Blue Green Algae potential motor neurones disease
Submitted by saltatrix on Thu, 2013-09-26 15:01Eating anything caught in the river?
Australian scientists have helped discover what could be one of the only known causes of motor neurone disease.
The researchers were involved in discovering how a toxin in blue-green algae can contaminate food and cause problems in the central nervous system.
The cause of more than 90 per cent of motor neurone disease cases remains unknown.
Researchers are hoping the link found between motor neurone disease and blue-green algae could help treat the condition.

Onslow Fishing
Submitted by woftam123 on Thu, 2013-09-26 11:56G'day guys,
Heading to Onslow with my old man to catch up with one of his old work mates. Unfortunately will be the second week of
school holidays but any time your offered free accomodation who's going to knock it back?!! Don't have access to a boat
so was interested in shore based alternatives? Have fished from Kalbarri to Exmouth but never at Onslow. Any suggestions
and advice would be appreciated. Also, if anyone has a spare spot on board during this time am happy to help out with fuel
costs etc. just to get out there!! Thanks
Dwellingup

R.I.P - Ivan Erceg
Submitted by Brucesta on Thu, 2013-09-26 07:44I just read this morning that it was Ivan Erceg who was tragically killed while competing in the Australasian Safari yesterday. I was only reading in a fishing mag the other day about him and Whitey of Jurien Bay winning the World Gamefishing Champs after winning the Perth GFC tornament earlier this year. I don't know the bloke personally but i'm sure some of you southerners will. R.I.P Ivan and condolences to the family and friends of Ivan.

Temple Reef Stealth 78HH or Daiwa Saltiga S-Extreme 80TN
Submitted by clay83 on Thu, 2013-09-26 05:20Looking at getting a popping rod to cast medium size stickbaits and poppers to GT's up to around the 20kg mark. I have a trip coming up to the Sir Edward Pellew Islands. I want to match this rod to a Daiwa Catalina 5000. The two I thought might be ok are the Temple Reef Stealth 78HH and the Daiwa Saltiga S-Extreme 80TN. Another one I looked at is the Shimano Ocea Offshore Stickbait 802. Has anyone had any experience with these rods and can give me some guidance. Would I be better off spending double the money and getting a Ripple Fisher or Carpenter? I know two separate rods for poppers and stickbaits would be ideal but only want to buy the one rod for now as I want to get a Stella 18000 later on and put a pe10 rod with it. Appreciate any suggestions.
Cheers in advance,
Clay

Game rod and reel combo - advice please
Submitted by beeroclock on Wed, 2013-09-25 11:55Gday all - Im looking at gearing up for the coming marlin/YFT season off the perth trench and will be going to Exmouth some time in the near future for the big game season. Ive never bought a big game combo so this is where Im at with research so far - either a
Tiagra 50WA LRS with 800m of 24 kg mono on a 24Kg tiagra t-curve and gimble/harness thingo
or
Tiagra 80WA with 800m of 37kg mono on a 37kg tiagra t-curve and gimble/harness thing
As a newbie should i go for the 24 or 37 kg set-up the vast majority of fishing with it will be off the perth trench.. Also Ive lost 3 discs in my lower back so i definitely need the harness/ gimball I know that, but which is better a straight butt or a short bent butt cause I thought i read somewhere the short bent butt is easier on the back, also what about the action of the rod fast, medium or slow as a broom handle which is best all advice/thoughts welcome please
Cheers Dave

Perth Landbased Fishing Club - New members
Submitted by Diesel80 on Wed, 2013-09-25 11:54The Offshore Angling Club of WA is looking for new members to join its ranks, men, women, vets and junior members alike.
OSACWA is a long established club, over 60 years old with 100's of years of collective angling experience among its current members.
If you are a land based angler, of any skill level looking to get out and fish more regularly with likeminded people feel free to take a look at our clubs website and make some enquiries.
The upcoming field day in October (5th and 6th) is a go anywhere field day, which is a perfect opportunity for persons interested in joining the club to come along and see what the club is all about, pick the brains of the more experienced anglers and of course catch some fish!
The club’s definition of go anywhere is between Bremer Bay and Carnarvon, but generally there is discussion at the Club meeting prior as to where members are likely to fish allowing members (and guests) to make arrangements to meet up with others at a location if they wish to fish with other club members. Club meetings are held on the 1st Wednesday of each month, please see the events page on the website or download the current Fish Tales magazine for details of when and where the upcoming field days are.
The club is currently offering up a 15.5ft Snyderglass surf rod (used only once!) to the first new genuine / bona fide, paid up member (accepted by the committee / president) who joins via a completed application form (available on its website), OR to an existing member whom refers a new member to the club who is subsequently accepted. (I will of course remove myself from consideration for this if the first new member is a Fishwrecked member to make sure there is no conflict of interest).
At time of posting the rod is still available, but there is only 1 and it could be won at any time! (also advertised on the facebook page) The winner of the rod will be presented with it at the first club meeting that they attend. If there are multiple new members this will add to the suspense. It is also a 1pc rod so hopefully the successful new member or referring existing member has roof racks!
Club Website: http://www.beachfishingwa.org.au
Club Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/beachfishingwa
If you have any other questions about the club, membership fees etc that are not answered by the website, please contact us via the clubs email address and we will respond as soon as possible.
Cheers,
D80

Joiner knot enquiry
Submitted by Super peg on Wed, 2013-09-25 05:50Hello fellas,
I know this has been done a lot on this site but after searching and sifting through the archives and YouTube I'm still in need of solid answers, please help of you can.
ok so I'm soon to be loading up my heavier reel (fin nor offshore ) with around 50lb braid (maybe 40lb)
I will be wanting to use heavy mono trace e.g 60,80lb maybe 100lb if I feel ambitious
I like the GT knot, now does this require a Bimini? As in can I get away with just doubling over the braid?
i also like the FG knot, I'm sure but not certain that this doesn't require a Bimini and its just line to line, no double,
also is the sebile knot any good? I've read somewhere that it's a minor variation of the FG.
which one will be better suited to the larger difference of diameters?
knots will be cast from shore with reasonable weight and be used for my spinning gear also (15lb braid to 40lb mono)
reason I'm asking is I read a lot about connecting similar diameters but there trace and braid are far from similar,
appolgies if its been asked, and thank you in advance

LBG @ 1770
Submitted by GEORGESYDAUST on Tue, 2013-09-24 15:35G’day, hopefully someone can shed some light.
In late November I’m off to Seventeen Seventy (near Gladstone, Qld) for some LBG.
My dilemma is that I want to invest in a “gun” reel.
The obvious options are; the stellas, 18000hg or 20000pg, the latter, (which from what I understand), doesn’t come in a High Gear model just the power gear. For spinning I’d assume the 18000hg would be a better option.
OR.. the Daiwas. Dogfight or Z6500. All of them seem like more than capable reels.
The question is I suppose, If you were to spend around the $800- $1000 for a used or new reel, what would your weapon of choice be? (the reel will also be used for some offshore jigging down the track)
