Super Moon last night
Submitted by snapper on Sun, 2012-05-06 16:17Fishing last night was pretty average, as soon as it got dark it seemed like the fish just switched off.
I have just discovered that last night was the brightest night of the year (Super Moon ) dont know if it has anything to do with the poor
fishing but when I was in Jurien at Easter we had a full moon also and the fishing was also below par. Any Astronomers/fishermen out there who can shed some light on this.

Going deep
Submitted by Fraser 5.25 on Sun, 2012-05-06 12:30Just a question to all the boaties that venture into the 100's of metres of water. How did you go about finding your ground? Is there charts that show ground in the deep water or has it been hours of sounding around to come across a pin head on the sea floor? I've got a Fraser 5.25 and often get 40km out from Point Perron but would love to catch some of the whoppers that come up from time to time on the forums. Some of the ground that I fish on has been found by pure luck and if it is this method that is used to come across the deep stuff, then I'll have to take out some jerry cans with me and start looking.
Cheers,
Ken

Credit to Campbells Tackle - Leederville
Submitted by abeldog on Sun, 2012-05-06 11:44Hey Guys,
Just a bit of an update of where Iam at with my fishing at the moment.
After spending four weeks travelling around the North West, I have had a bit of a lay time and getting ready for the Abrolhos in two weeks time.
Exmouth was awesome however you Really have to understand the waters out there and how to fish those drop offs where BIG FISH live.
You have seen some of those fish on my previous post however there were a couple of untold stories.
1 - At 6.30am whilst rigging up at the back of the boat, in a 2-3m swell, heading out to the Murions, passing the Emouth Navy Pier, the boat broached sending me flying into some very dark water.
As I fell out of the boat I took my Shimano T Curve with me. breaking it at the base since it was in the rod holder. The crew were fantastic and had me back in the water in no time however there were a few very scarey moments bobbing up and down in very shark infested waters. "Let not this be the day" I thought.
2. Next day jigging in 80m of water with my Smith 54H and Twinpower 8000 loaded with PE5 drag set at 9kg, I hooked into a big cod, Up it came, down it went, up it came, down it went, rod fully loaded, this went on for 25minutes when I decided to lock up the reel and either bring it up or break the line. Pump & Wind, Drop Knees, Pump & Wind, The cod was comming up more and more, rod loaded, No High Sticking when it exploded below the last bottom runner and 10cm above the hand grip, Busted My Most Loved Rod, Booooo Whoooooooo ( Build a Bridge ).
The rest of the trip went without a hitch apart from catching some very good trout.
On my return I went and saw the boys at Campbells Tackle in Leederville where I buy most of my fishing gear, the Tackleworld Guys are also fantastic sometimes you need to spread the love around as most of them move from shop to shop and from store to manufacturer ( Hey Shane & Willy ). I went through the whole trip, fish by fish, incident by incident.
I explained to the boys what happened with the two rods, James ( assistant manager ) & Nathan ( Manager ) were Unbelievably Fantastic, they said that since I was such a good customer being going there for 32 years, they would replace the T Curve without question & speak to Steve from Smith Austalia ( Australian Agent ).
Thanks Guys and Shimano Australia for your support & understanding.
Nathan & Steve are in discussion regarding my Smith Rod, I will keep you guys posted.
What I learnt from the whole exercise is that if you support local stores and Fishwrecked sponsors, you might just be pleasantly surprised, as I was, when things go south.
Cheers

Darwin Charter - What to chase???
Submitted by mw87 on Sat, 2012-05-05 21:20Hi all,
Heading up to Darwin for the first time in 2 weeks and after searching through previous posts I have spotted a few recommended charters to go out with. The dilemma is we only have time to do one day trip before heading home and are undecided on weather to go for Black Jew offshore or Barra in the creeks... Not a bad dilemma to have thats for sure!
It seems the end of the wet season is pretty good for Barra, so maybe around now? And not sure on the Jews...
Any opinions on what would be the better choice for this time of year to help make our minds up and make the most of our trip..?
Cheers!

Do Rays Take Lures?
Submitted by ealzee on Sat, 2012-05-05 20:17Weirdest thing happened to me today whilst cast hardbodies around the Canning flats. Something grabbed and pulled my lure taking almost a full spool of me before i got it to slow down and slowly turn around on 4lb fireline then spitting my lure back. There was no headshakes and it had me stationary for a while too.
Have you heard of rays taking lures??? I'm sure this must of been a small ray.

Buying Bulk Bait. Where?
Submitted by Bungel on Sat, 2012-05-05 15:12Heading to Exmouth and beyond in July from Perth.
I would like to get sorted a few 20ltr buckets of squid and Muilies for salting up.
Anyone know of some places to get into the good baits in bulk.
Might end up being better to find somewhere in Geraldton that would be the best.
Any ideas, would prefer to find somewhere in Perth so i can get it sorted now.
Cheers,
George.

Fish Identification
Submitted by Crikko on Sat, 2012-05-05 07:19Hello there.
I was out beach fishing on Wednesday off Bunbury near BP, and got a few of these fish I'd not seen before, and unfortunately didn't get a photo.
It was about the size and shape of a herring, but had a spikey dorsal fin (that got me in the finger which wasn't plesant). It had three brown stripes down it that looked like someone had taken three fingers and painted them on, but other than that was just a silver color. I've seen the photo's on the 'pedia, and the closest thing was the Robinson Sea Bream (obviously not that this far south though).
Any ideas what I was catching?

Have plenty of lures and gear literally spent thousands at the tackle store last time I was up.is september a reasonable chance for spango's off the shore? Anyway if anyone could help id be most gratefull, if anyone lives there local they are welcome to get intouch with me on here when im up there if they like to join me for a fish :)

Reel for Jigging Master PE 4-8
Submitted by Cameron71 on Fri, 2012-05-04 10:31Hi All,
My Jigging master OH PE 4-8 currently has a Torsa 20 on it but I am looking for similar grunt with less weight. I do a tiny bit of jigging and mostly just bottom bashing.
I am thinking of a Jigging Master PE 3 reel (I have 45lb braid from Paulus that snaps at 78lb so will get plenty on) or a saltiga.
Does anyone have a view on these two reels or suggestions as to what I could use?
Anyone want to buy a Torsa 20?
Cam

Deckie needed for J bay trip sunday
Submitted by grayzeee on Fri, 2012-05-04 10:16hey fella's
(provided winds look the goods) I need a deckie for a Jurien run on sunday , to join me and 1 other.
trolling and jigging mainly.
you need to be at my place in mullaloo for 4am depart.
usual rules - you get a lift up and back obviously. bring own gear .
budget for around $120 (prob less)
any catch is shared.
I have no spots at all, but the intention is to troll close in for a bit , and then head out to second bank. hopefully find a few.
helpful if you're into your jigging and you've fished the area before.
PM me if keen.
