Mitchell Parts

I have a dear favourite Mitchell ORCA 80S Pro reel here in need of some parts. Do any of you guys know who best to talk to? I did get a new spool etc through Oceanside Tackle a while back.

Gero Mulloway??

Hey guys I'm a geraldton local and have been fishing the area for the last few years targeting the usual suspects tailor, whiting, bream in the river etc. Ive caught the odd 2-3kg mully while going for tailor at tarcoola beach and around drummonds but recently getting into the stories of 15 20kg upwards fish being caught around town, could anyone shed some light on spots, baits, weather or tides?? I have already searched the forum and heard southgates and the back of the lives as hotspots? Is that the north side of southgates and how would sunset beach or the lives fish? Summer or winter better?? Anyone had luck on live whiting? Sorry for the million questions guys, just wanna do the research before I start putting in the hours, any info at all would be very helpful :) Ps. Anyone keen to team up and hunt the mighty mullla just let me know as I usually fish alone..

Fireline Exceed

Recently changed over from 6lb Fireline to the 6lb Fireline Exceed.

The Exceed seems to be far weaker especially at the knot.

Just wondering if I have got a bad batch, or if anyone else has experienced this?

Bit windy for snapper last nite - so I went to the barges instead (PGFC Social Nite)

Well, last nite was not the nite to have a crack at the snapper, so I went along to the PGFC Social Nite at the RPYC Annex down in Mews Road, Fremantle.

They had Jeremy Green, head of Maritime Archaeology at the WA Museum down to talk about the barges aka the Rottnest Deepwater Graveyard. I think its the second time that he has given the talk publically, it was offered once at the State Library of WA, and sold out there in a couple of days as well.

A bit different from heading down to the barges for a fish, the talk was on why there were so many ships were in the area and the fish were pretty much incidental.

The area was designated a dumping area in the 30's, because the government was concerned about the boats being stripped, and then simply abandonded on the shore. Later, after WWII, ships, munitions and trucks were dumped there at the end of the lend-lease program.

They had some interesting images of the area, through aerial magnetometer survey, some fantastic video of the wrecks themselves via submersible and tech divers.

Following that, Rhyss Whittred from Taylor Marine, Australia's Furuno Agent, ran a few WASSP demos while we enjoyed a chat, pizza and a few beers!

Pop over to the PGFC and see what they're up to, its not just the FADs, and they're active over winter when its sometimes hard to get out for a fish.

Don're forget to check their new website!

Anyway, anyone know whats the go with fishing in busso? squid perhaps? mulla? anything??

Any help will be appreciated.

Reel Maintenance

Most off the time with my gear I simply wash the salt off after a trip with a nice soft water spray from a hose. Every 3rd or 4th trip a bit a CRC to all the moving parts.

Now I have a Stella 8000SW, and I dont want to baby it (I never do) but obviously it needs a bit more TLC than I am used to. All previous reels have been hardworking like Saragosas and Spheros, among some Penns and I hate to say some Okumas, which I thought years ago was good because of the warrantee.

Some advice needed on Stella Care?

Fishing Charter Rule - No Mono - Someone Explain Why ?

Noticed this recently on a few charter boats - bring your own gear but braid only...

Is this just a filtering method to keep cruddy gear off board or is there something else involved ?

line capacitys

when they state x meters of x lb line, what line are they working this off condidering mono and braid of the same lb are way different.

picked up a quantum surge SU80F of a local chap and pick it up tomorrow, but for the life of me cant find anything on the net regaurding a scale of x meters of x diameter line.

Thanks

Heading north of Lanno Thursday

Just seeing if anyone has ventured along the ( new road ) coast road north of Lanno maybe as far as Jurien.

Sherbs and myself might take a drive Thursday and just stop where it looks fishy and throw some poppers slices ect.

Wondering if anyone wants to join us for a start ?

Then wondering if anyone has done it and has some tips they want to share?

Coral Bay Fishing Charters

Hi Guys,

I'm heading up to Coral Bay with the family in a couple of weeks time and have decided against towing my own boat up. I want to go out on a charter boat for a day trip and have seen that there is 2 companys that operate from there, Sea Force and Mahi Mahi 2. I just have to choose one!

Before I part with my hard-earned, I'd like to know if anybody has had any experience with either of the two. Hopefully someone can tell me they are both awesome.

Cheers

FeNaClNG Dampier Invitational

Any news. All I heard was a 260kg shark dragged in yesterday. No idea if true or on what class it was caught. Should have been in it?

Caught a 750mm cod on the squid jig!!!! Swallowed the whole thing!! Line was 2kg with a leader that was piss weak, just for squid. Dont know how the teeth didnt kill it, but it was a hoot.

Snapper / medium duty rod to suit Calcutta 400B?

G'day everyone,

Picked up a Shimano Calcutta 400B for a good price not long ago and want to get some suggestions on a rod to pair it with.

I have used the search function on the site but majority of guys are asking the question about rods to use for jigging.

I want to use the rod mainly for inshore snapper fishing. Or if the conditions are flat enough use it for some light duty bottom bouncing.

I have had a bit of a search on line through google and am still scratching my head as to what to buy.

I plan on loading the Calcutta with 20 - 25lb braid

Rod needs to have a trigger grip

would prefer something without cork grips

Budget is between $150 - $300

As mentioned before it is mainly going to be used as an inshore snapper rod more than anything, but with the posibility of some Barra or tuna action in the future.

At this stage i was thinking on some of the following rod options

Shimano Jewel 6 - 10kg

Daiwa Sealine X interline (not sure how this would go with casting though)

A pistol grip T Curve in the 6 - 10 kg range

if anyone has a better suggestion in that sort of price bracket i would really appreciate your input.

cheers

4WD north of 2 rocks

asked a mate  to assist me in a small job at Yanchep yesterday. Suggested afterwaerds to do some 4 w driving(expert)  through the tracks north of two rocks (I'm less than a newbie)

No probs finished the job and went to the entrance to the dunes at two rocks. 2 cop cars with at least 6 4WD's pulles up as they leave the dunes, trail bikes quads, all being checked. Even a flat bed towie turned up to take some vehicle away.

Bit concerned but mate said no problems just drive past them. Did and went along the track 5 mins later Chopper overhead just continued trying to negotiate the tracks, small bogs on a couple of occasions got out of them and over the tops after a couple of tries.

got to the ocean at last and what a mess- never so much weed and the beach was washed out at least half a meter down Surf was very rough

told Mike I didn't want to go back the way we came (my Vehicle is old - always pick a fault somewhere if they want to)

By the time we got out of the dunes we were nearly at Guilderton Still, learnt a bit about 4wd-ing and had some fun - even though I was 2 hours later than I told the missus

PE1 rod recommendation

Chasing a PE1 rod for casting small divers and soft plastics for smaller trevs, bonefish, triggerfish etc.

Been looking at a Golden Mean Green Arrow spinning, but keen to hear if anyone else has any other suggestions (especialy as this rod is shorter than what I am after).

Ideally after a 7ft 2 piece spin rod in the 2-4kg range. Would consider a 1 piece if it was 6'6", but any longer than that is a pain in the ass as a 1 piece. I have a Tierra at the moment, but I don't like it and that is the rod this would be replacing.

Will be matched up with a 2500 size reel (probably Stradic ci4).

Also considering an Evergreen Brushstinger, but don't want to spend a fortune on it and the evergreen is far more exxy than the Golden Mean.

my new 2 piece popper rod is stuck together - need advice

G'day guys,

I've got a bit of problem and hoping one of you will have the answer.

I've got my new 2 piece stick stuck together, I dont know if its a suction thing or just force. its a popping rod so the second piece goes into the butt.

Will putting protection like a towel over the graphite and then using some lock grips to give it a twist be OK?

any first hand advice would be great??

cheers

Marine Parks proposal-ACT NOW

Time is getting closer for the cutoff for fishers to put in a submission on the SW marine parks proposal.

I believe its 8th August, and the green mobs are driving hard for a huge expansion of what the Commonwealth has proposed.

I know Ive been a bit slow off the mark but after seeing the huge ad in the West, and looking at their Facebook page, I took the plunge and joined Recfishwest and followed their link to put in a proposal which I wrote myself rather than use their standard ones.

I havent joined Recfishwest before as being an ex professional fisho I have been in the firing line of both Recfishwest and Western Angler. And I know in those debates there was alot of uninformed and "misleading" info bandied around.

Looking at fishing forums showed that this stuff is quickly picked up and and bandied around as gospel, and had the desired effect in most cases. Some rec fishers thought it went the other way but anyhow...

HOWEVER-that was a debate between groups who both had knowledge and experience in one way or another of the ocean etc.

Now I see far worse and more misleading info being put forward.

Worse some of it is so laughable that we seafaring type people dismiss it as rediculous-but volumes of landlocked, city-locked people and those who feel the need of a cause DO believe it and take it up with a vengeance.

IT IS TIME FOR THOSE WHO HAVE NOT PUT IN A SUBMISSION OR JOINED RECFISHWEST TO DO IT NOW.

If Scott Coglan happens to read this post, he may recall that I wrote to him a couple of years back in response to a column of his where he suggested that it was time for commercial and Rec interests to fight together.

I told him that I thought it was too late for an olive branch and a bit rich to be suggesting that after all the water under the bridge.

I recant that now and believe he was seeing what I could not at the time.

So come on those of you too inert to bother cos "it wont make any difference" and "nobody listens" etc.

Use the shit weather and the money your saving on fuel right now to do a little to ensure your continued access to the ocean and right to put a feed on the table.

Fish Bats

Good Evening
Had a request to turn some devices for the purpose of subduing and / or despatching fish when brought into a boat against their will.
I tried a number of designs and timbers. These are approximately 400mm long and fisnished with Organ oil (coz I had it handy).

Almost wrong to use Sheoak and Jarrah, but they do look good. Most WA fish object to being clubbed with a lesser species of timber, only the best for them.

Oh, and the price I charge for each one, is a good feed of fish for the family.

Sincerely
Willy

record 2.4 metre albino catfish

This 2.4 metre albino catfish has netted a British angler a place in the record books.  The beast tipped the scales at 88 kilos.

Chris Grimmer, left, caught the biggest albino catfish ever landed by an angler on the the River Ebro, near Barcelona, Spain

Monster catch: Chris Grimmer, left, caught the biggest albino catfish ever landed by an angler on the the River Ebro, near Barcelona, Spain

It took 30 minutes to reel in the white catfish after it took his bait of halibut pellets.  The fish was so big that the angler's rod bent over double.   He described it as like 'trying to reel in a bus'.

Chris Grimmer shows off his 194lb catch before releasing it back into the River Ebro

Chris Grimmer shows off his 88kg catch before releasing it back into the River Ebro

The albino fish was returned to the water safe and well after being caught.

Ashley Scott, the guide from Catmaster Tours who organised the trip, said: 'We know what the records are for catfish so we realised straight away that it was a record.

Sheila Penfold, who is blind, caught the previous record 87.09kg albino catfish last October.

The biggest catfish ever caught in the world is a staggering 293kgs Giant Mekong Catfish caught in Thailand in 2005.

Stradic 5000 Whats your thoughts?

Hey folks,

Got the buying itch and have been thinking about the Shimano Stradic 5000 for a bit more serious LB SP and Lure flicking and occasional boat use.  Budgets tight, but from what I've read, good value for money reel.  Anything anyone whos owned / used these reels got to share, and best braid line option eg 20lb finns??

Pakulas Between the Lines DVD

Does anyone have a copy of Pakulas “Between the Lines” CD that theyd like to get rid of? Or know where to get one a bit cheaper than advertised?

Am keen to get hold of it, but cant really afford the big bucks they seem to go for at the moment.

Id be happy to pay a reasonable price for it 2nd hand (or even a copy of it….)

Also, in my online searches I read a couple of times that a second BTLs- “Revelations” apparently- is due for release soon? Anyone know what the differences between that and the original are? (is is an updated version of the original or something completely different?

Cheers in advance
