Skippers ticket
Submitted by Dundee bill on Sun, 2012-06-10 20:38Hi fellow fishers, just wanted to find out what others thought of the current training required in obtaining your skippers ticket ??
I for one think that the training must be improved as it is just not possible to obtain the skills that are reqiured to take command of a vessel and head out into the deep blue after just a couple of days training. I know that cost will no doubt raise its head should I receive any feed back but you only have to look at recent events over the past couple of years to see that it additional traings is long overdue.
Would you let your son or daughter loose on the roads and drive V8 car that was capable of 200kph after a couple of days training. Food for thought.
How many times have we all seen the boat in front leaving from Hillaries, Ocean Reef, Mindarrie etc on the wrong side and speeding out of the 5k zone and they are not even out of of the marina area, also the same on the way back in.
Should the following topics be included and be mandatory, boat and engine maintenance, radio and communication, basic chart reading , and GPS to name but a few.
Unless the course has changed since I obtained my licence (approx 6 years ago) none of the topics mentioned were covered and when I did mine we were assured that no one would fail, you do not get that promise when you do your car licence and even then there are stipulations upon obtaining your driving licence.
Can you imagine the outcome, you obtain you skippers ticked and you are now free to head out on your first excursion with a coule of mates, the weathers not too bad 15k of wind with 1mtr swell. 3 hours into your fishing trip it turns pear shape, its now blowing 25k of wind and the swell is now on 1.5 and heading up to 2mtr swell and you are 20k from port ??. I have the feeling we have a potential rescue on the cards.
You do not get or gain boating experience after a couple of days training.
What are your thoughts.

Perth winter fishing expectation <5Mile
Submitted by Ninety Mile on Sun, 2012-06-10 17:02Hi All
Looking to do some fishing no more than 5 Mile out from the Perth Coast. What species are common at this time of year? Would prefer to do some bait/soft plastic bottom fishing for Snapper, Dhu's etc. Is this doable this time of year? Any other info would also be appreciated.
Cheers

Tackle hire
Submitted by timwalden on Sun, 2012-06-10 16:59Hi folks,
Im planning on travelling to WA in January to fish theExmouth area. Does anyone know if there is somewhere in Exmouth where you can hire good quality spinning tackle? I want two heavier set ups for chasing big GTs etc and two lighter set ups for a bit of fun. If there's nothing up there, is there anywhere in the Perth area that can do this?
Thanks as always!

Jigging combo
Submitted by AlwaysFishin on Sun, 2012-06-10 16:33So after my first jigging session produced the goods and got me keen, I'm in the market for a good jigging combo. The Stella 10000 has taken my eye, but with the price tag it has me asking the question - is there another reel with similar qualities that I could possibly be looking at? Or should I just bite the bullet and get the Stella?
As for a rod, I'd like one that can handle jig weights from around 80 - 300 grams and around 6'6" - 7'. Looking for a quality setup. Also wanted to know a bit about jigging braid.
Any opinions would be great :)

Abrolhos Islands kayak fishing mothership trip 13 - 15 July
Submitted by Gadsy on Sun, 2012-06-10 16:30Just putting this up for any forum members who may be into kayak fishing and would like the opportunity to come on a weekend mothership trip to the Abrolhos Islands between Friday 13th July to Sunday 15th July on the Island Leader II.
We have approx 8 - 10 free spots at the moment and the cost will be $360 including catering (BYOG).
If anyone is definitely wanting to do such a trip, please let me know.
You will need all the required safety gear as per boating regs applicable to kayaks, although we should be able to share some EPIRBS & radios between groups of fishos.
Should be a great weekend of yak fishing!
Reply here for more details.
Cheers
Gadsy

Mythical Tailor
Submitted by Fossil on Sun, 2012-06-10 12:36Some people seem in doubt that these fish have been caught. While you have to take our word that they were taken from a popular metro location you can't doubt that the fish were landed. If need be I'll even post a pic of the combo I used to land them. The first photo is of my smallest fish for the night, that's a 1.5lt water bottle & an estimated 60cm fish. The second fish is estimated at around 70cm. The last fish I measured at home for 79cm & that's a big sink I've got it sitting over.

Violated by a seal..
Submitted by damon4949 on Sat, 2012-06-09 20:25So this morning I had teed up with a fellow FW member to go out to the Sound to dangle a line but unfortunately his missus' car broke down (hope it gets fixed soon!) and he was unable to make it. Being fairly new to boating it took me a while to decide I was going out by myself. So after MUCH screwing around I managed to be launched and out in the water, I was drifting around squidding when THIS happend.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uLFW6AtgNc&feature=youtu.be
I thought it was cool, up until 10 minutes after I took the video, the seal came back and tried climbing INTO the boat, over the motor well. I won't lie, I was ready to abandon ship haha, but luckily the seal couldn't quite make it in and eventually gave up.
The seal seemed to be around CHASING my squid jigs whenever I had them in the water, I was wondering if this is normal? Makes squidding hard. Haha...
Apart from that minor upset, it was a great day out and ccame home with 9 squid and about 3 cuttlefish which I was pretty rapped with, considering it was my first time catching a squid. One final question though, how the hell do you not get EVERYTHING you own covered in ink!?

Luvius v's Sol v's Sustain 3000
Submitted by roganjosh on Sat, 2012-06-09 08:22Hi everyone
Has anyone got a preference with either of these reels. Want to run 20lb braid. it will be used or some light jigging, might throw it on a longer rod for soft plastics from the shore up north.
Others have suggest the new Caldia, have had a feel, nice but not great. New Sustain looks good but yet to see one.
Any thought would be good

Reel to Match Demon Blood CJ64
Submitted by Stevef on Fri, 2012-06-08 13:06Hi everyone,
Been having a look around for a "general purpose" rod for light PE3 jigging and some SP work. I am leaning strongly towards the Demond Blood CJ64.
As for a reel to match I am thinking the Caldia 4000, Sustain 5000 or the Sargosa 5000.
Anyone have input from their experiences which might help in making the decision.
Cheers Steve

Newbie to Kayak Fly Fishing
Submitted by carps on Fri, 2012-06-08 11:34Hi Guys,
I've just bought myself a you-beaut kayak and i'm interested in trying to target black bream on fly in the Swan/Canning from it. If anyone could share some knowledge on this topic that would be greatly appreciated (flies, places, times, leaders etc etc). I am a super keen kayak fisherman and if anyone would like to join me for a bream session on the kayaks let me know.
Thanks guys,
Rick
