Sounder installation
Submitted by wrassinator on Wed, 2009-01-07 17:38Calling all sounder gurus,
Installed my Garmin 160C sounder as attached. Noticing she's not holding bottom and getting screen clutter >12kn. Could the above install location be gettin interference from the strakes? I know I can prob just drill some new holes and check this theory out - but figured some FW advice would be best bet to start with, before I break out the cordless...
Cheers,

Tips on offshore gear
Submitted by H.S. Chan on Wed, 2009-01-07 13:09Hey guys, im a experianced land based fisho and i've never fished offshore. If i was to start, what equip and gear must i have? Like what's necessary? I have no idea, what kind of rod, reels, tackle etc. Im not thinkin of big game like sharks, marlins or whatever. Probably anything 35kg and under. I do realise that the range of gear could vary heaps but i just need an idea. Im looking at getting 2 rods and reels, probably 1 lighter action then the other.
Thanks for any info.

Halco Max
Submitted by Stevef on Wed, 2009-01-07 09:44Hi, Happy New Year to you all.
I am keen to have a crack at some Mackies behind the 3 mile over summer and autumn. My plan is to troll an array of lures from deep diving minnows (X-Rap and F-18) up to skirts on top. I am considering using the Halco Max as a mid-water lure to sit between the deep and shallow set lures.
Just wondering if anybody has any experience using these lures as they are fairly new onto the market. They appear to fit the bill and look a nice lure................ but do they catch fish?
Any input would be appreciated.
Cheers Steve

Buying new Sounder
Submitted by Buz on Tue, 2009-01-06 21:56Gday all, am in the market for a new depth sounder and thought i would see what everyone thought was a good one these days.
First of all up until recently i have been using a older model colour furuno sounder on my 5.5m boat, mainly for offshore fishing, inshore to deep sorts of water, you know Dhui's, Snapper and so on. Has served me well but is now starting to play up and is not worth repairing(so i'm told, will be a very costly exercise if possible).
So i thought i would ask around and see what other people are using or would recommend. I dont mind paying a fair bit for another decent one so i am not looking to go skint. So far the only ones i have had a look at are the new furuno sounders the FCV-620 and FCV-585. I have also had a mate recommend to me the hummingbird range.
Any idea's, thoughts, recommendations or personnel experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Mackie/Tuna advice
Submitted by eddie on Tue, 2009-01-06 16:55Hey guys! As I'm come into my first summer fishing in WA, I'm keen to have a crack at catching my first mackie or tuna.
Not asking for anyone to give away secret spots or anything, but if you want to share some places to hunt NOR, then by all means PM me!
No....what I want is your advice on tactics! Gimme whatever you are willing to share...
What kinda tackle do I need? Line weight? Lure favorites?
Trolling advice?
Best approaches for working bait schools?
FAD tactics?
Time of day/depth/structures?
Any and all tips welcome....and the more specific the better! I figure I'm not the only newbie on here, so maybe this thread can help alot of people for the summer session.
Thanks in advance to the most helpful fishos on the internet!

Full Moon
Submitted by wrassinator on Tue, 2009-01-06 12:17So....who would consider headed out offshore this Sunday with the full moon, huge tide, BUT light winds (forecast anyway) worthwhile?
Or should I just try for mullas on the beach?
Just a quick poll out of interests sake...
Cheers,

Where to go in feb??
Submitted by silly on Mon, 2009-01-05 21:08hi all
Having a week or so off in mid feb and wanting to go on a fishing trip somewhere. Just cant decide where?? I would love to go up to exmouth again but just worried about it being cyclone season. Ive been up in aug, nov and early jan so i know it will be hot at that time of year but doesnt bother me...... only concern is the wind, On one of trips to exxy in january we reached the day the cyclone hit port hedland and it was windy as hell the first day.... but there was a window to fish when the wind swung directions each day so there were options as to which side to fish on. If i was to head up there i'll probaly take the 4.5m dinghy with me too. SHould i try my luck?? Other ideas were jurien or steep..... or is there anywhere else?? I like the idea of somewhere where there is a cape so if its blowing i can fish on the lee side.
cheers
Long Point
Submitted by abandon on Mon, 2009-01-05 16:32Has anyone hit Long Point lately? It's been pretty windy with a large southerly component, so I'm wondering if anyones had any success at the north facing beach. I went there a few weeks ago and it was pretty weedy...
Just got back from Kalbarri, landed my first ever mulloway, undersize but a mulloway nonetheless. Some good tailor up there too, will post pics and a report soon.

tinny bashing jurien
Submitted by Blake.T. on Sun, 2009-01-04 18:44hey guys,
i know this has been done before but, i am heading to jurien in a couple of weeks and taking the tinny (4.35m) up there. i have fished there before but never from the boat. so i am looking for some help for some good ground inside and just outside the bay, for light jigging/drift baiting for pinkies dhuies etc and maybe trolling up some pelagics.
Also whats it like getting out through the reef there? ive heard the south passage can be hairy?
Any help is much appreciated and i'm not after secret spots, just areas too try.
Thanks

Flangies in Tasmania
Submitted by flangies on Sun, 2009-01-04 10:36
Hey all its flangies writing in from Spreyton Tasmania, You wouldnt believe it but its about 22 celcius right now and it's the hottest day we have had this week. only about 10 days a year it goes over 25 cecius, Just thought id tease you perth boys :)
Dad and i went fishing yesterday (tackle is about 20-30% above what you pay in perth!!!
) In the morning it was blowing a gale so we headed to the mersey river, there was about 20 people fishing there didnt catch a thing. Within an hour i had landed and given away 6 salmon and my sister had caught a flathead and a snotty trevally (with my help ). The locals were amazed as i was explaining to them soft plastics and what they are and how to use them, and i was the only one to catch a salmon all day let alone 6. I kept 1 small salmon for shark bait and gave away the rest.
Later on when the weather died down we went to Devonport and to the local jetty that actually hangs off the rock walls there. It was amazing i had never seen fishin like this before, there were schools of salmon patrolling up and down a 20 meter area , Every cast we would get follows from them and land one every 5 or so casts. Then my rod struggled and up surfaced a baracouta or baracouda i dnt know which one is which, was about 40cm.
This was halarious, Dad was using a metal slice for the first time in his life and he rarely fishes so hes standing there saying james james theres a squid on my lure o_0 he actually hooked a squid 34cm and landed it. So i chucked the jig on and within 15 minutes i got another four! all between 30-40cm (tubes) and i gave dad my rod for a couple casts. I explained to him how to use the jig and away he went, First cast he made he goes "hey james i either got a snag or a very big fish" Then surfaced a massive 45cm squid which almost snapped my rod!
The fishing was amazing , came home about 2am and cleaned the catch . (only kept the squid threw the rest back).
Because of the small population there is very little pressure on the fisheries, especially in the salt water area.
Still waiting to get a shark , going tomorrow night.
I'll chat again soon, action packed holiday
