$25 million boat harbour for Augusta
Submitted by bod on Sun, 2011-08-07 21:13$25million boat harbour to be built in Augusta
Premier Colin Barnett said the harbour, to be built at Flat Rock in Flinders Bay, would provide much-needed, safe direct ocean access for recreational and commercial craft between Busselton and Albany.
“The harbour will service the region's commercial and tourism fleets while providing a regional and State destination point for the ever increasing recreational boating sector,” Mr Barnett said.
"There is an urgent need for a sheltered harbour at Augusta as navigation of the shallow ocean entrance to the commercial boating facility in the Blackwood River is increasingly difficult and prevailing winds and strong ocean currents make launching from the coast unsafe.”
The project, funded through the Royalties for Regions program, includes the construction of two breakwaters to create a protected harbour basin featuring four boat launching ramps, boat holding jetties, a fixed 40-metre service jetty and associated facilities including at least 160 car/trailer parking bays and 90 car-only parking bays.
Further stages of development may include the provision of up to 50 boat pens and commercial development opportunities.
The Premier said the project would provide flow-on benefits to local community.
“This is great news for local business operators and the general Augusta community, Mr Barnett said.
“The new harbour is of particular importance to the existing whale watching and fishing industries, which are currently limited by lack of access to safe landing jetties.
"The project delivers on the State Government's commitment to provide improved boating infrastructure throughout Western Australia.”
In the 2011-12 State Budget, $68million was allocated to enhance recreational boating facilities across regional WA.
“I’d also like to commend the Shire of Augusta-Margaret River for its work in ensuring the success of this project,” the Premier said.

Busso mulloway help
Submitted by danno on Sun, 2011-08-07 14:55Hey all.
Im heading down to busso again in a few weeks and i plan on trying to catch a mulloway off the jetty. I have two combos that i might use they are a TLD 20 with 30lb mono and a Stradic 8000fi with 10kg mono on a jigwrex PE4. They are a bit on the light side but do you think that they will be able to stop a mulloway? And what lb leader do you use? i've got 40,60,80,120lb leaders im thinking of using the heavier one tho.
Also how do you guys land them on the jetty? Which would be a better option for solo night fishing a Flying gaff or a long gaff?
Cheers danno

Anyone for Dancing Squid?
Submitted by bod on Sun, 2011-08-07 00:58Diners in Japan looking for a moving experience over dinner can now order a squid that dances off their plate.
A restaurant has created a dish, named Odori don - literally meaning dancing squid rice bowl - by adding soy sauce to a fresh squid.
The high salt content in the sauce reacts with ions in cells of the squids' tentacles creating voltage differences, and making the squid move.
To prepare the dish, chefs at Ikkatei Tabiji, in Hakodate, Japan, first remove the head of the squid before serving the body, with tentacles intact, over a bowl of sushi rice.
Seasoned soy sauce is then poured over it.
As the squid is served so fresh, when the sauce is added, signals across nerve cell membranes are re-activated temporarily, making it 'come back to life'
Dancing juice: The squid is placed on a bed of rice before soy sauce is added
Itchy feet: The squid appears to get up and start moving out of the bowl
The meal, which is proving popular with diners, costs around $25 per person
Staying alive: The squid is now in full swing and looks as if it's dancing
The dish is such a success that the restaurant have patented the name of the creation.
Now other restaurants in the area have begun making their own versions of the Hakodate dish, under different names.
Edit: There's a (rather unappealing) video at the end of this link if you feel so inclined.

Anaconda sale on Mojiko fishing gear
Submitted by Stuey on Sat, 2011-08-06 12:56Hi guys,
Yeah, I know it's not big news, but Anaconda has a 60% off sale on all Mojiko gear this weekend. Most of it is shite, but for those looking for a cheap graphite rod, the Mojiko Plastix 1-3kg 7' 2" is pretty good, and the Surf Cannons look pretty good too, for less than half price. Haven't used the Cannons, but I have the Plastix and it's quite nice; Fuji single foot guides and reel seat. Finish is a bit ordinary, but performance OK. 60% off would be around $20-$25 I think.
Just a heads up for those who can't afford big brands. I have nothing to do with Anaconda.
Cheers
Stu

Livebaiting With A Jigging Rod?
Submitted by symetre on Sat, 2011-08-06 11:59Curious to know if anyone is using their jigging rod to livebait with?
I know people use 50lb jigging rods such as the 6ft 3" Hiramasa's for livebaits but im curious to know if a shorter 80lb jig stick such as the 5ft 6" Monster Mesh Max or Catalinas could double as a livie stick?
Ive seen a few shows lately where people are using short Shimano Jigwrex's on bluefin tuna... so wondering if the same theory could apply to livebaiting kings.
Ive got a heavy overhead combo as my go-to livie setup, but considering doubling a jigging combo as a backup.
The reel will likely be a Saragosa 18,000 running 80lb.
Any thoughts?

May/june Broome report
Submitted by Freshsquidmarks on Sat, 2011-08-06 00:00This is well overdue, but i guess better late than never! haha
I flew up to broome at the end of may with three full weeks ahead of me solely dedicated to fishing from sunrise to sunset! Well at least i thought so, then....... My parents who are up there half the year needed help fixing their boat, wanted to spend time doing a few other things and so on, fair enough
and then my partner wanted to come up for 5 days and then my brother and then me scaily mates haha so was cut a bit shorter but was stoked to have them all up with us.... My parents are grey nomads that are fortunate enough to live up there for 5 months of every year, and a massive thankyou should be extended to them for letting me crash on their site use their boat and their 4wd.
Well the plan was to grab the new 19ft centre console and bang out to disaster reef to chase some Gts.... but as plans so often dont work out after 12months of "planning" the motor was playing up so i spent a few days fixing eletrics and just generally tidying up the boat for my parents while we were trying to fix the engine.
I was stuck to landbased for the first week, which was fine!
Hit the jetty a few times during different tides (low, high, the change etc) with smaller reefies half way up juvenille blue lined, coral trout, potato cod and heaps more was great to see so many fish! at the end of the jetty we targeted golden trevs and queenies which were great fun on light gear!! but then there were the unstoppables which bricked me in an instant, i can only assume big trevally or resident cod! Being stubborn i went back the next day armed with heavier gear to catch the infamous unknown that bricked me twice. Gathered some livies and sent my line out... first hook up was a couta pulled him to the surface and cut him off... then it happened, big hookup again... bricked in the pylons and again and again! i excepted defeat.
Me and my dad went out to a local creek on low tide to try our luck at mud crabbing with the sheperds hooks within an hour we had two muddies, stoked! my first mud crabs... that will do us for dinner!
While my girlfriend was up we headed to willie creek on the start of the incoming tide with our light gear and initially it was quiet just the usual juvenilles and then bang! girlfriend had a big bite with a blistering run that pulled the hook... unfortanately i think it mite have been the threadie i had so badly been hoping for. Then a school of big diamond trevally came through with both of hooking up and landing multiple fish which are so much fun in shallow water and i personally like on the tooth when fresh!
with the boat still not working and desperate to get her onto some reefies we hired a small boat from boab boat hire and headed no more than 2kms out bashing some reef in about 30mt of water, was very quiet with only a couple of undersize snapper and a couple of trevally and a heap of bloody monkey fish and cod! but was beautiful out none the less. Couple of hours before we had to head in we moved right in close and got a heap of spanish flag and golden trevally.
Had a few days relaxing by the beach, dinners and a bit of diving and my partner left. I hit the jetty a few more times chasing the golden trevally which was a ball!
A few days later i caught up with a friend of a mate that lives up in Broome, Gary Shrugg who was an absolute legend who invited me over, taught me how to throw a throw net which i later found out i wasnt the first and probably
wont be the last, he and his partner aslo offered me use of their dingy and really sent me in right direction even with a few points! i really cant thank him enough!
Finally got our boat running but unfortunately just not reliable enough to go out wide so we were limited to only bout 5kms... the next few days were spent catching Bluebone, snapper, trevally and cod.
Then my brother and mate flew up and were warned the activities will include fishing, fishing, fishing and drinking! they happily obliged. We spent a few days about 5kms out bottom bashing on spring tides which didnt make it easy but we ended up doing really well all catching big bluebone, catfish, tuna, painted sweetlips, fingermark, bluelined emporer and school mackeral. keeping what we could eat fresh and a bit for a few of the oldy's in the park without boats.
Next mission was to try and troll for some spanish mackeral. We really wanted to go up to barred creek as the mackeral and sailies were absolutely firing but allas the dodgy motor we barely went passed cable beach. We trolled for about two hours without any luck. Running a spread of shallow, mid and deep diving minnows and a home made teaser on a small drop off i had nearly given up hope of ever getting a spanish mack and tehn my rod went off! given it was nearly in free spool
and we were drifting towards it it didnt even realize it was hooked until it got to the boat stiil green it went ballistic as i ran around the boat chasing it while bucky and my bro pulled rods out the way, and lures out of my feet! finally it was boat side, shit! no net or gaff i wasnt going to lose it so i jumped in the water and passed it up as the boys grabbed it.... cheers lads!! i was so stoked with our group effort mackie and still smile thinking bout it!
At this stage, the boys had left and i had ticked a few fish off my wish list. The wind had turned for the worse and managed to catch up with a fellow fishwrecked member Patty and his mate. The lads picked me up in their hire car and we headed up to willie creek again land based. these guys were top blokes and we spent the bext few hours spinning fishy yarns and having a laugh, catching juvies, Patt dropped a diamond trev right at the rocks on placcy and then started to catch bream, flathead and all the fish i could catch in bloody perth! so we hit the road... can i just say was brilliant to catch up with a couple of really easy going guys, complete randoms, but fellow fishos and have a cracking time! thats what this site is all about and would encourage everyone to do the same is always rewarding!
well it was coming to and end for me but i had a window of good weather on my last day so went out with mum and dad to try the creek... doesnt always produce but is always so peaceful there! spent a few hours there trolling, throwing into snags and drifting but we were there on the wrong tides. So we squirted over to the cyclone moorings to try for some triple tail... no joy! then we thought we would try a jew hole i had nearby. First couple of drifts over it nothing then i hooked up a blue nosed salmon and a grunter! neither of which i had caught before so another couple of fish ticked off and then mum hooked up on a small jewie and that was it another great day in broome and the end of my trip!
Unfortunately i couldnt go to half the spots i had hoped with the boat being unreliable but caught a heap of fish, met some great people and had an awsome time :) Ive included some of my favourite pics and different fish species caught.
Apologies for the massive report will try to keep it to the point next time :) finally a massive thanks to my parents who made it possible, Gary Shrugg for all your help, Patty for catching up for a fish and Marky from broome who gave me a heap of advice on fishing broome even offering to take me out, its people like you that really make others holidays unforgetable... Cheers all see you out there!

500ks later
Submitted by GrahamM on Fri, 2011-08-05 09:44Well Sherbs and myself thought we would head a bit further north looking for some new ground. We headed up the Indian Ocean Drive from Lancelin to Jurien Bay and planned to fish any fishy looking spots on the way. I was wrong when i thought that there was lots of reefy spots close to the road, that must but further north of Jurien where the road all but meets the beach and reefs. Bugger.
The first time we got the rods out after checking out the surrounds was Grey. We drove around and along the beach and this looked the goods. We threw a few different poppers and even some baits but nothing in reply. It was about 3 to 4 m down to the water.
Next we drove towards Jurien and looked at all the tracks we could along the way even Kangaroo point but still not what we were looking for for a fish. We drove around at Cervantes and it looked like a big bay and nothing exciting.
We kept going to Jurien and checked out a couple of spots we had been told about but the directions sucked and we couldnt find either spot off the directions we were given.
So again we drove around looking for somewhere to fish and ended up driving south of Jurien along a track and the beach where some reef met the beach so this will do and we (I, Sherbs caught nothing Haha ) caught 2 little fish ( they are sitting on an upside down Bucket ) a Flatty and a reef fish that was it. It was now dark so we decided to head home.
Next time i think i will head north of Jurien and look at the spots you can see from the HWY (not like i thought they are north of Jurien and NOT just north of Lancelin my bad sorry) and try again but in the near future i think i will stick to the tried and proven spots alot closer to home. All in all it was a nice day driving with a bit of fishing thrown in and bugger all fish for the 500ks covered but at least we werent working. thanks Sherbs for the company.

Filling in my Pool
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Fri, 2011-08-05 09:31Not that fishie but thought I might seeks some advice/opinions.
I have a very nice pool in the back yard but it hardly gets used and I spend way too much time keeping it maintained. A large batch of surrounding palms continually pollute the pool so we are thinking that maybe we should fill it in. The palms are too big for an old bloke like me to tackle and the cost of clearing them is quite high.
Has anyone done this? Does anyone know of a good designer who can sketch out a plan? Basically, my idea is to leave the pool in the ground and turn it into a landscape with a water feature or something like that.
Cheers,

Head going all soft and sticky. My first thought was fuel or similar but no other signs on the others. Mono leader and heatshrink over hook rig was fine. Any thoughts?

Holiday up north advice please
Submitted by whipasswaverunner on Wed, 2011-08-03 22:28Hi all, we have made a last minute decision to go on a camping holiday up North in a weeks time, for 3 weeks. I won't be towing the boat, but taking a camping trailer. I have never been higher than Kalbarri so this trip will be all new to me. We hope to go from Perth, thru to Newman, Karijini, Millstream, Point Samson, Exmouth, Canarvon, and stops along the way back to Perth. I hope to do some fishing landbased, nothing to serious, just some light gear fun. What would I need to buy and take in regards to lures and tackle. I have a couple of 6 ft light gear rods with aprox 15 pound braid. Also where could I try to do some fishing in the areas along the coast from Point samson down back to perth, places where I can park the car with the camper trailer, let the kids have some fun in the sand/dirt, missus can read a book in a chair while I can flick some lures around? And if anyone has any advice for the trip, whatever it may be, maybe awesome places to see, or not to see, don't hesitate to let me know, as I have never been up there before. Thanks in advance.
