Who has overcome sea-sickness?
Submitted by beau on Mon, 2012-06-25 19:56Yep, I get seasick, and I get it bad, really bad! Last time I was out on the ski just drifting in what everyone else would "glassy" conditions and I must have burleyed up at least 5 bloody times. I can get queezy just watching boats leaving the Dawesville Cut as I fish from the rocks, or waiting in the line-up waiting for that right wave as a set of solid storm swells roll on through underneath me. I even remember getting queezy fishing off mums uncles boat when it was still tied up to his jetty in the mandurah canals. Okay okay guys get up off the floor and stop laughing!
What I want to know is, is there hope? Will I ever get to go on a charter with Whitey? Will I ever be able to go on a live aboard charter out at the Abrohlos? Will I even finally get to accept an invitation to go out on someones boat that I have met through this site?!
If you have overcome sickness I want to hear your story. Do I keep persisting and hopefully outgrow it?
One thing I have noticed since I bought the ski is if I keep my mind ticking over by casting and casting lures or twitching plastics instead of dragging a big stinking bait on the bottom I dont get that queezy feeling, as quick! Another thing I've noticed is if the wind is up and fresh and getting a bit of overspray on the face I feel a lot better for longer too.
Hopefully someone has a success story to bump up my confidence!
Ps. Oh and for now, what tablets can you guys reccomend that wont make me drousy as hell and foaming at the mouth!
Cheers blokes

There are a couple more on the way so I'll need to have a garage sale to sell them all to feed the addiction..........

Mindarie today
Submitted by Jaseg71 on Mon, 2012-06-25 17:13I fished today at Mindarie on the ocean side of the rock wall and burlied up a about 20 big fish. They would not take squid, mulie or prawn. I put a ball of burlley on the hook and it got nailed. These fish were big. I had 20lb mono and got smashed every time. Just couldn't stop them. They look sort of like a big skippy but not sure, they had a black v shaped tail. I estimate them to be 10 to 12 lb. Can anyone shed some light on what they could be?

pe vs lb rating
Submitted by grayzeee on Mon, 2012-06-25 16:37The pe rating
Great for knowing the exact amount of line to fit on your spool ,if you're that bothered about getting 300 meters over 285, but apart from that??
"i need a rod for PE 3-5 but i'll be running 3"
"pe 3 - 30lb?"
" no , pe-3 45lb"
I guess I'm trying to say I'd much rather know the breaking strain that the cross sectional thickness.
ahhhhhhhh. got it off my chest at last!

What knot is this?
Submitted by Quobbarockhopper on Mon, 2012-06-25 16:32I got this pic somewhere off the net (maybe even from here) a while ago and was wondering what knot is being used for the droppers? It looks pretty slim line and effective, does anyone know what it is?

Getting fisheries involved
Submitted by AlwaysFishin on Mon, 2012-06-25 15:45I went for a fish this morning at my local and found a few other guys fishing there as well. Just as I was about to leave, one of the other guys there emptied his catch bucket to clean his catch. Amongst some tailor and small skippy was a pink snapper that would've measured no more than 15cm. I confronted the bloke and asked "what the hell are you doing with that"? He gave me a hostile stare and said "what".... I informed him that pink snapper have a minimum size limit of 50cm and he replied "oh well who cares"... Couldn't believe the utter disregard...
Walking back to my vehicle I thought screw this wanker, I dialed fishwatch and dobbed the prick in. Gave them all the details including rego. Unfortunately he had left before fisheries arrived, but I believe they were going to pay him a visit.
It's dickheads like him with an arrogant and ignorant attitude that wreck things for everyone who does the right thing and I wouldn't hesitate to call fishwatch again.

So you think you can fish?
Submitted by rpriches on Mon, 2012-06-25 07:13Hi all,
Alright guys, with with production of a new fishing video in full swing with some top footage already this year, I'm searching for a few more gun WA fishos to showcase their talents.
If you think you're at the pointy end of fishing and/or are doing something a little different with consistent results and want to be filmed I'm keen to hear from you.
No need to worry about talking into the camera or anything like that, you just catch and show a bit of respect for the fish and the rest will be taken care of.
Here's an idea of what I want to see you capture (and release preferably but not compulsory):
- Pinky +7kg
- Dhu +12kg
- Sambos +20kg
- Mulloway (big from the beach preferably)
- Baldies +4kg
- Hapuka, grey banded cod
- big queen snapper
- yellowtail kings +10kg
- Tuna
- Marron (if you have a dam)
- LBG
- Also interested in Northern species too for those living up north
As I mentioned this is just a rough guide, so if you think you're in the top 10% of fishos and want to get involved and have a bit of fun doing so send me a PM with a bit of info about yourself and we can go from there.
P.S. The weathers shaping up alright for this weekend, and no, the subject line is not the name of the vid : )

Jigging The dhuies
Submitted by hayden on Sun, 2012-06-24 22:22Well woke up early to a nice cold morning with no wind around great rods in car bag packed im off to wades house to pick him up
Arrived at wade house at 5:00am hook the boat up and on we go
We arrived at our desternation after a 2 hour drive... gear in boat and in the water it go and off to our first spot...
On our way to the first spot wade seen something rise on the sounder hmm interesting had alook around and found fish so out came the plastic and metal jigs on we go first drop nothing then as wade kept jigging away i threw out the platic and "WHAM" on the drop after i nice fight and wade thinking it was a dhu he hooked up on the bottom he got his up to the boat Double header amber jacks me i had a rat sambo....
few more drops and after few more fights with sambos they just went off the chew so was time to move off we went to our next spot..........
Arrived to the next spot with fish on the sounder..............
few drops and we had nothing until i started to wind up and got hit mid water thinking to my self sambo or maybe shark. Waiting for it to bite off or pull the hook on to the surface it came nice fat and unreal shark mackrel. Could not belive it few happy photos and back in the water it went....
After that we had nothing come up so made the call to head back to the first spot...
Got back to our first spot and fish all over sounder once again thinking yes we should get something here plastics down and we got nothing at all.Wade decided to drop a metal jig down and straight away hooks up solid nice after a very great fight up came a very nice dhufish.... Thought why he plays around with that its my turn grab his rod drop the jig down and after a few jigs up and down i was on solid to a very nice dhufish got it all on the go pro so put mine back in the water to fight another day.....
We both put the jigs back down this time wade came up solid that is a better fish was a great fight and up came a nice 11kg dhufish....while he stuffed around i had came on strong with a solid hook up great fight on light gear up came another dhufish great we all ready bagged out on dhufish so this went back to fight another day... after have 4 fish in 4 drops we had a few more drifts for only few hits but nothing so called it quits and headed home
so all in all what a great day out and fish 25 to 35 meters off water in a 4.1meter dinghy just goes to show u dont always need a big boat..........
Cheers
Haydo

Pe4-5 rod help
Submitted by turts on Sun, 2012-06-24 18:24Hi guys was lucky enough to win a saltist 6500! Looking for an appropriate rod to match
I know it's more suited as a pe6-8 reel but I'm planning to run 50lb on it
Any advice on a rod to tee it up with
So far looking at....
Tcurve jig spin 200
Saltiga hiramasa 63s
Saltiga combi jerk 64
Hiramasa 63s may be more appropriate for pe4 rather than 50lb?
Also already have outlaid a bit on Catalina 6500 jigging outfit and a saltiga 4000 outfit already so wanna try not to go too expensive in the rod side of things if possible...
Look forward to your thoughts!
Cheers

How many $$
Submitted by Sainter07 on Sun, 2012-06-24 13:04Hi,
I have done most of my fishing from a dingy pulling up flathead in the waters surrounding Hobart. I have recently moved to WA and see all of these fantastic beaches to be fished. I am a complete novice, and I would like some opinions on beach/surf rods and reels.
Being a novice, and not overly flush with cash, I was wondering if those cheap surf rods that you can buy in Big W for example would be ok enough, or would I have to spend a bit more money?
Catching something worth eating would be nice, so any tips for the Mandurah area would be appreciated. I am also planning a trip to Kalbarri so I would be taking the rod up there as well.
Thanks in advance

Bleeding Dhufish
Submitted by C.P on Sun, 2012-06-24 11:21This subject has probably been raised before so apologies if thats the case. I'm just wondering how others treat thier catch in regards to cutting the fishes throat or spiking the brain etc. I'm particularly interested in your opinions about dhuies. I always have a slurry of ice in the esky & i put my fish straight in there. I doesn't seem to make much difference with KGs but with dhuies there always seems to be one fillet that has a pink tinge on the inside. So lately I've been necking them & that seems to produce two clear fillets. Not sure that it makes any difference to the taste though. Interested in your opinions.

why?
Submitted by Jeffree on Sun, 2012-06-24 08:59why is it that i struggle to release undersize pinkys successfully in 40m of water due to barotrauma, and when i was fishing in 300m of water the pinkys swam down by itself so easily??
stupid question, but are deep deep water pinkys less susceptible to barotrauma??

Rest in peace, Ray Green
Submitted by randall df223 on Sat, 2012-06-23 22:32Today we lost one of life's true gentleman, Ray Green. For those who fished and stayed at Monkey Mia regularly, I am sure you know Ray well. He always had a smile on his face and time to help anyone in need. Ray was a keen camper and fisherman. He is one of the most loved "oldies" of Monkey Mia. Tonight my thoughts are with Ray's beautiful wife Alma, and all those who are sad at his passing. Wishing you tight lines and fair weather Ray Green. You will always be in the thoughts of those you touched. RIP.

FISHO MAGAZINE
Submitted by Miss fitz on Sat, 2012-06-23 19:45Hey guys! I know it's a long shot but I was wondering if anyone has ever heard or especially has a copy of FISHO MAGAZINE, they would be from a few years back tho, any time before 2004, I would really appreciate it if anyone who has one could send one to me! The company went bankrupt after a few years so I dont have any copies as I was like 6... :/
My dad was the owner of the company and a writer of some columns too- his name was Barry Howlett. Unfortunatly in 2004 he died, when he was around I was too young to appreciate all the fishing knowledge he could pass on to me and now I'm older and a complete fishing nut I wish he could teach me everything he knew!
Sorry for the sob story but I can't stress how desperate I am to get my hands on a copy of his magazine
Any helpfull comments would be greatly appreciated

Ocean potion
Submitted by Miss fitz on Sat, 2012-06-23 17:32I was walking along city beach the other day and I found an almost new lure- Im pretty sure it's an ocean potion stickbait in the blue mackerel colour (16cm) and I was wondering what type of fish would you go for if using this lure? And where would you use it? Obviously in the ocean but would it be more suited to be fished off a boat then the beach?

Fencer wanted
Submitted by makai on Fri, 2012-06-22 18:49Hi guys,
like many others in Perth, we had fence damage in the storms. I need a quote (insurance job) to remove a rear limestone wall and steel gates, and remove a side boundary fence (some super six, some asbestos) damaged in the storms, and replace both rear fence (including 2 x sets double gates) and side boundary fence with colorbond.
I would prefer the job to go to FW member, so if you are in that business or can recommend someone, please PM me your contact details. I am located in Mosman Park.
Cheers, Peter
