Boat license increase with third party insurance cover
Submitted by Spicey on Thu, 2011-05-26 11:07I heard on the radio this morning a push by the victim of a boating accident back in 2007 for the state govenment to include third party insurance cover in boat license fees. That would raise the cost of licensing a boat by at least $250 - $300 per year.
This girl was involved in a boating accident late at night with the driver of the boat being drunk and hitting an unlit navigation marker on the Canning river after a party. She ended up in a coma for 2 weeks and has had medical bills of over $300,000 along with the lasting impact on her life. Unlike if this was a motor vehicle accident she has no insurance to claim against and could only take legal action against the driver of the boat whom she said that she only met that night when offered a lift home with friends. She claimed that she had not seen him at all that night at the party and was not awhare that he was drunk. She is unable to pursue legal action against him as it has been deemed that he has no assets. The boat was owned by his father. No form of compensation has been offered by the family or driver to the girl to help with medical bills.
I am a boat owner and feel for the girl who has suffered here but I am not sure how I feel about yet another increase in fees. While it would be good to see this girl have the avenue to claim her medical expenses, are there enough accidents to warrant all boat owners having to pay an insurance premium in their license fee or is it up to all idividuals to take repsonsibility for themselves when riding in a boat and make a judgment about the skipper who has ultimate responsiniblty for all on board.
Just thought I would raise this to get other opinions on this matter.

Jack's Back.
Submitted by Howard George on Thu, 2011-05-26 08:55This morning on ABC regional radio out of Bunbury rec-fisher Jack Jennings of Windy Harbour fame is again on air complaining about the fish stocks in his area and the commonwealth proposed closure. The talk back number 1300545222 or SMS 0448922604. I noticed some postings on this site regarding the Donnelly Banks so I mention it so you can have some input.

The dreaded N wind.
Submitted by terboz123 on Thu, 2011-05-26 08:52Hey team.
Im curious to know how many fishwrecked users refuse to fish in the northerly winds. You always hear the saying that the fish dont bite on a northerly etc etc. With saturday looking so good wind wise, i was keen on heading out chasing bottom fish but the winds are NE to N to NW by the arvo.....Regardless of what everyone says, ill still go, but very curious to hear peoples responses on this.

Coral Bay last week of June, first week of July- anyone else there??
Submitted by hunterdive on Wed, 2011-05-25 18:41hi guys,
We're heading up north again for a couple of weeks, taking the tinny this time, big boat is staying home. I've got a new born so I won't be fishing hard every day, but definatley going to get out. Its a pretty capable little boat, been out 6 or so km back of the reef in the right conditions.
Is anyone else there last week in June through to July 11, I'd be interested in a decky spot with anyone heading out wide.

Submitted by Jeffree on Wed, 2011-05-25 15:37i just bought a stradic 1000 and spooled it with 4lb fireline.
what would be the biggest fish i could get away with landing on that reel. im using a 3-6lb graphite rod.
i just wanted to go super light weight on some mulloway.
i found a spot where i've been catching soapies almost everynight around 3-5kg for the past week, and bought this rod and reel just for that purpose. u guys reckon im just gunna get spooled and loose 30 buks worth of line or u reckon the combo will be ok?

i have 2x tailors and a flounder.

Montebello's Tackle?
Submitted by cobrico on Wed, 2011-05-25 06:11Hi Guys, I'm heading to the Montebello Islands in a couple of months and was wondering if anyone could advise me on what to take in the form of Stickbaits, Poppers, Soft PLastics, best sizes and brands and jig head weights would be most appreciated. Looking at taking some jigs as well but have never tried this before, is there a rule of thumb to what size assist hooks you use for certain size or weight jigs? Any feedback would be much appreciated.

Red throat emperor off Rotto
Submitted by wagyl on Tue, 2011-05-24 16:47Went out today off Rotto in a strong easterly with a stong current running to the north and went to a 60m spot. Caught two dhuies, returned one, plus a size red throat emperor. I took a photo with my phone but have no idea how to post it. Haven't seen that before. Next week I'm going out to get some coral trout and red emperor, what's the chances?

Montes tips
Submitted by bryn newton on Tue, 2011-05-24 15:56Hi all.
Have booked my holidays and we are now officially off to karratha for 2 weeks starting the 25th of July! Staying at a mates in karratha and if the weather is kind we are hopefully going to venture out and explore the Montes! Cant wait!
Been doing a fair bit of reading from the old forums, magazines etc etc and seems like there is alot of valuable info and knowledgable people out there. Im fairly inexperienced in up north fishing, especially popping but into everything from trolling, jigging, plastics, hard bodies, and bottom bouncing and love to get wet have a bit of a dive.
So really just chasing any little tips or hints in regards to areas to target, good camping areas, must haves or things we wont need, not chasing specifics just ideas.... or any good stories to get me pumped up for the trip!
my mate has a 7m glass cat and considering towing a small tinny across for exploring the shallows n to save on precious petrol, most likely launch at fortescue.
Thanks in advance
Bryn

Hi all,
I have just joined fishwrecked and recently moved to WA. I'm looking forward to reading everyone’s posts! This weekend I will be heading up to Guilderton. I was wondering if anyone could please point me in the right direction for that area. Beach or river information ( bait or lure) would be greatly appreciated. Hopefully to get onto some Tailor, Bream or Mullaway!

Kimberley catches significant Fisheries funding in State Budget
Submitted by bod on Mon, 2011-05-23 23:04State Budget 2011-12: Building the State - Kimberley catches significant funding allocation for fisheries
The Kimberley region has netted significant funding for Department of Fisheries managed projects - with the department receiving an allocation of $2.3million to deliver its part of the Kimberley Science and Conservation Strategy.
Fisheries Minister Norman Moore said the money would enhance the department’s compliance capability in the Eighty Mile Beach Marine Park between Port Hedland and Broome.
“The State Government will invest in projects that will build the Kimberley region and ensure a sustainable future for our marine and freshwater ecosystems,” Mr Moore said.
“The funding will allow two extra fisheries and marine officers in the region.”
The Minister said there was also funding in the coming four years to develop a number of fishing initiatives, including an education program and stock enhancements.
Mr Moore said $1.1million during the next four years would support a Kimberley marine education program for recreational fishers and charter operators.
“Tourism WA and the Department of Environment and Conservation will undertake this program in a partnership,” he said.
“Recreational fishing in the Kimberley will also benefit from $695,000 set aside in the Budget and forward estimates, to allow the stocking of barramundi in Lake Kununurra.
“It is important to explore the opportunities that fish enhancement projects can deliver to recreational fishing, including the possibility of creating new inland fisheries.”

Bream Fishing Gear
Submitted by dikfeld on Mon, 2011-05-23 16:26Hi everybody,
I'm new to the forums but have looked through and seen some posts already on what i'm going to ask but just thought id start a new thread to see what people think again.
I'm trying to decide what reel I need to get to go with the rod I just bought to do some River/Bream fishing. I've never fished for Bream before so would like some insight on what would be the best suited gear. I went ahead and bought a rod spur of the moment, bought a 5'6" Shimano Sahara Graphite Rod 2-4kg so very light weight in the hope I will feel the bites better. I want some help deciding which reel to chose and what size reel. I've been looking at the Shimano Siennas and the Shimano Sahara reels which from research seem to be pretty good (can't really tell the difference between them except the price) but was wondering what size I should get.
Considering I got a very light rod I was thinking of the 1000 but on researching a few threads I can't decide whether its better to go with the 1000 or get something a little bigger like the 2500. What is the actual difference between say the 1000, 2500 and 4000 size reels? Is it just the size of the reel and the line capacity or do the larger reels cope better with heavier line?
Just to note I normally just do bottom fishing with a shimano tekota 800 so all this lighter gear is new to me.

Trolling at Jurien
Submitted by bradz on Mon, 2011-05-23 14:26Iam heading up to Jurien on the June long weekend and intend trolling along the back of the reef and in between fishing spots.
Would I be best trolling with minnows or small skirted lures? Targeting tuna and spaniards...if they are still around.
Any thoughts
Brad
