Big thanks to Oceanside
Submitted by wrasse magnet on Fri, 2013-08-30 17:42Big thanks to the guys at Oceanside. Bought a Eupro Twin Craft from them a couple of weeks back and on 1st use found the reel popping out of the reel seat under the relatively light load of an undersize dhu and a cuttlie. Turned out my reel was most likely at fault yet the guys gave me a refund for the Twin Craft and found me a new rod to suit my reel. Top class service! I'm a long way NOR but Oceanside are my local tackle store!

Maybe Looking for Deckies 4 Early October Montes trip
Submitted by outdoinit on Fri, 2013-08-30 13:58Hi Guys,
Looking at leaving Jurien on Sunday the 29th and could be wanting a deckie??
We are in the process of planning a trip to the Montebello's, launching from either Onslow or the Fortescue River Mouth?
Looking at heading off somewhere between the last week of September or the first week of October depending on weather (Is this a reasonable time to go)???.
This will be our first trip over there and would thoroughly appreciate any help in planning etc (Need to cross this one off the Bucket List)
Done a fair bit of research on Fishwrecked from other people who have posted their trip reports, thanks for posting.
Any extra advice would be much appreciated. Or is anyone else heading over there around these times??

Getting to Muiron Islands - Help/Advice Appreciated!
Submitted by jus on Fri, 2013-08-30 08:12Hi All (especially Exmouth peeps!)
Been planning at a 2 week trip up to Exmouth/Coral Bay in May and have hit a snag with my plans to camp on the Muiron Islands for 3days 2nights as hire boats legally have to be on a trailer overnight. The initial plan was to hire 2 x 6m boats, (5 per boat), bring/tow along 2-4 kayaks & stay for 3 days on Muiron Island paradise (weather permitting).
Revised Plan(s):
(OPTION 1) Pay a fishing/dive charter to do island transfers – preferably a larger boat that can take everyone+kayaks in one go? I’ve chatted to Josh @ onstrike and he was very helpful, but I’m aware that May is a busy season for the charters and wouldn’t want any of the guys to lose 2 days of full work to take us over
(OPTION 2) Pay someone privately with a large enough boat to do a couple of trips there and back + tow a tinny? Happy to pay a local or fishwrecked member who is keen...PM your contact details & asking price!
If any locals or otherwise can suggest another contact or another solution to the problem that would be much appreciated!!
PS: I’m fully aware of all paperwork/approvals/restrictions for staying on the Islands and have already made contact with DEC to ensure everything is legit.
Any help would be much appreciated!

bent st boat ramp
Submitted by petermac on Thu, 2013-08-29 16:12the Rockingham coastal engineer finally got back to me with what is happening to the Bent st boat ramp today, the dredging is planed to start next month with two channels to be dredged , it is planned that the dredging will take 12 weeks , I asked why it had taken so long and he said he had personally been working on the plan 3 years but in all 5 years had gone into getting it to happen , the hold up has been caused by getting all the environmental approval's (fair enough but 5 years???).Well at least it is finally going to happen , he also told me he will email me a copy of the signage that will be erected as soon as he has the final ok on that and the notice to mariner's when he does I will post it

fishing holiday ideas
Submitted by Joodles on Thu, 2013-08-29 12:47An oportunity to get away by myself and just fish could possibly develop around the end of March next year. What I want to do is find an ideal location where I can walk with my tackle bag and cast artificial's all day into preferably fish rich waters. At the end of the day or when I've had enough retire to a modest but comfortable beach front accomodation for beers and bed.
I've never been to Exmouth, would that be the kind of place for that kind of holiday? Looking for suggestions please fella's.
Cheers

a Mouthfool
Submitted by unhurry on Thu, 2013-08-29 11:46For all of you who ascribe to the "kiss-and-release" philosophy, read on:
Doctors didn't flounder when a young man accidentally swallowed a live fish — blocking his airway and almost choking him to death.
The bizarre mishap occurred when the 22-year-old, on a fishing trip to the Murray River, decided to pucker up and kiss his first catch of the day.
Unimpressed by his romantic advances, the fish wriggled free and slid headfirst down the man's throat, complete with fishing line and hook attached.
Its fins and spines swiftly became hooked in his oesophageal and hypopharyngeal mucosa — defying multiple attempts to pull it out.
What followed was a life-saving medical marathon, involving three hospitals, over 150km of driving and an array of quick-thinking doctors.
In severe respiratory distress, the man was first driven to the hospital in Barham, a country town of 1200 people on the NSW-Victorian border, where an emergency cricothyrotomy was performed.
With some oxygen getting in, but deteriorating fast, he was transferred to a larger regional hospital at Kerang, Victoria, where the only local GP with advanced airway training was called in to perform an orotracheal intubation.
The procedure proved extremely tricky - the now-dead fish was completely obscuring the oropharynx — but a size 4 microlaryngoscopy tube was eventually squeezed past, allowing the patient to be properly ventilated at last.
But this was not the end of his woes: now surgeons at a third hospital, Bendigo, were left with the challenge of getting the dead critter out.
In what is thought to be a unique procedure, they opted to cut off the fish's tail and core out its upper body with a bone rongeur. This "collapsed" the remaining part of the fish, so scissors could be passed down its side to snip the scales and spines that were holding it in place. The leftover carcass was eventually pulled out with forceps.
Dr Laurence Weinberg, who reported the case this week, said to his knowledge it was the only Australian case of airway obstruction caused by a whole live fish. Similar cases from overseas had all proven fatal.

New Stellas
Submitted by 81macca on Thu, 2013-08-29 11:27Anybody using the new Stellas and what do you think of them? Better or worse than the SW model. I have had couple of minor failures (bearings) with my SW's and looking for a new reel for GT's. Looking at the 18000 or jumping the fence and going to the Dogfight. Its not so much the failures it's the time the reel is away getting fixed that pisses me off.

Boat security
Submitted by Riles on Wed, 2013-08-28 20:24
G'day, I was seeing if anyone had any other security ideas for a boat parked in the front yard. Everything gets removed off the boat after every trip but I was trying to think of a way to stop people from creeping around (not that I have seen anyone doing it but I'm sure it goes on). The boat has a full cover and a trailer hitch lock but I was thinking of getting a wireless sensor door bell similar to this (http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com.au/viewitem?itemId=271230482354&cmd=VIDESC) and popping on the rear seat facing the zips. At least then if it tripped and I was home I could pop out to investigate. Just chasing people's thoughts and ideas.

D9 Today
Submitted by Tradewind on Wed, 2013-08-28 18:46Headed to D9 this morning at dawn with Mattacus.
Conditions this morning after the pre-dawn showers was beautiful on the water.
As we turned up to the D9 looking for the barge we could actually see the pinkies swimming around.
Anchored and burleyed up. Snapper were interested in the burley but wouldn't take a bait (Squid and Pilch) or a jig.
I'm new to jigging and the chances are I wasn't doing it well but they'd investigate the jig a few times and leave it alone
Frustrating we couldnt get one on the hook but was great to be out there and see them.

Koonacs/Gilgies
Submitted by Brad Y on Wed, 2013-08-28 15:12Im heading out for a look for some tucker tonight and looked through the fisheries bag limits to see what I could have and how I could catch them.
10 per person (not heaps but a feed is a feed)
So how do you catch them? Well fisheries have no information in their pamphlets at all!
A quick phone call to the local fisheries office and the bloke laughed. First time he has ever had someone ring up and clear the matter first. Usually he said they get reports of people marroning out of season and go and catch them. Now here is the interesting part.
If you are out catching koonacs or gilgies in public waterways and you are using a drop net or a trap of some sort, apparently you are able to be charged with attempting to fish for marron out of season and possibly using illegal gear- you cant prove that you are intending them to not catch marron. Probably similar for going out C+R fishing for demersals during the ban.... Private property is fine but he suggested dont get caught between home and the property.
Fisheries need to do some clarification on fishing for gilgies/koonacs so people going out and doing the right thing in public waterways and not fishing for marron but koonacs/gilgies only are protected. Whether its a license or closed season or permitted methods.. something needs to be done I reckon.
At the end of the conversation he said the safest way to go about it was use the old meat on the end of a string and a scoop net method as the way to go. And make sure you are exactly 100% on your identification of the crayfish as if your caught with a marron, you are toast. He also added that this area has plenty around (from his experience) and wished me luck in getting a few!

Food for thought when voting on September 7....
Submitted by scottywiper on Wed, 2013-08-28 10:10Note that these are not my thoughts...Jamie Chester can't post on here and asked me to put them up...as he thought some people might find it interesting.
"Went and voted today as I won't be here for the election. Voted Shooters and Fishers and other outdoor recreational groups first but made sure that the libs were above labor and the greens (which were last) in the preferences. Personally I always fill out my senate voting slip in the preference section as well (an easy enough task if you can count to 50 or so) because then I can vote for a minor party but still have control over where my eventual vote will go (assuming that the minor party wont get up). I personally think it's important to do this as I can still make a statement by putting a one-policy group first (and allowing that group to receive the electoral funding from that primary vote rather than the over funded majors) and thus help send a message to the major parties as to what I consider to be an important issue while still being able to choose either liberal or labor. So for me it's not even important whether you are a lib or labor supporter - if you are a recreational fisherman or against government control over every little goddam thing we do then vote appropriately and send a message to the major parties. And if you don't understand anything that I'm saying - well that's my argument as to why compulsory voting is ridiculous because it gives ignorant/careless people the same amount of voice as those that are informed and considered."
