How many got out today
Submitted by lawndered on Sun, 2013-09-15 18:56How many of you got out there today.
Its been awhile for me we have been sick and this weekend had family commitments, next Saturday is my daughters birthday so I am looking at being in Dry Dock for awhile.
Meanwhile I will have to sit on FW and perve on all your fishing captures.

Different fisherman - different fish
Submitted by C.P on Sun, 2013-09-15 16:51Over many years of boat fishing I've noticed that individual fishermen have a tendency to catch a particular species of fish. We are fishing from the same boat, same bait & similar rigs but one guy always seems to catch baldies, another nearly always get the dhuie and one is nicknamed wrasse boy and he curses the universe because thats all he ever catches. Maybe its the distance we keep our baits off the bottom or wheather or not we give the fish some line when it nibbles. It happens too often to be coincidence. Does the same happen in your boat?

Exmouth weather
Submitted by fab on Sun, 2013-09-15 11:06Just came back from exmouth yesterday. Weather was very ordinary, the wind was relentless. Was wondering which are the best months to go up. Mate and i can only go up in august or september. Which of these 2 months are better, or were we just unlucky?
Any feedback would be awsome.
Cheers Fab

Anyone have a spot for Sound Snapper tomorrow morning/arvo?
Submitted by Tradewind on Sat, 2013-09-14 22:14Motor repairs aren't going well
Just primed the outboard to test and there's fuel leaking. Will look at it tomorrow in the light but it could be an old fuel hose
Anyone heading out tomorrow late morning or arvo to chase Snapper in the sound and have a spot?
Have Pilch/Squid and own equipment plus 100L frostbite if you need an eski for the outing and money for fuel of course

Pricks in the canals
Submitted by jighead on Sat, 2013-09-14 17:32Who do these people think they are in the canal systems of mandurah. I was having a fish shore based not standing in anyones property and casting next to a jetty out the front of a house and this guy comes out and says you cant fish there i own that. Bullshit, the water is everybodys, I never touched his jetty, he had no boat moored on it and hey says I feed those fish. Good onya mate cause you obviously don't feed them enough as they really liked my zman grub. I can't stand pricks like this. I gave him a bit and moved on. What a wanker. It's not the first time either.

Pelagic / Gamefishing - a few questions for you
Submitted by beeroclock on Thu, 2013-09-12 13:45Gday all - Im gearing up for Coral Bay and the soon to come metro pelagic season. Im a reef basher mostly but gonna give trolling more of a go this summer out at the trench for Marlin and tuna so looking for some advice. Went out end of last summer twice, got plenty of Mahi Mahi at the FADs but nothing on the big pushers we really didnt know what we were doing though
My three large overhead reels have got 80 and 100 pound braid on them and Ive put 200 pound richter wind on leaders on the braid on 24 and 37 kg rods. I thought i heard or read somewhere mono only is best for heavy gamefishing cos of the stretch - can I leave them with braid on or should I change them all to mono
Next question - My brothers carrying on that all bib lures like rapala X-raps, magnums ets should have the trebles removed and replaced with a single hook for better hook-up rates I figure if thats better they would already come with single hooks on them what do other guys do do you change them
When trolling and you get a strike is it best to gun the motor to set the hook I read just keep going at same speed so if there are tuna around you have a good chance of multiple hookups
Drag settings - how hard do you set the drag while trolling before a strike - I figure not very hard at first to avoid pulling the hook.
Cheers guys

Crayfish Pot Etiquette
Submitted by Tradewind on Thu, 2013-09-12 12:46Crayfish season is coming up and it'll be my first now I've got the boat
Would it be considered douchey to put pots between Garden Island & Carnac as it serves as a bit of a channel to get out to FFB & Beyond
Thoughts?

John Adams echo sounder course.
Submitted by Markie on Wed, 2013-09-11 15:41Iv had mi own boat for few months now and didnt exactly know how to use or get the best out of my echo sounder.
On monday i was booked in for a sounder course with John Adams a very good bloke might i add, who just recently wrote a veryy knowledgable and helpful book for beginners and even to the experienced.
Was very helpful and you will be surprised at some points mentioned about sounders so even the experienced could learn a thing or two. Iv definitely come out of this course understanding alot more ebout echo sounders and how to use them and how to get the best out of your sounder. I highly reccomend this course if you are interested in getting to know about/more on echo sounders. You also get one of his books included with the course so if u forget anything all the info is there.

Rod for an Alvey - Ozflex or other?
Submitted by Diesel80 on Wed, 2013-09-11 15:09Hi, recently I got a new Alvey reel (won it) and I am looking for a suitable rod to pair it up with.
I was speaking to a member at my club with regard to the Ozflex rods, he bought one and fitted his alvey to it (about 5 years a go I am guessing). There was excessive play in the reel seat and caused movement in the reel with it fitted. When they returned the rod to the store they demonstrated this issue on the other rods in the store before they bought another brand.
Ozflex get a good rap on this site and other fishing forums and for the price are almost a no brainer if this issue has been fixed. Does anyone know if the rods now seat and secure the alvey reels snugly?
If not Ozflex, then what are my other options? Wilson has bought snyder glas, are these still as good as they used to be?
The action the rod will see will be 100% surf fishing in any kind of weather on monthly club field days. Chasing anything from Salmon to Spanish mackeral from the beach. Big sinkers, baits and casting distance is the order of the day for this setup, I have other rods and reels for smaller species, more finesse fishing.
I think I am keen on about a 14-15ft rod, and i am happy to consider second hand options if a reliable source can be advised? Gumtree and the Quokka are not turning up many rods of late. I missed one for $50 the other week, but the rod was a bit shorter than I wanted (but would be good to get used to the alvey casting).
I will be speaking to other Alvey fishos at the club, but I have noted that their rods are years old and doubt that they would be readily available these days.
Any information greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
D80
