I'm heading off to dunsborough just after New years with the boys for a fishing trip, I'm taking down my 5 metre runabout,

I'm just wondeing what I'll encounter down there.

Squid? KGWhiting? Bottom Bouncing? Crabs?

Any Advice or genneral spots that i should hit or avoid would be greatly appreciated

hey guys just wondering about camping places south or north to go on a holiday fishing with the misses just want to sleep in the tent . but want it close to a good fishing spot off the beach or rocks prefebly cheap 2  cherz 

i havnt fished in perth yet and this arvo i was going to drop a handline around the pylons inside the marina on the north side near the rocks. im going to use smallish hooks and mulie for bait to try and get some bream or skippy i heard were around there. has anyone got any tips on refining my fishing a bit as far as the marina goes? iv heard theres some decent fish to be had if you know what your doing.

im a bit confused as to what the new bag limits are on dhueys, snapper ect... i heard the boat limit is a combined total of 2 of the five 'demersal' fish?? is this right, and then what fish are included in the five???? thanks.

Am just wondering if anyone can tell me what the movement of crays is. I understand they have walked now from the shallower depths to deeper water but just wondering what their movements are from there and when they move. Am new to chasing crays so interested to know what to expect. Cheers

Hi everyone, im wondering if anyone knows a good place for braid. I have about a 50 dollar budget and the best ive come across is at anaconda 2 80lb 300m spools for $62. Anyone know of any other good deals going and if anyone has tried the mojika tournament braid before? I need to spool 2 penn 850's with 80lb braid(sambo jigging)

I decided to head up to my "office" this arvo. Took the normal route in from Two Rocks and guess what...... The fuggin cockie up there has decided to do some earthmoving/clearing. The track in is now unpassable as there now exists a big wind row where the road past the dune used to be. No signs.. no nothing,, just a dead end. I'm concerned now that someone will crack the shits and set fire to the wind row. Why do people do this? Does anyone know what is happening up there?

Just seeing if any of you would be interested in a Bozo's flathead comp starting in the new year.  Phil is considering doing one, but there wasn't much interest in the last comp unfortunately, so he is wondering if it will be worthwhile doing another one.  I've told him summer (Jan/Feb) are flathead months in Perth and that there should be a few keen anglers wanting to try and catch them on plastics.  I thought I'd just see if there was going to be any interest before discussing it with him further.  

I'm thinking the categories will probably be :

biggest flathead (with bozo lure)

best photo - bozo lure flathead

best photo of bozo fish (any species)

Mako Matt and Daisy won $75 worth of lures last comp with hardly any competition.  Let me know if you guys are keen and I'll tee it up.

Amazing pictures of Southern Ocean marine life captured by scientists working in the Antarctic were released today.

The inhabitants of the continent's seas were captured as part of a study on biodiversity carried out by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS).

Images of the marine creatures, which were taken in the Bellingshausen Sea, West Antarctica, include ice fish, sea pigs and crustaceans.

The underwater images also show giant sea spiders, rare rays and beautiful basket stars.

Basket Star: This bloodless creatures weighs 11 pounds and lives for about 35 years

Captured: An amphipod sandhopper (top) and up close and personal with an octopus

Skate: A slow grower, skate is also slow to reproduce and has proven susceptible to overfishing

'Few people realise just how rich in biodiversity the Southern Ocean is - even a single trawl can reveal a fascinating array of weird and wonderful creatures as would be seen on a coral reef,' said BAS research cruise leader Dr David Barnes.

'These animals are potentially very good indicators of environmental change as many occur in the shallows, which are changing fast, but also in deeper water which will warm much less quickly.

Some like it cold: the Antarctic icefish thriives in waters between -2C and 4C

We are family: The isopod crustacean (top) is related to the prawn, while comb jellies are a type of jellyfish

'We can now begin to get a better understanding of how the ecosystem will adapt to change.

'Our new studies on the diverse range of marine creatures living in the deep waters of the Bellingshausen Sea will help us build a more complete picture of Antarctica's marine biodiversity and give us an important baseline against which we can compare future impact on marine life.'

Hi all

I'm heading to walpole and i'm leaving the boat at home (much to my disgust!) as per the minister for recreations instruction, but i'll have plenty of time to chase some fish landbased with the kids. was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of a couple spots we might get a blacky or 2? or even just some herring or whiting.

Any help appreciated.

Also any touristy things that might stand out in your memory.

was out today off mindarie, and headed out to the 3 mile for a bit of a free dive. Mate and I anchored up and placed a dive flag only to have a boat speed past at atleast 20knots no more then 15m off the back of my boat. with plenty of room between the boat and the reef we saw no reason for this speeding boat to be any closer then 50m from us. This was very frustraiting, idiots like that put divers/swimmers in danger.(when we swim to the reef we have a big orange float each trailing 10m behind us to keep us visible to boaters. after today i dont think ill be geting in the water with out the float, as there is a miniority that dont seem to care about swimmers/divers)

 The other concerning thing we witnessed was a 3.8m tinny with 10hp engine, that was occupied by two adults and two very small kids. The tinny was actually heading out just past the three mile as we where heading home. at this point the seabreeze was well and truly in and the seas became rough with big swell coming through. we tried to wave down the boat to let them no about the strong wind warning forecasted however they kept on goin out. (I will admit the kids had life jackets on) however it was very concerning to see such a small vessel with kids onboard in such rough conditions so far out. fair enough if it was two adults but personally i think to have two small kids onboard and head out in such conditions is irresponsible.

Just wondering if Dhuie heads are any good as craypot bait, I heard a story the day that the're no good as they are a cray predator not sure if this is a wives tale or not. Got a few stored in my freezer so would be a shame to waste them.

Fisheries Minister Norman Moore has suspended commercial rock lobster fishing over Christmas after the latest official figures showed higher than expected catches in the B and C zone of the fishery.

Mr Moore said yesterday commercial rock lobster fishers, particularly in the fishery’s B zone, had greatly exceeded the expected catch.

He said his decision to close the fishery followed advice from commercial rock lobster fishers and processors and supported his earlier decision to limit the commercial rock lobster catch this season to 5,500 tonnes.

“I indicated at the beginning of this season that I would adjust management arrangements for the fishery if that was necessary,” Mr Moore said.

”Industry members have since expressed concern that if the current high catch rate continues, the industry will achieve its first half season targets early and this will result in all or part of the fishery having to close over the Chinese New Year period.

“This is the time of year which traditionally attracts higher prices. In making these management changes I have also considered the sort of action that is practical to implement at very short notice.”

The Minister said his latest decision meant commercial rock lobster fishers must ensure they stop fishing in the fishery’s B and C zones by midnight December 24 (Christmas Eve).

Commercial lobster fishing could resume in B zone, which stretches from Jurien to Exmouth, early morning on January 11 and in C zone, which includes Jurien, the Perth metropolitan coast and South-West water to Leeuwin, from early January 4.

Further possible management changes to B and C zones are due for consideration at a formal review early in January.

Mr Moore based his decision on extensive advice from the WA Fishing Industry Council (WAFIC) and the Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee (RLIAC).

“WAFIC has indicated that it would support extending the B Zone closure until January 25,” he said.

“I have referred this matter to the RLIAC for advice and will announce my decision in early 2010.”

The Minister said the changes gave industry an opportunity to obtain the best return for the catch by allowing them to access both the pre-Christmas and Chinese New Year markets.

Mr Moore also said he had signed off on an industry consultation plan to move the rock lobster sector towards a quota managed fishery.

A quota management system allows fishers to choose when and how they fish within catch limits, alleviating the Government’s need to micro manage the fishery via pot and fish day restrictions.

Dismissing calls for a royal commission into the commercial rock lobster fishing system, the Minister said he had released a paper detailing key proposals on a quota managed system and a possible implementation framework. He will be seeking feedback in the next six months before a final decision is made.

“It is interesting that (former Fisheries Minister) Jon Ford has suddenly discovered the concept of a fishing quota management system when the idea obviously held little appeal during his time as Minister for Fisheries,” Mr Moore said.

“I told industry before the start of the season that an adaptive management approach would be used to manage the fishery this season. I cannot rule out more changes if they are required to meet the management objectives.”

The changes do not affect recreational rock lobster fishing.

Gday fisho's, in about a weeks time i am heading down to Augusta for a couple of nights of fishing. Ive never fished there before, but have done some research on this site, and people seem to say the Colourpatch Jetty can be a good spot for herring/whiting?

I'm taking the kayak down so i'll be able to hit the river pretty hard, but does anyone know if the fish are on the bite at the moment like Bream or Tailor?

For all you more experienced people... What I am wanting to know is what the difference is between a Overhead rod and a spinning rod, and further to that how much of a difference it makes putting the other style reels on them.

Example: I have a saltiga gt 86/ 8'6" /100 - 180g /max line pe 8g sitting at home, next to it I have a Jigwrex (shimano jig rod - also spin setup). These were purchased before my eyes were opened to the wonders of the mighty jigging master overheads. This overhead then made me think would I be better buying and learning to cast with a overhead. Now I am sitting here wondering if I have wasted my money on the jigwerx and the GT popper (neither have ever even been used) or if they could be used with overhead reels.

With the Jigwerx I have made my mind up and I am going to buy a three kings light rod made by jigging master (I hear I will not be let down) this is on order already and I cant wait for it to arrive in January some time.

The saltiga I am loath to give up on.

So questions I need answers to are:

1) What is the difference between the rods?

2) How much does it affect spinning rods to be used with overhead reels?

3) Given the cash I have sitting around in gear that isnt used would I be better off just buying a spinner - or are overheads that much better - or will a overhead work with the saltiga GT?

4) What would be the best overhead for aussie salmon in the south west off the rocks and GT and bigger fish out of Exmouth and the AB Islands?

5) Given the above overhead reel what would be the best surf/rock casting rod to go with it - will mainly be fishing for salmon in the SW?

For now forget the budget - ofcourse one exists but Im not sure how big it is yet - probably purchase one item at a time.

I was looking at getting a new real for trolling exxy, i got 2 tyrnoses and at the prices they are now,i am asking what do we all thing of other brand EG:okum,tld or any others im brands ???? i have a tyrnos 30 already ,hope fully in the next fue weeks thanks all
