Reward to catch youths who hit dolphin
Submitted by bod on Thu, 2009-12-17 13:01Reward to catch youths who hit dolphin
AAP
December 17, 2009, 5:14 am
Environmentalists have
described as "sick" a group of teens who attacked Moko the friendly
Kiwi dolphin. They have offered a $NZ500 reward for
information leading to their identification.
The youths punched and hit Moko, Gisborne's famous bottlenose dolphin, last week.
"Your
help is needed to find these youths, who have a sick taste in fun," Sea
Shepherd Conservation Society New Zealand's Michael May, who has
offered the reward, told The Gisborne Herald.
The Department of Conservation (DOC) says it will prosecute the group of youths seen attacking Moko if it catches them.
The punching incident was reported at Waikanae Beach last week.
DOC's Jamie Quirk said it was "unacceptable" for anyone to attack Moko.
"If we can get evidence we would look to prosecute people but without evidence our hands are tied."
The Marine Animals Protection Act carries a fine of up to $NZ30,000 ($A23,900) for cruelty offences.

Mako Fishing Ban
Submitted by GusG on Thu, 2009-12-17 09:24I am fairly disappointed and somewhat p*ssed off with this mako ban given that I dont think the ban here will do anything to help the mediterranean makos so I have decided to write to Peter Garrett on the matter. I have tried to stay away from abusing anyone, telling them that I will not vote for them or any such thing. I think that sort of carry on does not help the issue. What do you think?
Dear Mr Garrett,
I write to you to express my concern at the Government’s proposal to ban the targeting and capture of short finned mako sharks. I understand and commend the Government on its stance to protect endangered species and the signing of the UN Sponsored Convention on Migratory Species, but I believe that each individual issue needs to be assessed on its own merits and not covered by a blanket ban.
Dr Julian Pepperell – a very highly respected fisheries scientist specializing in large open water fish – has claimed the ban as “mystifying – there is no biological sense to it. There is no evidence of any connection between the population of makos in the Mediterranean and the short finned makos off the Australian coast”
I understand that one of your spokesmen stated that the ban would take place from the end of January 2010 but could not explain how the Australian ban would aid the Mediterranean mako sharks.
It appears to me that perhaps we are ‘jumping on the band wagon’ to be seen to be protecting endangered species and be seen as a good global environmental citizen. May I suggest that with a bit more research and time taken to consider the finding we can focus our efforts on schemes that will actually have the desired effect on the targeted species.
I am a resident of Victoria and mako sharks are one of a very limited number of species that game fishermen can target here during a certain time of the year. These fishermen spend considerable amounts of money which benefit a number of industries including tourism, fishing tackle and boating. These people will not go out fishing if their sole quarry is not able to be caught and all of these industries will suffer as a result.
I am a very responsible angler and have always observed size limits, bag limits and have where possible try to educate others on the values of maintaining a sustainable fishery. I am also an advocate of catch and release fishing. I am a member of a number of organizations such as ANSA (Australian National Sportfishing Association) and ALBAA (Australian Land Based Anglers Association - http://www.albaa.com.au) who also are very focused on sustainable fisheries and environmental protection. ALBAA is an association with the interests of anglers, fisheries and the environment as their main focus. They have run numerous ‘Ledge Care’ events which focus on cleaning and maintaining popular fishing locations.
I am also sending copies of this letter to the shadow minister the Hon. Greg Hunt, MP, the Victorian premier John Brumby and I am also sharing this letter with a number of fishing forums where discussion on the topic has been quite intense and the results of the ban are being discussed passionately.
I implore you to reconsider the proposed ban on mako sharks until you have a chance to fully understand the impacts of such a ban and indeed the lack of effect it will have on trying to resolve the issues faced in the Mediterranean.
This is an issue which affects me personally and both the issue itself but also the way it was handled will enter my consideration next time I head to a ballot box. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the issue.

giant lobster caught
Submitted by bod on Wed, 2009-12-16 22:47Fisherman claims monster lobster is biggest caught in British waters for 80 years... even though he didn't bother weighing it
By Daily Mail Reporter 15th December 2009
This photo of probably the biggest lobster netted in British waters for 80 years is the only proof of the catch.Simon Sharp threw the barnacled female measuring more than 1m long back into the sea after snapping it on his mobile phone. It was slow and sluggish and he did not want to risk its life by taking it to shore to be weighed and verified.
Experts say its huge claws - said to measure 35cm long and 15cm wide - could take off a human hand.
Shell-shocked! Lizzy Sharp holds the giant lobster she and her husband Simon caught off the coast of Devon
The monster crustacean was more than 3ft long and had claws measuring 14in long and 8in wide
The Sharps were fishing when they noticed the lobster, believed to be more than 100 years old, caught up in their net off the coast of Dartmouth in Devon.
But the photographic evidence did little to support Mr Sharp's case. Three years ago a 16 year old teenager fishing off a pier in Deal Kent, hauled out a monster which looks much bigger than Mr Sharp's catch.
Louie Smith, 16, who caught a giant lobster weighing 11lb 3oz off Deal pier, Kent on Sunday June 18, 2006
Simon 'V-notched' the creature's tail so it would be illegal for other fisherman to take it again.
A spokeswoman from the Marine Conservation Society said: 'This is a massive lobster and one of this size is likely to be well over a century old.
'It has probably just found a really good sheltered spot in the estuary and it's definitely the biggest one we've heard of in this country, if not further afield.
'It's really good that they put it back in, because the older lobsters are really important to the breeding stock, as they actually put more energy into reproduction as they get older, and it's good to keep them going as lobsters are often over-fished.'
The biggest lobster ever recorded weighed in at 44 pounds and was 1.06 metres long and was caught off the coast of Canada in 1977.
Europe's biggest ever lobster, caught off Fowey in Cornwall in 1931, weighed 20lb and measured just over four feet.
In 2001, a huge lobster was spared the pot after being caught off Cornwall. It measured three feet.

Kalbarri Kapers
Submitted by Colin Hay on Wed, 2009-12-16 18:15You have got to love Kalbarri.
I had only been in town for a few hours and my old mate Tackleshack Doug took me down to one of his local spots - right in the heart of town - and with only my second cast I landed a beautiful 45 cm Black Bream.

A beautiful, solid fish, I would hate to guess how old it was - so it was really good to see it swim back into its haunt after a quick picture.
I followed that up with a nice 60 cm flathead not long after and I was quickly remembering why I love Kalbarri so much.
So many great fish within walking distance - and not a blowie to be seen.
The next morning Doug and I hit Wittecarra Beach to see how the tailor action was shaping up. The weather gods were certainly smiling on us as you couldn't have asked for better conditions - with a slight offshore wind and a low swell making fishing very comfortable.

We arrived to find a few anglers already into it (thanks to me not setting my alarm clock right), but it didn't take long for us to find a good looking spot and start hooking into the fish.

As it can be with tailor fishing, the schools were moving up the beach and there would be the odd quiet period, but you soon knew the fish were back when rod after rod starting buckling over.
We hadn't been there long when I had a great hit and what was obviously a good fish started heading north, giving my 4500H Saltish spin a good test. While I was fighting the fish I noticed that it suddenly seemed a bit panicked and was racing for the beach and I soon saw why when a huge black seal came tearing through the water.
Thankfully the high retrieve rate of the Saltist, combined with the tailor's desire to get away from the black monster soon had him in the wash and on the beach. And I knew straight away I had achieved one of my targets for that trip - a big solid 60 cm plus tailor.

While he just passed the mark at 61 cm, he was super thick through the body as you can see in this picture where it is on a plate next to a pair of 40 cm plus fish.

I think Doug and I managed about 20 odd tailor between us that morning (we returned most of them) - in about 2 hours. Most of the fish were 35 cm plus and quite a few were in the high 40s.
In between fishing, my youngest daughter and I did the Kalbarri holiday things.
She had a great horse ride and we visited the Rainbow Jungle bird park and the coastal cliffs.

I even managed to talk Rebecca into getting up at 4.30 am to come fishing with us. And she had a ball landing seven nice tailor.

In fact the whole fishing experience was fantastic.
Some of my highlights would have been Doug's 66cm cobia. A rare catch from the beach.

The incredibly consistent size of the fish and the regularity of the fishing action.
Below are a few more fishing pics.

Many thanks to Doug and his wife Deb for being great hosts.
My aplogies to Mick, who I said I would catch up with but I lost his number.
And I can't wait to get back there again.

tolerance/respect
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Wed, 2009-12-16 14:25Well, since it is nearly Christmas time, and with getting a bit fed up over the tone of some of the posts on here, I would like to put out a call for some tolerance and respect for your fellow members/human beings.
We have some great debates going on this forum and while thats a good thing, I think people should remember that others are free to express their point of view (even if they are playing the devils advocate). In recent weeks I can think of a fair few shots below the belt by people straight off the bat stating that other fisherpeople (even site members) will just not bother abiding with the new fishing rules and regulations and even a sickening post where someone was asking for information about a product, only to be called a homosexual for wanting to use a product designed for safety.
Just keep in mind that its easier not to post, than to write a flame - You know the old "If you have nothing nice to say, then dont say anything at all" and if you arent going to put up anything useful then at least hold back on immature sledging. I mean, I could go on for days about the shitty punctuation, grammar, spelling, negative attitude and just downright lack of respect of some users but at the end of the day its just a forum about fishing and I dont care enough.
Personally I think Fishwrecked.com is an excellent resource and I thank Adam and all the other moderators, contributors and site sponsors for giving me the opportunity to discuss fishing in this great southern land with a bunch of likeminded individuals.
Everyone have a Merry Christmas/New Years - But stay safe, and remember treat other people in the way you would expect to be treated.

Humminbird transducer wanted
Submitted by makai on Tue, 2009-12-15 16:45I am chasing a transducer for a Humminbird PirhanaMax 220 sounder. I would prefer a dead one that I can cut the plug off and splice to the transducer I have (which is missing its plug), but a functioning transducer would be fine too.
The transducer for the PirahnaMax 220 fits many other Humminbird models, so if you have any old Humminbird transducers laying around I would be keen to talk to you.
PM me or phone me on 0413 032 654 if you can help.
Cheers, Peter

handline fishing quinns rocks
Submitted by tdog65000 on Tue, 2009-12-15 09:56hi havnt fished here yet but have been living in ridgewood for a couple of years and im very close to the quinns rocks area and have recently been put on a white meat only diet and need to catch some fish. i grew up in broome and either fished from the beach with a handline for salmon or shark, or from the rocks with a handline for bluebone, snapper and other reefies so im looking for info regarding handline fishing from the beach in the quinns area. im quite familiar with any tackle that ill need but really need help as far as tides, bait and what i should be targeting at this time of year. im more used to using heavier handlines(75 lbs and up) but if i have to target smaller fish i can easily adapt. appreciate any help and look forward to replies

New Federal Government Fishing Regulations, Ban On Mako shark fishing Petition
Submitted by dancer on Tue, 2009-12-15 06:13Hello Everybody, we have been astounded to learn that from 31st January 2010, 3 Sharks (Longfin Mako, Shortfin Mako & Probeagle) will be added to the same list as the Great White. Can all fisho's please get behind this as this could be the first of many nails in the "recrational fishing Coffin" who knows, maybe your favorite species will be next on the list........maybe sampsons?, GTs?, Barra?, Red Emperor???
I wanted to draw your attention to this important petition that I recently signed: "Ban the ban on new Federal Government Fishing Legislation" http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/governmentfishingbans/ I really think this is an important cause, and I'd like to encourage you to add your signature, too. It's free and takes just a few seconds of your time. Thanks!
Please email this link to all your fishing contacts, we need to show "the powers that be" that when the fisherpeople stand united we cant easily be walked over or pushed aroound!!!!!

Salting Mulies
Submitted by crasny1 on Mon, 2009-12-14 21:25Had enough over the weekend of trying to fish with plain old mulies. Got some pool salt and salted them prior to the fish on Sunday.
Remarkable. The bait stayed on much longer and 2 coral trout later thought what the hell.
Has anobody got some input into this and how long do you salt them etc. Did not seem to effect the bite at all when compared aginst fresh non salted mulies!
Cheers
