Perth's near-shore fishing future to be researched
Submitted by bod on Sun, 2009-12-27 10:14A $300,000 program to improve the scientific knowledge of fishing off Perth coast was announced this morning.
Scarborough MLA Liza Harvey, on behalf of Fisheries Minister Norman Moore, today launched the research strategy to assess the impact of Perth's growing population on local fisheries.
"We need to fill in the gaps in our knowledge about the shore-based fishing effort along Perth's coast," Mrs Harvey said. "Recent changes to recreational fishing arrangements means that fishers are likely to stop fishing as much for species like dhufish, groper and pink snapper and target species like herring, whiting and tailor more heavily."This could put increased pressure on these types of near-shore fish that are so attractive to the occasional fishing public, including parents with young children.
"We need to ensure we have as much knowledge as possible about these fisheries so we can protect and manage them for future generations."Mrs Harvey said Department of Fisheries supervising scientist Dan Gaughan would oversee the project which would use modern technology to assess the most cost-effective options for ongoing surveys of near-shore fishing.
"Many of the near-shore fish communities between Two Rocks and Mandurah are targeted by boat-based and shore-based fishers, but there is a lack of good data on the shore-based catch of recreational fishers," she said.Dr Gaughan said the new project was additional to $660,000 funding announced in July to boost research on coastal finfish by assessing the stock status of herring, tailor, whiting and other species. The latest funding is part of $2.235million to support effectively-directed fisheries research.
"Aerial and camera surveys will be compared with the use of standard roving surveys of beach-based fishing, to determine which combination of methods provides the best strategy for future surveys of recreational anglers," Dr Gaughan said."About 80 per cent of WA's recreational fishing effort occurs in the West Coast bioregion and it is well understood that the majority of this effort is focused on the Perth metropolitan area.
"This NRM research will help us learn how we can cost-effectively measure the catch of shore-based fishers to help ensure it can be managed in a sustainable way.- 5 comments

New to boating and divers
Submitted by mejutty on Sat, 2009-12-26 10:42New to boating and divers.
I am a new boat owner having taken my boat out 3 times since I Have had it so most of what I do/come across is new. Left out of hilaries yesterday and head up north to then go out deep (having someone show me the reef gap before I start using it) and just north of little island as you get out over the reef line, there were 2 boats. 1 Boat had its dive flag up the other had no flags up and they were about 200-300 metres apart. The boat with no flags obvioulsy had divers below either that or they realised they had left something back in the car and swam back to shore to get it as there was no one on the boat.
As I kept about 100 metres from either boat I still slowed down due to this is new thing and lo and behold a diver scares the crap out of me by surfacing about 20 metres away from me, much further than 50 metres from either boat. At first I thought I was reading my gps wrong and I was about to run aground on reef. thought it was a reef break but no further inspection revealed the goggles etc etc. Now is this a normal occurrence that divers stray and surface more than 50 metres from their boats and some don't put up their flags??
Fishing was fishing, caught 3 whiting and hooked a shark that busted me off and then proceeded to launch itself about 2 metres in the air 20m from the boat, did this about 7 times quite spectacular actually.

crab nets in the mindarie marina
Submitted by tdog65000 on Thu, 2009-12-24 23:19saw some young blokes dropping crab nets from the jetty on the pub car park side. theyd got four good ones in the half hour i was there. is this common practice in the marina and is it allowed? if so, can they be caught anywhere in the marina? seems like a great idea to have some pots out while your fishing from the rocks or jetties

are you allowed to spearfish about 500m S of little island? Regulations said no collecting of fish in sancyuarys Inside Marmion Marine Park. Also i heard something that you had to be 1800m off the land before u can spearfish i measured on google Earth and it said it was around 2000m. so yeah just anywhere close to the island.

One more sleep
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Thu, 2009-12-24 17:06OK I am an old bugger now so the others tell me. It still doesn't stop me from getting a little excited about Xmas. There are a few goodies under that tree that I will still be wanting to open in the early hours of the morning. This Xmas is pretty quiet so Wendy and I will most likely have an early drink.. A nanna nap and then up and about for the kids to come over for dinner. I am the chef again (but I like and choose that).
Merry Xmas to the lot of you. Be safe and sensible and ENJOY!

fishing etiquette
Submitted by tdog65000 on Thu, 2009-12-24 10:52when your fishing from jetties or rocks with plenty of available fishing spots all around you and someone sets up right next to you, close enough to invade your space, is this just part and parcel of fishing, or do you have every right to tell them to f*** off out of your face? sometimes the solitude is what your after and unless your vying for space, which i could understand, i felt it was very rude. Is it just me or do most fisherman feel this way? very interested to hear your feedback

how shit.
Submitted by scotto on Thu, 2009-12-24 08:39The missus thought she did something good for my xmas present last year, and bought me a 12 month subscription to Fishing WA magazine.
i just gotta say, that thank christ its finished.
this would have to be the worst publication circulating in the world today. not only do the things arrive 3 weeks late every month (got december edition yesterday), but i am so sick of seeing the same picture 4, 5, or even 6 times in the same edition (the cover shot is shown 4 times half page each time). posing with the same fish for 12 shots, doesnt mean you should run them all.
without fail, there is an exmouth trip where some bogan catches a trevally, or an "expos'e" on metro squid or herring. even worse, is when someone flukes a good fish, and writes an article on it, again with repetetive pictures.
the idiots have done an article in this months edition on how to catch abalone, 2 weeks after the season has already closed! seriously this is bad form. imagine some young kids reading it, going to catch some, and gettin busted by fisheries. really, really bad form.
admittingly, i was a member of the fwa forum for a while, and went to write this on their forum, but when i went to log in, my membership had expired (probably been 12 months since i was last there). i went to sign back up, and they want to charge me $49.95 for that!!! get stuffed!!! seriously, who would actually pay the $6.95 asking price for their magazine anyway? if thats what they're charging, then adam should start publishing his reel time magazine. he'll become a millionaire.
basically, i just wanted to vent my frustration at those money hungry fwa retards, and expose it for what it really is - a repetetive, uninteresting, misinforming waste of paper, designed for bum hole fisherman that dont know any better.
comments please....

Hillaries Marina Today
Submitted by UncutTriggerInWA on Wed, 2009-12-23 21:29UncleStu and I couldn't get a line in the water this morning despite taking off from my place at 3:30am. So.. we did some sussing out and came home and I decided to go back to bed for a while.
Awake and an empty house.. OK so what to do? OK so let's see what the north wall of Hillaries can do as the wind is just friggin howling SW. It turned out to be a very relaxing day with lots of terrorists ( tourists) around. I ended up with about 1/2 dozen decent skippy, threw back a number or Tarwine and a few baby pinkies. It was fun. I can't wait for Xmas so I can christen my new ultra-lite gear. The skippy at Hillaries certainly make you work to avoid the structure.

Sambo Jigging with SWC
Submitted by Ectopic on Wed, 2009-12-23 20:17Just got off the phone with Craig to book a group of my friends on Tuesday.
Apparently he's had a last minute cancellation for tomorrow (Thurs), so he's got spots if anyone is keen to go for a jig. Weather is showing moderate to low winds and waves of 1.8m, I'd go if I didn't have to work :(
