Land based squid spots.
Submitted by lachieH on Mon, 2014-08-04 18:52Hi everyone. I have been searching through previous squid posts for land based and everyone said ink on a jetty. But I really need a proper spot to go to without searching jetty for ink. I saw that jetty at the Cockburn sound are good, woodies, north and south moles, and the Claremont jetty. But I want to know which place is the most productive and if you have a more productive place other than these it would be great to know! But not any secret spots just good ones for beginners

Question for the auto sparkies & the like minded
Submitted by Muppet on Mon, 2014-08-04 17:46I am fed up with losing batteries in my tub due to lack of use. I have dual 720c batts through the suaul blue seas isolators and emergency connect switch.
I have a spare 40 watt solar panel. If i fit a solar regulator to that, can i leave that in the boat, hooked up to both batteries for the period it sits idol in the drive, or will that damage the batteries as well, seeing as it will be pumping the max amps the solar panel allows into them 24/7.
Is that a way out of buying a trickle charger ?
Other option is, i have an 8 stage repco charger, 8 amps. Can i leave that hooked up to a battery and change it over to the other every fortnight or so ?
I am not getting to use the boat as often i should be down here.
Thanks in advance.

1st time using Electric reel
Submitted by Shortylook on Mon, 2014-08-04 08:19After using the Seaborg mega twin and shimanno 9000 plays electric reals in coral bay the past week, I'm not sure in going to be able to go back to normal reels for the deep stuff. I used the 9000 plays with a bent but rod, but the mega twin with a live fibre venom rod. The venom set up felt more comfortable, but I would of liked to try the shimanno on it, just to see the difference. Both awesome set ups.
Cray Pot sizes
Submitted by big john on Sun, 2014-08-03 18:51Looking at having a crack at potting some crays this coming season. I've noticed there's amateur size pots and pro size pots.
Is one better than the other, and for that matter, is it ok for recs to use a pro size pot? Keen to get a double bait box setup.

A Sunday funny

LOL..!!
A WOMAN was flying from Melbourne to Brisbane ...
Unexpectedly, the plane was diverted to Sydney.
The flight attendant explained that there would be a d...elay, and if the passengers wanted to get off the aircraft the plane would re-board in 50 minutes..
Everybody got off the plane except one lady who was blind.
A man had noticed her as he walked by and could tell the lady was blind because her Seeing Eye Dog lay quietly underneath the seats in front of her throughout the entire flight.
He could also tell she had flown this very flight before because the pilot approached her, and calling her by name, said, 'Kathy, we are in Sydney for almost an hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your legs?'
The blind lady replied, 'No thanks, but maybe Max would Like to stretch his legs.'
Picture this:
All the people in the gate area came to a complete standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot walk off the plane with a Seeing Eye dog!
The pilot was even wearing sunglasses.
People scattered.
They not only tried to change planes, but they were trying to change airlines!
True story...
Have a great day and remember...
...THINGS AREN'T ALWAYS AS THEY APPEAR.
A DAY WITHOUT LAUGHTER IS A DAY WASTED!!!

Bag limits over two days?
Submitted by MandurahMatt on Sun, 2014-08-03 10:05A couple weeks back i saw a post on Facebook where a bloke caught 4 snapper by himself and kept all 4 saying that he was not breaking any rules as he caught 2 prior to midnight and 2 after midnight.
Ive copied this from fisheries guidlines.
Mixed species daily bag limit
This is the combined maximum number of fish of
any species within one category (such as demersal
or large pelagic) that a fisher may take or bring
on to land in any 24-hour period (from midnight to
midnight, except from midday to midday for marron
and when recreationally netting).
My interpretation from this leads me to belive irelevant of the time caught it states "that a fisher may take or bring onto land" so therefore for him to keep 4 he must bring 2 to shore before midnight, then head out again after midnight.
How does everyone else veiw this?

Dog Cruelty Perth
Submitted by timboon on Sun, 2014-08-03 07:44I know this aint the place but anyway....
I don't have facebook where I'm sure this will no doubt get a thumbs down or whatever happens on there but I thought I would bring this to the attention of the good people here on FW...
Click the link and have a squiz at the form of this fine ( Australian ) citizen???
Now I guess we all loose our temper from time to time but this bloke needs his head caved in monthly...
I'll take August if anyone wants September...
I bet they don't throw him in the can and no doubt he'll be allowed to own another animal at some point... If anyone happens to know where old mate lives I'm not suggesting anyone should do anything stupid but I wouldn't mind sharpening up the blue steels and kicking his head in!!
Usually the lover not fighter type but this fucks me right off!!

Shimano Twinpower advice?
Submitted by snapper_seeker on Sat, 2014-08-02 21:11Hi guys, I'm after some advice on the twinpowers, I'm looking at ordering one in from japan, either the 6000 or 8000pg model. I will be using it to flick live baits and lures around the metro area for mackies in Summer and want something a bit different. Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with them or any safe websites that you trust to order one in from. A big thanks to anyone who gives me some info!

How do you tune your sounder
Submitted by randall df223 on Sat, 2014-08-02 20:05I am in the processing of upgrading from an old Furuno grayscale ls41oo sounder to a smicko Simrad nss7. In the past I have tuned the old Furuno according to instructions I was pointed towards on the internet.
Is this a fairly standard (accepted) way of tuner any sounder, despite their brand or capability? Will it work for the new Simrad?
This is how I have tuned the cheapo Furuno:
1) Turn off AUTO mode and select NORMAL or MANUAL on 200 kHz
2) Adjust the range scale so the bottom echo is in the bottom 2/3's of the screen
3) CLUTTER - off
4) SIGNAL LEVEL - off
5) GAIN - lowest
6) Increase GAIN until clutter appears
7) Increase CLUTTER until interference is all but cleared
8) Increase SIGNAL LEVEL to clear the light interference
9) Adjust the range / gain to suit changes in the depth.
What brand of sounder does everyone have and how do you tune it?

I have read a few old posts and been on the DOF website but I can't seem to find it. Is there such rules on things like size, type, amount, location, weather or not you can create a string of them etc?

advertising hype vs real world
Submitted by rocklobster on Fri, 2014-08-01 23:00Today i dropped by a tackle shop to take advantage of the eofy sales and i was intending to splurge on a high end reel in the 2500-3000 bracket. I had a ' test drive' of most daiwas and shimanos including branzino, exist, stella etc and i found a sustain 2500 to be the smoothest and most accurate ( least handle/gear play ) of them all for a paltry 280 bucks! ( well paltry compared to the others...) and more than capable for my target species. What are everyone's thoughts on exxy reels? Are they worth the high $ or just a rort? And yeah, i bought the sustain! Cheers!

Tip for Swan River Trolling
Submitted by Jackfrost80 on Fri, 2014-08-01 09:18Planning on taking the Mrs on the river around Peppy/Bicton and up to Freo for our first fishing trip in the new dinghy.
The outboard has about an hour on the clock so far so I want to get some break in time and fishing done at the same time so plan on chucking a couple of Yo Zuri Crystal Minnows out the back before we stop up and target some skippy, squid and whiting on the drift.
Being a shore based fisho can anyone offer me any advice on the best approach to trolling for tailor or is it as easy and chucking the lures out the back and cruising up and down the river? Any direction on the best spots to try would also be well appreciated.
Cheers JF

Eupro cyclone
Submitted by lachieH on Fri, 2014-08-01 08:00Hi everyone. I have recently purchased the eupro cyclone surf fishing rod. It will be mainly for salmon and tailor fishing. I have looked at the weight rating and it says 17-40lbs. I just want to make sure that this is the right rod for the job because I always thought that that be a bit heavy for tailor and salmon. I havn't ripped the tag off yet but am hoping to on the weekend so any quick info would be great!

Beach Tailor
Submitted by lachieH on Thu, 2014-07-31 19:11Hi everyone. I know that I put a lot of topics about beach and river fishing for bread and butter species, I know now mostly how to fish the river but I have not unlocked the code of tailor fishing off the beach. I have gone to Trigg 3 times in the past 2 months in the morning, one with a swell of only 1 metre, another of 2m and another of 3m. Only tailor caught over the whole time was one at the 3 metre and caught by the people next to us. I think I now need to try other beaches and places like the floreat drain or something. I have been using mostly a star sinker with ganged hooks and mulie but have also used drift baiting, reeling in the mulie like a lure, and using a lure.
so my question is what are the better beaches currently, am I doing anything wrong and is it me just picking the wrong tides and times?

Bad service / attitude from JB Lures Australia
Submitted by longshot on Thu, 2014-07-31 18:50As if Retail business was not tough enough for all, have a look at the response I got when I asked JB Lures for a price on 3 lures and then saying they are out of my budget. ( All 3 were over $100 each unrigged) How not to deal with a possible new customer, who does not own a Million doller house or boat but a trailer boat like most Recreational fisho's.
"G'day Jens, when you build a million dollar home you don't put a cheap Chinese lock on the front door! My lures aren't cheap, neither is the boat or fuel !!
I make and sell over 3,000 lures a year, over 500 lures go to WA every year, why? Because they out fish all the shit that's available over there: Richters, Pakulas, Bonze, Black Bart and all the other mass produced copies that they sell over there. In the past two years JB Lures have won more than USD$2,000,000.00 in the US and approaching $800,000.00 in Australia!!
So you're prepared to waste money on shit lures that'll end up costing you a fortune in fuel? You realise that you're going to miss a lot of bites because they're unproductive.
When you get a bit of common sense about you, get back to me, but the prices might have risen by then.
Cheers, Dave,
JB Lures Australia."

unusual boat trailer problem
Submitted by hezzy on Thu, 2014-07-31 18:39ok
see who can diagnose the issue iv had with the boat trailer for my 4.1 stacer bit of background info
I bought the boat and trailer about 20 months ago ,
it was a bit run down , boat was full of rainwater and had been left out in the weather on a small rural block ,
got it for a good price so all was good,
replaced all anchor rope , fuel tanks , threw out the floor etc
fist time I towed it I noticed it pulled a bit to the right , and tended to vibrate a bit more than usual ,anyway after afull clean up and some strengthening to the break back trailer it improved it , but it was still there
when we measured up the trailer it was out of square,in the main frame and draw bar, slightly warped looked like it may have been rolled at some stage or involved in a bingle
anyway , recently my son built me a new one , all new metal had it galv dipped etc, put all the running gear back on it last sunday new springs and u bolts , old stem post was ok so we re used it , new rollers, new guards , lights , same axle and wheels and rims as they looked ok ,
anyway, the vibration was still there in the trailer when towed , especially bad without the boat on it , but much better with the boat on it
so I started looking at the tyres and rims for the problem , figuring it must be there ?
so give it your best shot , and advise me what you reckon is going on with it , see how good you are in the diagnoses
, I have fixed it , but it took a while
unusual one iv never struck before
