Stella spare spool options

Gday All

Looking at options for a spare spool for a Stella 5000 swb. Not looking for the cheapest but definitely best value.

Should I stick with genuine or look at aftermarket? SOM look to be a very good option aftermarket. Will most likely go between pe2 and pe3, capacity obviously dependent on actual line diameter but not an issue for my fishing.

Any advice on which way to go, where to buy and cost would be a great help. Seems to be endless information on Stella but not so much on specific upgrades/spares etc.

Cheers

Deep drop coral bay

Now I have shared some of my spots with a few lads on here, so I'm hoping for some fishing karma. I'm after some help/1 spot to start me off for a deep fish at coral bay next week. Don't want every spot you have or the best one, just a start.

Cheers boys

Kununarra Winter Barra

Hi guys, heading to Kununarra on Thursday for work and would love to catch a barra if we get time but Ive never fished for them before and have heard the cold water makes it difficult. Is it worth having a crack ? If so iv read that Ivanhoe crossing is a good place to start but are there other areas that are reasonably close and accessible ? Also is braid or mono the go for a small spin set up ? Any info at all would be greatly appreciated and fingers crossed there's a few spare hours off work :D

it was a good day.

Charging boat batteries

Hi all,
I have recently got myself a boat and am wondering how I should keep the batteries charged. How often should I start the engines (Outboards) between trips? I'm a total boating novice so any info on what I need to buy to keep the batteries in shape would be appreciated.
Cheers

How to get the fishing mojo back?

Well, what can I say but over the last year I have lost the fishing mojo - to the point I'm just not that amped about it.  I guess it really comes down to so many years being spoilt in Exmouth and it being so far to go in Karratha (it's not massively far, but an effort compared to Exxy)

Doesn't help that both my boats are out of action either at the moment, ones being fixed and the other needs love and money.

So when you've got into that lull, how have you managed to get yourself out of it?

Monte Bellos trip

A mate of mine (the bushranger look alike in the vid) got cancer a year ago, so a group of us planned a trip to the Monties with Monte Bellos Island safaris (on the Kylin charter boat, staying on a houseboat). We went beginning of July and had an unreal time.

Highlights were great bottom fishing for three days, a super hot mackerel session and a marlin landed by my mate with cancer.

The crew and conditions were great - but it is a long ride - 8 hours at least - from Exmouth. We mainly fished West of Barrow Island (I was surprised how far we went) and played around in the dinghys and jetboat near the houseboat.

If you are considering going this clip shows accurately what to expect, with a lack of surface action (no GT's etc) and a small amount of trolling, but lots of fish. Sharks were an issue, but we moved if they were too bad and we still got plenty of fish. Jigging/ light gear was discouraged due to sharks, but would have been possible to catch fish, landing not so sure.

Video attached if you are interested (8 minutes) - I am no videographer but shows a pretty good trip.

cheers

New bream combo

Hi everyone, I have been saving up for a while now to buy a new bream combo. I'm looking for a mid range outfit of about $120-$150. Currently I'm looking at the alliance 701SPML graphite composite 7'0" 2-4KG, the alliance 1000 spinning reel 5+1 ball bearings 5.5:1 ratio 195yds-4lb mono (I want braid though), and the Berkley fireline exceed 135m 2kg braid. This all comes to $133.95. Any other suggestions?

School Holiday Happiness - Part 2

In my last school holiday post I mentioned that conditions looked good for the last arvo of the school holidays and guess what, they were.  Went into work and dealt with my meetings and got away by 1pm.  YPM was chaffing at the bit to get out there and we had asked a quality fisherman, and good bloke, from the MAAC if he would like to join us.  The north easter was dropping as we headed to the ramp at about 2pm.

A slightly choppy ride out to the grounds meant we arrived around 3pm with plenty of time to sound around and pick a spot.  Out with the newly made burley – this batch works an absolute treat producing a very fine cloud in the water with each log lasting longer than 2 hours.  Off we go.

In what started a quality session, the first fish to the boat, within 10 minutes, was a 50cm Dhu.  This fish was right on the mark but we decided to let him live and do some growing – I don’t see fishing as a harvest and to tell you the truth we throw back a lot more than we keep, and anything that is not more than a few cm over gets returned.  The fishing from this point was very steady with plenty of species to keep us amused as we waited patiently for the “pinking hour”.

The pinking hour is a phrase that I have developed over here for that short period where the pinks come on thick.  It usually corresponds to sun rise or sun set but doesn’t always happen.  It is the period where you need to be on full alert and ready to react because the pinks are very smart fish and will pick up and drop your bait in an instant.  I have found the key to successful pink fishing is to provide a bait that presents naturally that the pink can pick up and run with feeling no resistance until you set the hook.  Anyway, that’s what works for me.

We were lucky enough that the pinking hour happened for us.  We were steadily boating them for a half hour or so and the highlight was when a school obviously moved under the boat and every bait went off at the same time.  In all that excitement we only got one in but it was an experience to remember.

Our evening produced 10 pinks, 2 king george, 3 large (>1m sharks), the 50cm dhu, 3 tarwine, 2 big rays, 2 sargent baker and some skippy, with various other low quality throw backs.  The photo shows what we kept for the night – and we also kept the sb fillets for the bait store.  What a lovely end to the school holidays.  Winter fishing in WA is awesome.

arrive in exxy next monday 28th

anyone else up there then, will be based at yardie creek caravan park for 10 days

School Holiday Happiness

How do you keep your fishing obsessed family, well two of them, amused over the school holidays – go fishing of course.  Our plans of travelling somewhere in this great state to chase piscatorial trophies went to crap because we were too lazy to organise anything properly, and the weather looked a bit dodgy to punt thousands of clams on it being good when you got there.  All there was to it, watch the Perth weather and take a day off when it looked ok.  That was today, although the swell and wind was borderline – and it was quite cold at 6am.

The target for today was to get YPM a good Sambo.  He has been worked by these beasts over the past months but has yet to get a big one to the boat.  He fishes with 30lb braid and the big ones always seem to take 100+m of line and “rock” him on the shallow reefs.  One thing we have learned over the last 6 months is that the big ones fight dirty.

Off to the ramp before dawn, and it is never a good sign that there was only one other trailer there.  We waited till it was light as the swell was still 3m at Rotto and we didn’t fancy taking on the “hole in the wall’ in the dark.  It was fairly spectacular to go “through” in the swell with big waves breaking either side of you.  There was one that looked like it could break in front of us and I was pleased we have a small fast maneuverable boat so we could react and “cross” it in a safe place.  Nothing like a “heart starter” in the morning.

We stopped off at 3 Mile to try the new burley – it worked a treat which is good seeing we have so much of it.  No big pinks unfortunately, but true to form YPM got smashed and busted off on the rocks.  We did however put this one down to a large ray as it really liked the bottom.  The 31cm black arse went back as it was just marginal and deserved to live.  We decided to go out further and try our luck as the swell was well spaced and there was not much chop.

Headed to some “solid” ground in about 30m and fired up the Minn to “hover” over it.  The next few hours were awesome, even though the easterly continued to increase.  The skippy were in plague proportions, and a good size as well.  We probably landed close to 40 with many over a kilo.  We returned every one and YPM commented that, “even though we don’t keep them, it is so much better than catching wrasse and parrot”.  Landing one big one did cause crossed lines though and we needed to take a break as I had to clean up the mess.

YPM decided that watching me incompetently untangle things was quite boring.  He threw down the bigger rig to fish the bottom with a whole snelled mulie whilst I did the work!  Within minutes, he was smashed and there was no doubt this was a big angry fish.  I must say he did really well in what was probably a 20+ minute fight.  There were tangled lines in the water that needed to be cleared through the fight, as well as the need to walk around the boat to keep the “pressure on”.  At last, that big sambo came to the boat and there was one very happy young fella who finally caught his prize.  Weighed, measured and photographs and back he went.

You gotta love it when a kid catches a PB.  He followed up immediately with a nice KG (mum really likes them) and it was time to come in.  It’s good when a plan comes together.  The weather looks ok for the last arvo of the school holidays tomorrow, so guess what!
