Fisheries GW Shark Tagging
Submitted by chris raff on Wed, 2012-09-26 10:22 I've heard of these accoustic stations just interested in learning more about them etc ...obviously when a shark swims past it goes off but if it swims back and forth all day the tech can't discriminate it as 1 or 10 different sharks ...satellite tracking of individual sharks would be the ideal , which would have be good in determining shark or sharks responsible for attacks...however 70 odd Gw's have been tagged apparently ...I presume they will get some more whilst they're in the sound ...be great if fisheries could release a app whereas concerned persons could download and be immediately kept in the loop when a shark is in a particular area...

Anyone have any good live bait tank on their tinnys?
Submitted by Braxi on Wed, 2012-09-26 03:09G'day,
Im looking to install a live bait tank on my tinny for barra season. Ive got an old 4.3 Clark tinny so theres not LOADS of room but ive got a suitable tub. Just wondering how other people have set theirs up. A mate has one that circulates new water all the time so the bait stays alive indefinately. Aerators only seem to work for a while. Cheers.

HDS sounder photos
Submitted by flexn on Tue, 2012-09-25 21:50Still trying to get used to my HDS 8 and I'm having trouble identifying fish on the sounder.
I'm using palette 13 and the sensitivity is around 60 and the colourline around 70. The transducer is transom mount 50/200khz and this was taken on the 200khz setting.
This photo was taken when I was catching fish

and this when I thought there was fish (there was fish on the surface but I thought there would be some on the bottom but nothing? It showed what I thought was a school on the bottom and these were here the hole time I was fishing.
Also what speed can I go before the reading become inaccurate? What palette do people use? what kind of sensitivity for what waters?
Cheers

Graphite 12" rod
Submitted by trav32 on Tue, 2012-09-25 18:40This might be crazy, but I'm looking for a 12" rod primarily to suit an 8000 baitrunner with #20 mono, but also keen to slap the Stella 20k on it when sharks are around (average whalers). The Stella runs #50 braid. Can you think of a rod preferably under $200?

Trout lures and flies
Submitted by grantarctic1 on Tue, 2012-09-25 13:58Hi Crew, i have been asked by some members what lures i use for trout fishing in the dams. So i thought i would post up some pictures of the lures and flies i like the most . Some lures are quite expensive but i asure you lots of the cheeper types work just as well and in fact when it gets windy i usualy go for the cheep spinners with a bit of weight in them so i can cast into the wind.
Theses are a few of my spinners that have all caught fish in Harvey dam . The orange and black wipp is the one i bought yesterday at the servo and caught a nice rainbow on it. All of theses lures are quite cheep to buy but work well.
This group of lures are also cheep to buy ( compared to other brands ) but all have worked well with good swiming action. Lots of cheeper lure don't swim very well and are a waste of money. These few in the picture have impressed me for the price .
Here are some clasic RMG lures and some other types of lures that work well.
Now to my favorite minnow lures. Cheep lures can work but sometimes you need to trick fussy trout with floating, sinking and suspending type lures. There are a lot of new brands out now that probaly are better but i'm a bit old school and cant resist the classic Rapala minnow and others. The XRaps are a new addition for me and i'm very impressed with the way you can finness the action to temp very fussy trout.
For the fly fishers these are the main flies i use. The Wooly Bugger has to be the go to fly for the dams down south and i have had all of the variations work for me .
Close up of a Black Wooly Bugger and the Olive Green variation
Wooly Bugger variations with bead heads and tinsell bodys + larger colour patterns
Mr's Simpsons also catch fish when worked very slow in the water
Craigs Night time , can tempt the trout if they are being fussy.
I hope this helps some of you who would like to try trout and redfin fishing with lures. I am no expert, but after a few years chasing freshwater fish these are the lures i take and use. As i said a lot of the time i throw the cheeper spinners around during long days on the dam. They cast well, are cheep enough to throw close to trees and snags and you can work them at different depths to find fish. You don't have to spend a fortune to catch trout and redfin, but let me warn you, after catching a big rainbow or brown the addiction sets in and you will find your wallet emptied on just a handfull of expensive tiny lures. lol
Cheers Grant .

PM problems.. Sorted
Submitted by Quobbarockhopper on Tue, 2012-09-25 10:45Anyone else having problems with PMs lately?
It looks like everytime I send one, it doesnt go through and doenst show up in my sent box. it tells me the message has been sent, but must be getting lost in the post somewhere along the way...
If I reply to someone or continue on an old message string, it works OK, but trying to send a new one doesnt have much luck...

Tonic Sunglasses, High Contrast Copper Bronze Photochromic?
Submitted by kfish on Tue, 2012-09-25 10:29Has anyone got a pair of these? Is the colour transition visually obvious? I can't tell if they are changing colour and I'm worried I got a polycarbonate pair instead of a glass photochromic...
Is there any other way I can tell if they are glass photochromic lens?

Mackerel Island off Onslow - Reason for closure
Submitted by dalaisc on Tue, 2012-09-25 08:13I thought I read a few months ago that the resort was closing because Chevron bought out the lease.
In today's West Australian paper (page 1 of West Business) it states that the Mackerel Island's is seeking to lease 80% of its accommodation to Chevron. Good news is that they will keep 20% for us fisherman.
Looks more like a business decision rather than their hand been forced.

Anyone fish metro sunday?
Submitted by JohnF on Mon, 2012-09-24 10:17We did a short stint on the 3 mile.....everything against us, tide, middle of the day, extremely green and turbid water. Fished soft plastics for a few hours till the sea breeze stormed in for a rather predictable very average day, just a few Bakers released.
Interested to hear if anyone else went out and if they had any success in the dirty post storm water, bait or artificials?

Exmouth Deckis available
Submitted by dalaisc on Mon, 2012-09-24 09:47A mate of mine is heading up this Saturday for 2 weeks and is keen to do some boat fishing. He loves his fishing but has had little exposure to boat fishing or catching big fish. His experience does not go much beyond chasing tailor off the rocks.
He is up there with a mate so if anyone wants someone to split costs with then please message me and I will send you his number. He is a top bloke.

Garden weeded and mulched. Check.
Brownie points replinished? Too right they are!
Freezer needs a top up. Check.
Watch out fish! Next weekend can't come quick enough. Long range forecast looking good. Moon / sun positioning looking good. Unfortunately Freo have the week off playing, so I won't be watching the footy!
Better go fishing instead!
