squid jigs and octo jigs

Just hoped off a plane from the east and resorted to an eastern states fishing magazine to read on the flight home.  read a couple of articles, one about squidding, which recommended daiwa esmeraldas md squid jigs and one about deep jigging for reef species (eg snapper) that recommended 'octo' jigs which are a weighted soft rubber covered jig that imitates an octopus or squid.  the author said that very little technique is required as the preferred movement is slowly across the bottom, with an occassional slow lift and drop back to the bottom.  The squid jig i reckon i'll find if a look in any decent tackle shop, but i haven't come across the latter (not that I have been looking).  anyone seen / used these?

Best setup for chasing reds + bottom bashing

Hi,

I am looking for a bottom bouncing setup that is strong enough and holds enough line for chasing reds and bottom dwelling species but light enough to give me a good challenge. I am trying to lighten a lot of my gear for a bit more sport. Been using a Calcutta 400TE on a Shimano 5-8kg Ian Miller Raider lately but might need to go a bit heavier when I go out deeper for chasing reds. Any ideas? Thanks.

Jigs

Hi, I looking for knife jigs between 30 - 80g. Anyone got any spare to sell? Please pm me...

Destroyed a Saltiga drag cap (Video)

Recently returned from a trip from steep point, had a fun time catching sharks off the beach till.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QCGOxK4nPs&feature=plcp

The spool is a studio ocean mark, even after putting another saltiga spool back on the drag still feels terrible. taking a closer look at the drag cap reveals that its had parts of it carved out.
has anyone else heard of this?

probably my fault for continually tightening the drag. Shark was a suspected 3m whaler we'd see earlier that night.

Best beach vehicle

Hi Guys just looking for some advise , I am wanting to buy a vehicle to use on the beach . What do you think is the best one for beach driving? looking to spend no more than $15k.

Quobba fishing report ( no photos yet)

Hey everyone as you might know went for a 2 and a bit week quobba trip. the swell and winds were all in favour for once with earsterlies pretty much around for the whole 2 weeks. but saddly the sharks decided to want to play abit more this year. hooking fish wasnt the problem up thier it was getting them away from the sharks quick enough, in speaking that we had in total 34 hook ups on balloons and spinning and get this 6 mackeral were landed 2 cobia and a 9 kg tailor. at one stage i thought the inital hook up was a shark because as my line started peeling i looked at my balloon and all i saw was brown and splashes. i my self got 2 mackeral biggest being 17kg and the other just under 13kg. plenty of other species were caught like spangies, afew pinkies for a change, trevelly, finger marks, spanish flags, bluebone, parrot fish and the odd baldie.
when we go up we tend to do things abit differently than other member that go up thier. other people like to sit there all day with a beer and a balloon out waiting for a hook up and their happy to do that but we tend to fish from about 5:30 6 till about 1ish  and afterthat go back to camp get a feed and head off around the coast for the afternoon. when we do that i always pack my flickie and afew twisties and nuclear chickens to cast over loverly looking holes which probly are rarely fished. this year just doing that in the afternoons i caught some prettty amazing fish like tailor parrotfish pinkies cudas types of snappas trevelly and some hookups which i think need some heavier gear as i had to re-spool my flickie about 3 or 4 times.
overall was the best trip had so far if it wasnt for the sharks would have had alot more pictures to show but to be 100% honest this is the reason why they say catching fish i abonus because there isnt a much better spot to be than the quobba coast watching whales doing areals 20 meters of whistlers and dolfins rounding up bait balls is an expeirance you only get in special places. i will put some pictures up later tonight or tomorrow night depending if my house is still standing:)
comment would be good to know if you been up their recently and noticed the amount of sharks are actually more than normal

Fishwreckapedia

The first pic (bluemarlinmakomagic) in the Blue Marlin section of Fishwreckapedia looks very much like a Black Marlin to me.

Tuesday night

Guys, please check and read the bom forecast for tomorrow night.  Would hate to see anyone hurt or more property damaged.

fishing tonight

hey all

pakced up the gear to head to north mole tonight for a snapper fish, first time this season going for the snapper only to get there and to see it closed, first time iv seen it closed. water was rough as, after deciding we couldnt be too bothered going anywhere else for snapper we decided to go for a quick fish in east fremantle in the river. only had about 5 casts around the pylons before the rains came but managed a big skippy, 2 big tarwine and a bust off by somin bigger that we assumed to be a big bream or another large skippy. i dont fish the river at all but was quite suprised to see that amount of quality fish in such little time. will defenatly go back their. also does any one know how rough in terms of swell or wind that the north mole gets closed off??

Warnbro/Garden island south side

If weather permitts will be heading out into warnbro sound and working ourselves to the fathoms behind south side of garden island.

Was wondering if anyone had any ideas on where to fish? is it worth fishing any of the wrecks out there or three sisters? or even the tyre wreck?

First time out there, so was wondering if anyone had any reports or tips that might be helpful

Cheers,

Jamie

Or if you are a local from darwin and want to hang around for some fishing, let me know!

fish scaling bag?

Have heard about a bag that you put small fish in (such as whiting) ,tow it behind your boat for a time and it will scale your fish.

Anyone used these bags and how good a job does it do?

no wonder fishing has a bad name in WA....

http://www.perthnow.com.au/lifestyle/where-the-fish-are-biting-this-week/comments-e6frg3sl-1226181289986

Check comment 60.......no wander we get a bad name...probaly more into it. F****** stupid to say it on a public news site, let alone basiacally admitting to doing it.

Skippers ticket

Hi fellow fishers, just  wanted to find out what others thought of the current training required in obtaining your skippers ticket ??

I for one think that the training must be improved as it is just not possible to obtain the skills that are reqiured to take command of a vessel and head out into the deep blue after just a couple of days training. I know that cost will no doubt raise its head  should I receive any feed back but you only have to look at recent events over the past couple of years to see that it additional traings is long overdue.

Would you let your son or daughter loose on the roads  and drive V8 car that was capable of 200kph after a couple of days training. Food for thought.

How many times have we all seen the boat in front leaving from Hillaries, Ocean Reef, Mindarrie etc on the wrong side and speeding out of the 5k zone and they are not even out of of the marina area, also the same on the way back in.

Should the following topics be included and be mandatory,  boat and engine maintenance, radio and communication, basic chart reading , and GPS  to name but a few.

Unless the course has changed since I obtained my licence (approx 6 years ago) none of the topics mentioned were covered and when I did mine we were assured that no one would fail, you do not get that promise when you do your car licence and even then there are stipulations upon obtaining your driving licence.

Can you imagine the outcome, you obtain you skippers ticked and you are now free to head out on your first excursion with a coule of mates, the weathers not too bad 15k of wind with 1mtr swell.  3 hours into your fishing trip it turns pear shape, its now blowing 25k of wind and the swell is now on 1.5 and heading up to 2mtr swell and you are 20k from port ??. I have the feeling we have a potential rescue on the cards.

You do not get or gain boating experience after a couple of days training.

What are your thoughts.

Hi All

Looking to do some fishing no more than 5 Mile out from the Perth Coast. What species are common at this time of year? Would prefer to do some bait/soft plastic bottom fishing for Snapper, Dhu's etc. Is this doable this time of year? Any other info would also be appreciated.

Cheers
