a few times in the past and all ways there have been a number of predictions made about when they will hit the shelfs.
What am I talking about, why Cranka Crabs of course.
That great mythical lure that has had more false starts than you can poke a stick at.
For a lure that had all the bands playing and the girls dancing it has been shown to be one hell of a great marketing bullshit fest IMO. This lure won a competition at a fishing show over a year ago and the company has not put a single Cranka Crab on a tackle shop shelf yet !
One can be glad that it is a private company because if it was a public listed affair I'm sure the ACCC would be having a strong look at it.
What a bloody disgraceful state of affairs this is/has been.
Would anyone like to post the latest excuse for this company not having Cranka Crabs on the shelf of tackle shops.

Barramundi Lure
Submitted by Terry on Sat, 2013-12-07 19:23Will be traveling to north Queensland next year and will be trying for a Barramundi or two.
I am interested in what lures people are using or have used with success.
The fishing will be from creek banks and or river banks.
Fishing gear will be of the lighter stuff. So would be thinking of lures around the 100-130mm length.
Any tips or info greatly appreciated.

Shark Bay Help Please
Submitted by Riles on Sat, 2013-12-07 14:38G'day
The missus has given me permission to head up to Shark Bay next week for a fishing trip. I know this might not be the best time of year to head there, but I've got a leave pass so I'm taking it. I was wondering if someone could let us know whats biting up there at this time of year. We were mainly looking at trolling for macs etc and jigging plastics and jigs for demersals. We were planning on fishing the eastern side of Dirk for the first few days then possibly heading up to turtle bay for an overnighter and fishing the reefs to the north towrds the end of the week. Also if anyone would like to PM me any spots that would be awesome.
Cheers

shellfish and compost
Submitted by Griffo84 on Sat, 2013-12-07 08:09good morning ladies and gents,
Just wondering if anyone knows if prawn shell and crab shell is any good for the compost bin? I have heard it's no good - even toxic for your compost. I managed to catch a few blueys in Mandurah yesterday but dont want to throw all the shells in the compost just yet. - BTW it looks like its going to be a good season for the crabs. There are so so many crabs 2-3 mm under sized so around chrissy jobs on!!
Cheers

bent st boat ramp
Submitted by petermac on Fri, 2013-12-06 20:51good and bad news about the ramp , apparently the dredging wont be finished until January (why does that not surprise me) the good news is if your careful you can head straight out from the ramp now as against doing the port turn and heading a k before you can head out

Trigg beach blue holes
Submitted by Mad fisherboy on Fri, 2013-12-06 16:20Hey guys me and a couple friends are planning to go fishing Saturday morning and we may go to trigg.
last time we went we walked out to the blue hole and got 5 solid tarwhine with 3-4 released but there were absolutely no waves.
According to the weather do you think we would be able to walk out to the blue hole? We are 15 and are very keen fishos.
If it we r not able to walk out we may go to north beach jetty any tips or reports for that area would be nice thnx.
