John Adams echo sounder course.
Submitted by Markie on Wed, 2013-09-11 15:41Iv had mi own boat for few months now and didnt exactly know how to use or get the best out of my echo sounder.
On monday i was booked in for a sounder course with John Adams a very good bloke might i add, who just recently wrote a veryy knowledgable and helpful book for beginners and even to the experienced.
Was very helpful and you will be surprised at some points mentioned about sounders so even the experienced could learn a thing or two. Iv definitely come out of this course understanding alot more ebout echo sounders and how to use them and how to get the best out of your sounder. I highly reccomend this course if you are interested in getting to know about/more on echo sounders. You also get one of his books included with the course so if u forget anything all the info is there.

Rod for an Alvey - Ozflex or other?
Submitted by Diesel80 on Wed, 2013-09-11 15:09Hi, recently I got a new Alvey reel (won it) and I am looking for a suitable rod to pair it up with.
I was speaking to a member at my club with regard to the Ozflex rods, he bought one and fitted his alvey to it (about 5 years a go I am guessing). There was excessive play in the reel seat and caused movement in the reel with it fitted. When they returned the rod to the store they demonstrated this issue on the other rods in the store before they bought another brand.
Ozflex get a good rap on this site and other fishing forums and for the price are almost a no brainer if this issue has been fixed. Does anyone know if the rods now seat and secure the alvey reels snugly?
If not Ozflex, then what are my other options? Wilson has bought snyder glas, are these still as good as they used to be?
The action the rod will see will be 100% surf fishing in any kind of weather on monthly club field days. Chasing anything from Salmon to Spanish mackeral from the beach. Big sinkers, baits and casting distance is the order of the day for this setup, I have other rods and reels for smaller species, more finesse fishing.
I think I am keen on about a 14-15ft rod, and i am happy to consider second hand options if a reliable source can be advised? Gumtree and the Quokka are not turning up many rods of late. I missed one for $50 the other week, but the rod was a bit shorter than I wanted (but would be good to get used to the alvey casting).
I will be speaking to other Alvey fishos at the club, but I have noted that their rods are years old and doubt that they would be readily available these days.
Any information greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
D80

bent street boat ramp again
Submitted by petermac on Mon, 2013-09-09 16:38finally the dredge has turned up at the bent street ramp , I had a chin wag with them and they hope they will be dredging by the end of the week and be all finished by xmass , I asked what was going to happen with the material they dredge out of the channel and was surprised when they said it was going to be pumped to the beaches either side of the ramp to try and build up both beaches, which brings me to the question I didn't ask them but ask all the amateur marine biologists / oceanographers out there on FW does this mean the dredged material will all end back up in the channel after the first big blow next winter ??

outboard service bunbury
Submitted by unhurry on Mon, 2013-09-09 12:45Hi guys,
I know that I may be crossing the lone somewhat posting this under "fishing discussion" rather than " boating and oitboards" but I reckon this is the most popular forum so here goes...
I am asking for reccomendations for an outboard mechanic in the Bunbury area.
I do not trust my own mechanical skills when it comes to servicing a 150hp 4 stroke and I would be grateful for any reccomendations forthcoming.
Thanks,
Unhurry

A feral pig has raided a De Grey campsite and drank their beer. The pig now has a taste for beer and is acting like a teenager at schoolies week!

Rod Repairs?
Submitted by Justin M on Sun, 2013-09-08 20:30So this is the end result of my pinkie capture on Friday night. Simple question seeing as I am not that clued up on rod repairs...is this salvagable? Would it be a matter of using ferrules to join it up (perhaps just the longer section?) Perhaps the end guide could just be added back onto where the blank broke off, after tiding it up? Though I'd imagine it would affect the whippyness and action of the rod, seeing as I bought it for casting metals etc (it's an 8ftr)
Oh yeah, please don't laugh at my sloppy guide repair...it looks ugly but it turned out strong as an ox. Not bad for a noob I reckon

In the market for a new car
Submitted by Riles on Sun, 2013-09-08 18:10G'day,
Its time to trade in the Hilux and purchase a new second hand vehicle. I'm looking at spending around $25000 I've been looking at the 08/09 Patrols or the 06 Landcruisers SUV's. I'm definatley looking at a 4x4 with at least a 3t towing capacity.
I'd love to hear peoples views on both of these vehicle and any others that they think will fit my needs.
Cheers

Submitted by outdoinit on Sun, 2013-09-08 15:30Well they weren't slow today, we and another boat left the marina just before 7:30 and decided to head to a couple of spots that I haven't fished for months and months, Well we didn't even get there when I came across a new small patch.
The end result for our boat alone was 9 dhuies, 1 snapper and a blackass. See photos, (7 dhuies released)
The other boat managed 2 dhuies 1 x Baldie and a blackass..
Back home by 10:30am, filleted fish, washed boat and sat down to fresh dhuie for lunch..

Just bought a Pacemaker and want to catch fish!
Submitted by hardyakker on Sun, 2013-09-08 14:59Hi a couple of mates and i have just purchased an old 18ft pacemaker with an early 90's two stroke 90hp merc swinging off the back and now we are looking to catch some fish! We want to start reasonably close as we dont have heaps of offshore fishing experience and an older setup. So the question is where do we go and what do we do? Im not asking for your secrets i know how hard earned and closely guarded they can be! Just some tips for getting amongst it and hopefully snagging a few arm stretchers. The boat is kept in wembley so we are looking at launching in the river or hillarys mainly but we re open to suggestions!

Since then I've been out twice for NADA ,WTF!!! Now starting to question myself ? Anyone else get any snapper last night

Kill Bags
Submitted by Geoff78 on Sun, 2013-09-08 09:53Can anyone recommend a kill bag to keep fish cold, instead of an esky/icebox? I'm looking for something that could hold 4 large dimersals. The bags I've seen online seem too large for my purposes.

Surf shark rod.
Submitted by Sunburntfeet on Sat, 2013-09-07 23:11Looking at gettin in to some land based sharks, need some rod advice. I'll be running a Salina 16000 bait feeder, 50lb braid with 150m top shot mono for slide baits. Unsure of what rod length/ weight. I'm thinking 12' 24kg rod will probably kill me, so do I go 12' 10-15kg or 10' 15-24kg or something else??? Any advice would be appreciated.
