Star drag versus Lever drag
Submitted by Batty on Mon, 2011-08-15 19:36Was after some advice on the advantages/ disadvantages between star drag and lever drag for bottom bouncing, fairly new to all this and only have a cheap star drag and was looking at upgrading soon,
I've not used a lever drag before and wondered how quick you can put them into freespool and pay line out when you start to get a nibble, I find it better if a bite is developing not to let the lead move, seems to be alot more productive on hook ups
Any advice much appreciated

Simrad Chirp sounder
Submitted by obiwun32 on Mon, 2011-08-15 18:32I have just ordered the new Simrad BSM-2 and a Simrad NSE display to use with a chirp transducer, has anyone used the Simrad chirp gear yet and what transducer did you go for?
I am replacing one of the Raymarine C-series displays on my boat to install this new gear because I wasn't happy with the deep water performance of the 1kw DSM and transducer. I have tried both the airmar M260 and the Airmar TM260 transducers and my bottom reading falls apart at about 200m. I am hoping that the new Chirp technology will help me get good readings in 2-400m but I don't know if i will have to step up to the Airmar R299 2-3kw chirp transducer. Does anyone have experience with the Airmar M265 chirp or the TM265 chirp transducers?
Cheers
Toby

It was a 100L marble finish, 600mm x 600mm x 1200 (the mackeral box) purchased from dave at extreme coolers.
Absolutely gutted today when I found out.I have only had a couple of fish in it so it looks new.If anyone found it could they please pm me

Fishing at Denham
Submitted by plugger on Mon, 2011-08-15 17:05Coming to Shark Bay next week with my boat, first time there, just wondering if anyone has been fishing there lately? Would like to go to Steep Point and Turtle Bay trolling and also do a bit of bottom bouncing. Lots of deep sea fishing experience on the south coast but none up north (as yet) staying for a week, any suggestions? Cheers Plugger

Today's Weather
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Mon, 2011-08-15 16:33I've been siiting outside under cover at Carramar watching this massive blow. It was a concern that some property damage could happen. Fortunatly not but the pool is full and palm debris is all over the place.
Looking at BOM it seems the worst was south of the river. Any damage reports? Fishing plan later in the week needs reassessing as it seems we have some pretty big seas happening.

Sounder advice
Submitted by Fraser 5.25 on Mon, 2011-08-15 15:06Hi all,
I've got an Lowrance Elite 5 sounder/chart plotter combo and I was making my way back to the boat ramp the other day. Half way across the Cockburn Sound, it was 20 metres deep and I noticed arches on the sounder 2 metres off the sea floor. I would have been close to the middle of the sound at the time. I thought that they were fish arches so I dropped down a line and nothing was biting. The water wasn't the clearest but I wouldn't have thought that settlement in the water would have given off the arches on the sounder like it did but as I have only just bought the unit, I am unsure. When I first installed the transducer, I used to get a shadow echo but I have adjusted the angle of the dangle and no longer get the shadow echo.
Just wondering if anyone could clarify this for me if it's just false echoes off the bottom or what?
Cheers,
Ken

Bushmans Trailer Repair
Submitted by madfisher on Mon, 2011-08-15 10:40Headed out off Freo Friday for a session on the 6lb gear on Skippy and had a good night landing fish up to 45cm.
But had a bit of drama heading home. As we pulled up to the intersection of Preston Point Rd and Canning Highway we heared this almighty scraping noise. So we promptly stopped and jumped out to discover the draw bar had rusted through and was dragging along the ground. Well at first we thought of several options to repair it to get home but then using the timber my mate had in his ute we went with the bush mechanics option, it doesn't look much but it far exceeded our expectations we got from Bicton to Bayswater (home) without a hitch.

talking about sharks..
Submitted by bod on Mon, 2011-08-15 01:19WA shark chaser nominated for Emmy

WA cameraman Matt Hawksworth has been nominated for an Emmy. Picture credit: Matt Hawksworth

WA cameraman Matt Hawksworth received an Emmy nomination for his work on the Discovery Channel documentary Ultimate Air Jaws.
A WA cameraman, who has spent most of his life chasing sharks, has been nominated for an Emmy.
Matt Hawksworth, 31, received the prestigious nod for his work on the Discovery Channel documentary, Ultimate Air Jaws.
The one-hour program was filmed off the coast of South Africa and captures some of the most exciting footage of great white sharks as they burst out of the water to attack their prey.
Matt, who has been obsessed with the deadly predators since he was a child, said he still can’t believe he has been nominated.
“I am still pretty shocked by the whole thing,” he told PerthNow. “I have been working and filming sharks for a long time now and to finally be recognised is great.
“I have done all sorts of things in the film industry, from acting to camera work, and have always been trying to find opportunities so it’s nice that something has finally come out of it.”
The 31-year-old has spent almost decade travelling back and forth between Perth and South Africa filming great whites for a South African marine research project.
Each year he would film his own footage while helping out with other documentaries.
Then in 2009 his received his big break.
“Basically I had been working on the boats wrangling sharks for other documentaries, while also filming my own stuff,” he said. “Then one year the Discovery Channel came out and I got to get involved.
“The way it turned out was that whenever they missed a shot, I managed to catch it with my some what cheaper equipment and they wanted to use it.
“So basically they started letting me shoot with their cameras and I ended up being a cameraman for their documentary, Ultimate Air Jaws.”
Matt said he was just pleased they had used his work and never expected to be nominated for an Emmy.
He is one of five cameramen who worked on the project which is nominated in the Outstanding Cinematography – Nature category of the 32nd Annual Emmy Award for News and Documentary.
He is now hoping that he will be able to make it over for the ceremony which is being held at the Lincoln Centre in New York on September 26.

ROD TO SUIT AVET SX 2SPD
Submitted by Septimus on Sun, 2011-08-14 22:07Can anyone recommend a nice rod to suit an AVET SX 2 speed overhead reel that's loaded up with ~40lbs braid?
Looking to use it bottom bouncing for dhuies, etc. in 40~60m and would prefer a quality, lighter rod with a "parabolic" action under load, rather than a "broomstick" - any suggestions by the knowledgable members on this site would be welcome?

Advice on 2000 size reel options..
Submitted by PattyT on Sun, 2011-08-14 17:06Hey guys, looking at getting a 2000 sized Daiwa reel in the next few weeks. Just wondering what the best options are at the moment. Will be used for freshwater, Bream and the up coming snapper season. The ones iv been having a close look at are the Sol, Caldia, Tierra or the Advantage. Just wondering if anyone has any feedback on these? Also I'll be after a matching rod so any advice on that would be great to.
Thanks in advance.

Boat stacking
Submitted by Anthony Hall 87 on Sat, 2011-08-13 18:29Gents,
I have been considering for quite a while getting a bigger boat (probably a bit down the track), but the idea of having to have the cost of a pen doesn't really excite me too much. I have been looking into boat stacking a bit and was wondering who you guys use and the costs that are involved.
Looks like it could be costly but thought it might be a better alternative to a pen.
Cheers.
