Large Kayaks
Submitted by Leemo on Mon, 2012-06-18 19:09 G'day guys. I'm in the market for a kayak to suit myself....... for those who don't know me, im a huge bloke haha. It needs to be wide enough to fit my fat ass comfortably for a couple of hours at a time, and stable enough to rock around a bit. I don't want to be spending a fortune, just after something for minimal cost. It also needs to have a rod holder/s and a bit of storage space.
Any suggestions?
Cheers, Liam.

WA Rock Spots - Angel Rings
Submitted by pas on Mon, 2012-06-18 16:58Hi Guys, Bulliten doing the rounds so looking for some help, drop me a line if you can help
Cheers
Stan
The Australian National Sportfishing Association in partnership with the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation and the Department of Fisheries and Forestry is commencing a trial of “Angel Rings” around Australia. Angel Rings are lifesaving buoys placed at popular rockfishing spots to aid rockfishers, tourists and the members of the public who slip or get washed in to the water.
Angel rings are designed to keep them afloat until a rescue can be organised or as a buoyancy aid to assist them to get to a safer spot to exit the water.
Stan Konstantaras from ANSA wants to know where anglers around Australia would like us to locate some of these new life rings and goes on to say “We are looking for popular rockfishing spots that could be dangerous to local, visiting and inexperienced anglers in adverse conditions. Iconic spots that are well known and often written about in the media will also be considered”
The plan is to set up pilot projects around Australia and then get the assistance of local anglers, fishing clubs and community groups to look after them and expand the project. With 116 rings in NSW already and 47 confirmed rescues under the NSW Branch belt, the project is worthwhile and saves lives. The roll out of the project will also encompass an education campaign to raise the safety awareness of anglers who fish the rocks and make them a bit more experienced in reading the conditions. Angel Rings are just a small part of the rockfishing safety spectrum.
Drop Stan Konstantaras a line at pastelli@netspace.net.au and let him know where you think a ring is needed.

sundays mixed bag
Submitted by brenz on Mon, 2012-06-18 12:16Headed out sunday early morning in hunt of some bream... Well to say the bream were slow was an understatment but on the up side the flattys were out in force. After around an hour of breaming the weather looked to nice to be stuck in the river and the missus suggested it was snapper time , so with no hesitation we cranked up the boat got it on the trailer and off we went to swap boats. We unhitched the bream boat and re hitched up to the new coraline centerconsole only to be stopped by police whitlst doing up the shackles... Wondering what the hell i had done wrong i said "hi". the officer proceeeded to ask me what time i left in the morning , this now had me thinking he was a keen fisherman so i proceeded to say 6 am we left pearsall. He then replied with you will need to come and give a statement , after a short conversation he had explained that it was a crime scene and that had practically parked and driven off in the middle of it , so after a long statement of i saw nothing we were left thinking WTF! we ended up launching the boat late afternoon and headed out first in search of a few squid wich we managed straight away so it was off to the snapper grounds . The skippy were on fire in the shallows as usual and were hitting the new berkley ripple shad soft plastics like they were going out of fashion . we started the burley and wham the first snapper was on , after a shor tussle tika had the first fish on board , at 53 cm he was a perfect keeper, within minutes the second was on and up came a 62cm fish. As it was just the 2 of us we didnt need anymore fish so it was home time..
the skippy were set aside for slide baits whilst the snapper and squid were set aside for a few nice meals...

Garden island squid
Submitted by fishing fanatic on Mon, 2012-06-18 10:36Went out for some fishing of all sorts yesterday but with the wind being up a bit we decided to try for squid. drifting with jigs had no success and neither did anchoring and throwing them out. so we decided to set out some penicil jigs with trumpter and herring. the squid love them! we only ended up with 7 and dropping two before we headed home. but we had 3 over 30cm (33, 35 and 30) and then 4 over 20cm so didnt really need anymore. but yeah i dont know why but not a single jig was taken what so ever, even when put right next to the squid that had dropped of a pencil jig.

Fiji in September
Submitted by DBZ on Mon, 2012-06-18 09:13Hi all,
I am planning a trip to Fiji in September this year. Its not an all out fishing trip as I'm taking the cheese and kisses, but i would like to get out a couple of days at least.
Does anyone have recommendations for what islands or charters would be the best suited to this plan?
Thanks

Hump backs off two rocks
Submitted by Tankisnowfishing on Sun, 2012-06-17 20:24Went off two rocks today at about lunch time for a last minute might as well go fishing trip. About 25km south west from the marina we came across a couple of rather large hump backs. I thought it was the wrong time of the year but they were there. They were breaching so we went a few hundred meters around to pass them and they started to follow the boat. Must say it Was an awesome sight.
We finally got out to our mark nearly 40km out after the water turned to crap about 30km out. We persisted for a few drifts picking up two undersize dhu, and a couple of massive runs for no returns and a large foul hooked king George. However after the decky berleyed up and me not far off it we decided to call it a day.

Info Needed
Submitted by Sainter07 on Sun, 2012-06-17 19:30
Hi Guys,
I am fairly new to WA, and my fishing excursions have resulted in a big failure so far. I live in Pinjarra, and I hope to get up to Kalbarri sometime around late October for a week or so.
I have a 14ft fibreglass runabout and a Falcon sedan so no 4wd for me. Could anyone here give me a few tips for Kalbarri or anywhere around Mandurah in the meantime. With my relatively small boat, would it be worth hauling it up to Kalbarri?
Any helpful advice would be much appreciated.

just wondering what's your thoughts on these rods and if anyone has got one and if they are good, cause might go get one

woman becomes pregnant with squid after eating raw squid! sounds strange
Submitted by snappermiles on Sun, 2012-06-17 16:41A 63-year-old woman became 'pregnant' with 12 baby squid after eating calamari, according to a claim in a bio-tech report.
The real-life 'octo-mum', from South Korea, was eating a portion of cooked whole squid when she felt a sharp pain in her mouth.
The bizarre claim has been made in a scientific paper from the National Centre for Biotechnology Information in Bethesda, Maryland.
The lady told doctors that she could feel something in her mouth which they described as 'bug-like organisms'.
When examined, the doctors found 'baby cephalopods' attached to her mouth. These are small pods, covered in a cement-like material to make them stick.
Inside the pods is an 'ejaculatory apparatus' and sperm - with the apparatus expelling the sperm quite forcefully.
After the victim of the 'attack' was hospitalised, doctors removed the baby cephalopods from her gums, tongue and cheek. It was only then that the pods were formally identified as 'squid spermatophores.'
The Centre's paper says: 'She did not swallow the portion, but spat it out immediately. She complained of a pricking and foreign-body sensation in the oral cavity.
'Twelve small, white spindle-shaped, bug-like organisms stuck in the mucous membrane of the tongue, cheek, and gingiva [gums] were completely removed, along with the affected mucosa.
'On the basis of their morphology and the presence of the sperm bag, the foreign bodies were identified as squid spermatophores.'
According to Science 2.0, a spermatophore is similar to a cup of semen.
The site adds that there is still mystery around how spermatophores are implanted into the skin.
A similar case was reported in December last year when a woman in Japan suffered severe pains in her mouth after eating raw squid.
She took the remaining piece of squid with her to the Tosei General Hospital, the NCBI reports, and sperm bags were removed.
Incidents involving the impregnation of human mouths appear to be confined to the Far East where, generally, more raw fish is eaten.
When squid is prepared in the west, internal organs are removed meaning there is no risk of eating spermatophores.
Danna Staaf, a squid enthusiast from Science 2.0, said: 'The skin on your hands, and most of the rest of your body, is much too thick to get stuck.
'I've probably had hundreds of spermatophores ejaculate on my fingers and never felt a sting.'
According to the Biological Bulletin 'Spermatophores are either transferred to the female by the male's hectocotylus, a specialised arm, or by a long penis, which is present in species that lack hectocotyli.
'After being discharged from the spermatophore in the spermatophoric reaction, the sperm mass is encased in a thin covering, with the cement body at one end.
'This discharged structure, the spermatangium, may attach to the skin of the female or be deeply embedded in her skin or muscle.'
The reproduction of deep-sea squids is still something of a mystery simply because their habitat is hard to get to.

Inside the reef ningaloo
Submitted by Colesy on Sun, 2012-06-17 15:10When your fishing inside the reef do you have to go out through tantabiddi passage or do you normally have enough water to stay inside the reef with out going out to sea and come back inside where you fish. I downloaded navionics app for my phone just so could get a bit of an idea of the area and it looks quiet shallow

Marking your spot
Submitted by Ian Macca on Sun, 2012-06-17 11:00Hi all,
Chasing some advice on how to physcially mark a spot once you have found some good ground to have a crack at. I find it really frustrating when trying to anchor up and rarely get back on the spot you found on the sounder........
I have heard of chucking something overboard if the conditions allow or making some kind of weight with a float?
Lately it seems that anchoring and berlying up is the go.
Appreciate any tips!

Just bought a boat ( 5.3m ) and I am a newbie to boating.
I am hoping to head out soon for the first time ( when the weather settles ) and as a newbie going to stick to Cockburn Sound for now.
I would be grateful for any advice on the conditions I should be looking for when going out in the sound?
Are there any hazards / areas that I should avoid in the sound from a safety point of view?
I would also be grateful on advice on how and where to catch squid and if lucky snapper/KG whiting
