Cray theives
Submitted by TheBradyBunch on Mon, 2009-12-21 12:10Hey all,
Just wondering if u see someone pulling ur craypot and u get their boat number etc, why is it that fisheries can't do anything about it.
I think it is crap that ppl do this to one another, as we spend the time to go catch fresh cray and see ppl pull our pots all the time. It is normally the same boat.
So all in all have got bugger all crays this year compared to previous years.

Placement of cray pots
Submitted by sea-kem on Mon, 2009-12-21 11:18Was just wondering if anyone had ideas on how best to set a cray pot. It's my first season of fishing with pots. Do they go on top of the reef structure or on the sand near reef? Any feedback appreciated.
Cheers

strange things found in fish guts
Submitted by skrewloose on Mon, 2009-12-21 09:50just thought i would ask the question of the strange things you have found in fish guts. i caught a herring a while ago and found a small hook in its mouth and about 20cm of line and a swivel hanging out the other end must of been painful considering it was a pretty bid swivel

'Extreme' freediving
Submitted by bod on Sun, 2009-12-20 21:00Deep sea freediver pushes limits
- From: AP December 19, 2009
Sara Campbell during a constant weight free dive in 2007 when she broke three world records
- Freediver stretches the limits of the body
- Says each dive is an extreme challenge
- "Has more of the fish gene"
BRITON Sara Campbell is on a mission to stretch the limits of the human
body - diving down into the murky ocean depths for minutes at a time,
on a single gulp of air.
Extreme depth freedivers swim down as far as possible, while coping with pressure that crushes their lungs to the size of a lemon and would wreck their eardrums if they were not careful.
The record-breaking Briton admitted it is tough.
"Each dive is a phenomenal physical and mental challenge,'' the 37-year-old said. "Your body goes through very extreme changes.
"Your heart rate drops, all the blood comes to the centre of your body, and then that blood starts to fill the lung tissues so that the air spaces can contract even more.
"For every 10 metres that you descend, the pressure doubles, so that means your lungs halve in size. So down at 90 metres, 100 metres, they're about a ninth, tenth of the size."
Campbell, who shot from freediving beginner to world record holder within months, is out to break the record again and crack the 100-metre barrier in 2010.
She earned a silver medal at the World Championships in the Bahamas earlier this month with an "easy" dive of 92 metres. That has fired her up to reclaim the world records from her only rival, Russia's Natalia Molchanova, in 2010.
One metre 50 centimetres tall (just under five feet), Campbell's extraordinary ability has rocked the sport of freediving.
Some physiologists believe the yoga trainer from Burnham-on-Crouch in southeast England is a "natural" freediver, able to hit significant depths with little training.
Campbell believes she was born to do freediving, having a strong mammalian diving reflex, which helps mammals optimise their oxygen underwater. Through evolution, dolphins, for example, have a far stronger reflex than humans.
"It probably means I'm a little bit less evolved as a human being, I retain more of the fish gene and have less of the human gene," she said.
Four years ago, fed up with the London rat race, Campbell moved to Dahab, a laid-back diving resort on Egypt's Red Sea coast, to teach yoga. One of her students recommended she try freediving, given her breathing control skills.
Tired of chasing targets, Campbell resisted for a year but gave it a go in April 2006.
Hepatitis A stopped her progress after six weeks but she began training again in April 2007 and, in October that year, set world records in three different disciplines within 48 hours and then claimed a world championships gold medal.
In the blue riband constant weight discipline, freedivers, using flippers, take a weight down with them to speed up the descent but have to bring it back.
Campbell's personal best is 96 metres, a world record achieved in April in three minutes and 36 seconds under water.
She has dived 100 metres twice, but blacked out within a minute on the surface, invalidating the attempts.
Her rival Molchanova broke the 100-metre barrier in September, reaching 101 metres.
No-one else comes close to challenging the pair.
"She and I are now playing ping-pong with the world records," Campbell said.
"It's like the Cold War! There's definite rivalry. It's the two of us battling it out at the top. We'll see what happens next year but having seen how strong my silver medal dive was I'm really fired up.
"I'm certainly not going to sit back and let Natalia push her dives very much deeper."
Campbell enjoys stretching man's boundaries.
"Not so long ago, medical science said beyond 50 metres it is not possible for the human being to survive.
"The exciting thing is you do a dive, you don't know if you can make it but when you do, a door opens and you realise that actually you can go a bit further," she added.
"Human beings have almost limitless potential and a lot of that is governed by the mind. If you believe something, you can achieve it."

Sand crab as bait?
Submitted by buschy on Sun, 2009-12-20 16:36Being a new moon while fishing up at Jurien the last couple of days, the sand crabs were out in force. When I retrieved one of my baits a juvenile crab let go as soon as it left the surf - I managed to catch it and contemplated using it as bait. It would have been about 5cm across the shell and nice and soft still. Ended up letting it go as I was not sure.
Has anyone ever used them as bait before? How did you go?
Cheers,
Rob

Barramundi fingerlings
Submitted by bod on Sun, 2009-12-20 10:35
Thousands of hatchery-bred barramundi are to be poured into the Johnstone River, near Innisfail in far north Queensland.
The micro-tagged barramundi fingerlings are part of a research project being run by the Queensland Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation to determine if fish stocking methods in rivers and impoundments are delivering the best possible results for barramundi enthusiasts. The project aims to provide information to community stocking groups and managers on how best to plan and implement stocking programs.
A microtag is only about 1mm long and a special machine is used to inject it into the cheek muscle of the 50mm long fish before it is released.A special scanner, similar to the wands used at airport security checks, is needed to detect their presence.
The tags allow researchers to identify if a barramundi caught in the river was originally stocked there.Painting Ally
Submitted by doublej on Sun, 2009-12-20 10:04Just about 3/4 of the way through my project.
24ft ally which I have added a hardtop and self draining deck to.
I'm about to paint the hull. Does anyone known if you have to rub it back to bare ally or just etch the paint and feather in any scratches or dings that are already there and then give it a coat or two..
To rub it back all the way will be nightmare but if that's what is needed so be it.
Looking at painting the hull dark blue and the rest white.
All info would be apprieciated.
Cheers all and Merry Xmas.

Couple of fish from yesterday
Submitted by Seaquest on Sun, 2009-12-20 09:30Managed to get out for a fish for the first time after the opening. Started out at first light only to find a strong south easterly blowing and lightning on the horizon. Decided to stay in close for a while until conditions improved. My mate caught a nice queeny that was released after a quick snap. After about an hour the weather improved a bit and we headed out. Got to my first destination only to find a pro fishing there so decided to keep going. Got to the next spot and the wind had started to swing south west. Caught a nice sambo which was released and a few other small fish. By now the wind had started to pick up and the drift became quite fast. Decided to give one more spot a try before heading in. First drift my mate Dave scored a nice dhuy. Next drift Dave hooked up again to something solid. After a short fight the fish managed to straighten the hook and get off. Bugger! By now the wind was quite strong and we decided to call it a day. Came home with a nice feed in trying conditions.
Cheers

fishing today off gero
Submitted by flagpole on Sat, 2009-12-19 18:02hey all
my self a mate soro and fellow member LB decided to hit the water today for the first fish of the new season. i couldnt wait to get out there after the last fishing trip i had ther day before the season closed when i broke my steering cable. we headed out i decided to head up to a few spots off coronation beach which is north of gero. we got a few miles off this lump so we put some lures on to see if there was any maks around. a few minutes later the spool was screaming BINGO i thought this was going to be a great start to the day. as soro grabbed the rod and tryed to det the hook it pulled out, arh well never mind we set the lures again and got another hit and lost it again. i wasnt happy. so we pulled up on this spot and dropped the bottom gear an hour later nothing so i new it was time to change spot.
we head off in search of some maks again as well as trying to come across some ground, we headed in close and there was this old waypoint in the gps so we gave it a go. within ten LB was on to a nice fish a couple of minutes later he landed his first nice dhuy. so we went around again and same spot soro and LB both hook up they both got pinks. wat was going on i wasnt even getting a touch. not long after they landed another pinkie each i got some thing sweet i thought it was great, until i got it the surface F$cken bolt cutters. thats like rubbing salt into a wound. i thought we'd gi ve it one more try to try and get our 6 fish. the lines went down we started jigging and bang LB had hook another decent sized fish i couldnt believe it i was only a couple of metres away and he got it, that sucks. a couple of minutes later he had a second dhuy on the boat we had our six fish so i said lets head in, we trowled some lures on the way home but nothing want to eat them.
a good result for the to bad i couldnt get one, thats fishing?
