Fishing Discussion
Albany 16th Dec - 3rd jan
Submitted by jayce on Tue, 2016-12-06 14:21Hi Guys
Im heading down to Albany for 3 weeks over christmas. Will be my 1st year down there since selling the boat so if anyone is looking for a deckie hit me up.
Have all my own gear for everthing except superdeep at the shelf (will still give it a go with jigs on manual wind but).
Have a few spots off there not super reliable but and i know where to always catch a feed of squid.
Happy to split fuel / ice and more than happy to help clean the boat. and like to keep the boat clean through out the day while fishing.
Will supply beers for the day if you like to have one while fishing. Have a skippers ticket fishing license and a bit of knowledge in the area.
If your into shooting i am more than happy to return the favour with a couple nights out the paddocks shooting foxs when i get home from christmas break.
Posted in fishing buddies aswell but doesnt get much publicity down there.
Cheers Jayce
The Cut - Herring
Submitted by crasny1 on Tue, 2016-12-06 12:38The Cut Herring fishing area on the north side near the marina is on my way home from work. What I have noticed is that it is empty every night/arvo for the last month when previously it was always packed.
Has the hezza's deserted this area. It appears that more people are fishing the southern estuary side of the cut which traditionally has been better for tailor, but in the twilight hours.
Just has me perplexed about what is going on.
Has anyone got any information.

Abolishing Size Limits
Submitted by Jamie-Chester on Mon, 2016-12-05 19:02Just thought I'd mention something that is going on at the moment at Fisheries.
There is a series of proposals on size limit changes which are quite interesting IMO. For example they are proposing to abolish max size limit for estuary and malabar cod (divers wont be happy) abolishing minimum size limit for blue groper, black arse, baldchin, all mackerel, samsons, yellowtail kings and amberjack and removing the "no more than 2 black bream above 40cm" rule. I think some of these changes are rather stupid - some are not. Pink snapper size reduction to 450mm and 380mm north of lancelin, increase in mulloway min size to 700 mm - anyway comments need to be in before 23rd of december - there is a link to the paper here. http://www.fish.wa.gov.au/Documents/management_papers/fmp280.pdf

New to Dunsborough
Submitted by Conorfarrell1 on Mon, 2016-12-05 11:42Hey fellas,
Recently i just bought a 5.45 meter boat and recently went offshore in Dunsborough to go fishing but only found myself with sandy grounds with minimal structure. If someone could give me any good advice on where to go it would be greatly appreciated. Just wondering also about the 'Wright Bank' looks like great to go fishing ?
Thanks

Tailor hotspots
Submitted by lachieH on Sun, 2016-12-04 15:53hi everyone,
i have an uncle from New Zealand coming over and he loves fishing. I thought I would take him down to the beach for some early morning tailor. I will be using the basic paternoster rig with mulies but I was just wondering where the tailor are firing currently?
Edit: anywhere north of the river is fine and willing to get up early to get a fish in before sunrise
thanks,
lachie

Jurien Bay
Submitted by fab on Fri, 2016-12-02 12:25Hey my mate and I are off to Jurien in a few weeks. Was wondering if anyone has tried fishing the headland about 15 km north of Jurien. If yes, how do you get there? As we can't see any tracks on google earth. Also, how was the fishing up there, is it worth the drive?

Get the trolling gear out
Submitted by Noxious on Fri, 2016-12-02 10:13G'day
Haven't seen many (any) posts about Tuna, Mackies and Kings in the last month. Anyone been getting out there and dragging some lures around in recent weeks?
We are going to launch the tub tomorrow and hopefully wrangle a few inshore pelagics. Done quite well the last couple of years, but have found it starts firing around the start of Jan, and will generally fire inshore before offshore. Two summers ago we were catching 6-8 kings a trip, last year we got only 1 all season. But managed heaps of Tuna and our first metro mackie.
Anyone got into any pelagics yet?

Putting crays to sleep
Submitted by Curndog on Fri, 2016-12-02 08:30Hi guys,
call me a softy but I'd like to know what is the best way to put crayfish to sleep. At the moment I bring them home and put them straight in the freezer in a shopping bag. A mate told me to snap off there antennas and wrap them tight. But I just put them in loosely and snap them off and wrap tight later. Is this the best way?

Chirp or no chirp?
Submitted by Curndog on Thu, 2016-12-01 21:24Hey guys,
got my mind set on buying a Garmin 95sv sounder/plotter combo. A friend of mine has one and he loves it! Anyone else got one or had experience with this unit and any feedback would be great. Biggest question do I go chirp or not? Not 100% convinced chirp sounders are better? Thanks

Hairy debate
Submitted by brown364 on Thu, 2016-12-01 18:37
The brown tips on the endopodite which I have seen on all females, is this classed as setose ? I understand the small fine hairs that appear down the sides and that is fair call to release these girls as required but where is the line drawn? Anyone in the know on this topic who could shed some light would be much appreciated. I don't want to throw them all back if not required due to paranoia. Regards b364

WTB pencil gardies
Submitted by poida on Thu, 2016-12-01 17:58Trying to buy some pencil gardies for the point. These take little helium to get lift and do well on mackies. They are normally around the bait shops but we can't find any atm. If you see some please let me know where. I'm not after the big gardies but slim one with 14-16 to the kg packet.
NOR would be great
Cheers
