a right fishy tale
Submitted by bod on Sun, 2011-05-29 00:59The ultimate fisherman's tale - 10 year-old reels in an alligator
A smile is guaranteed to wash over the face of even the most jaded angler when he thinks he has hooked a minnow but his catch turns out to be a monster.
But imagine the expression on young Michael Dasher's when he reeled what he thought would be a fairly big fish only to find that he'd hooked a 4ft alligator - or a 5ft 9in alligator if you believe the fishy tale told later.
We will never know quite how the 10-year-old reacted when the beast emerged from the water, but what is known is that once it was on dry land he promptly wrestled it to the ground and slung over his shoulder.
He then marched it off to impress his grandfather and the rest of his family, fearing they would dismiss the story as a flight of fancy.
'When it came through the water and slapped him in the face with its tail ... his two friends ran, but Michael wouldn't be normal like that. He went after it ... taped up its mouth and brought it half a mile home,' his mother Tonya Dasher, 33, told The Times.
The alligator got its rude awakening during an after-school fishing trip in Rockledge, Florida.
Mrs Dasher said that one of the Sunshine state's Fish and Wildlife Commission officers who went to her house with sheriff's deputies told her that he had measured the alligator at 5ft 9in. But Lenny Salberg, a spokesman for the commission, said that the officer's official notes had recorded it at 4ft.
'I think it just kept growing, which seems to happens with fishing stories,' Mr Salberg said.
Mr Cox, 57, said of his grandson: 'He ain't scared of nothin. Nothing.'
The alligator was later released. Tampering with wildlife is an offence punishable in Florida by a $500 fine and up to 60 days in jail, and Michael received a stern warning, said Mr Salberg, adding: 'He knows now that we don't mess with alligators. The next time, he'll run.'

New boat
Submitted by whipasswaverunner on Sat, 2011-05-28 21:28Hi all, I took my new boat out for a run today. It's a Seafarer Victory 6m. I know the guy that owned it and he really looks after his stuff, as you can see by the photos. It has a 2005, 200 hp optimax, and it goes awesome, does 43 knots. It is really stable at rest and a brilliant ride, and a heap of deck space.
P.S. Anyone else on here have a Seafarer Victory?
Cheers

Shletered ocean yak spots
Submitted by buschy on Sat, 2011-05-28 19:59Well. Simmo Ryan, Shawcatch and half a dozen other mates are currently out somewhere near the Abrohlos Islands chasing a stickface, dining on crays and drinking copious amounts of the amber nectar. As I had to miss out (grrr) I am going on my first landbased expedition (sigh) for some time next weekend.
Thanks to Roberta's report I may give my usual haunt north of Leeman a miss and am forced to stay this side of Leeman due to fuel costs and a very stretched budget.
I'll have a yak (if you could call it that). It's a surfski, with a replaced nose cone and a plastic rod holder. Will be my first time out in it so I'm looking for suggestions for some sheltered spots to setup camp and go for a paddle and chase some whiting / squid.
Away from the crowd is a bonus (if possible on a long weekend) and have a 4x4 so happy to go anywhere.
Will definately spend the second night at Hill River so if it is in that general area that would be a bonus.
Cheers,
Buschy

New car advice?
Submitted by wazzbat on Sat, 2011-05-28 16:41Sorry if this post upsets anyone not quite being fishing related but:
The missus wants a new SUV style car/awd so was wondering if anyone had any experiences with the Nissan Murano, Mazda CX-7, Subaru Tribeca or Ford Territory? We are leaning towards the Murano? Will have to be able to tow a 19ft Glass boat.
Hopefully once the deal is done, I will be closer to getting my own boat.

New to jigging
Submitted by sammy85 on Fri, 2011-05-27 19:25Hey guys I am pretty new to jogging but very keen to catch fish by artificial instead of baits. Went out jogging yesterday for the first time really behind the 3 mile. I am not really phased that I didn't catch anything but more curious if I was doing it right. I first used a gillies octa jig and jogged it very slowly up and down then changed over to a knife jig on my pe 3 gear (shimano jigwrex pe3 and shimano acceration 6000)I don't know if it was the drift which was very fast or me doing the wrong action but it didn't jig right. It felt like every time I jigged up there was a heap of slack on the way down. I watch heaps of fishing shows as this all I have to go by I was hoping someone could give me some pointers. Thanks guys much aooreciates

HDS upgrade
Submitted by crano on Fri, 2011-05-27 16:46I went out for a fish after upgrading my HDS7 to version 4 software. It now redraws chart screens much faster and it seems to bootup a bit quicker.
The main improvement is the sonar. In the past as soon as I went over around 1400 rpm I would have problems with electrical interference and I was forever adjusting the gain for different speeds. All that seems to be sorted out now as the interference is gone and I can pretty much leave the gain setting the same for drifting and travelling.I found I had to run the gain about 10% higher than I used to.
If you have an HDS it is well worth doing the upgrade.

Barrow Island
Submitted by Lucky Tim on Thu, 2011-05-26 20:49Ahoy!
You would think that with the amount of marine parks around nowadays that maps and info would be easy to find but they sure aren't. I remeber the first time Brad and I went to the Montes, it took hours of surfing and emails just to get a copy of the marine park map and now I'm having the same difficulties with a map of Barrow Island.
Can anyone help please?
Cheers

Submitted by Lucky Tim on Thu, 2011-05-26 19:08Out of those who've been to Thevenard Island, can you fuel up the boat there? If so, do you have to be a guest staying or can anyone rock up and fill up? How much per litre more than the mainland?
Cheers.

walpole query
Submitted by scottbec on Thu, 2011-05-26 16:48hi guys,
I have done quite a few searches and read lots of great reports and seen lots of pics about walpole - but I have just one query about boat access. I have been up and around the Walpole and Nornalup inlets a few times, but only in a small dinghy or on a jet ski. I am hoping to be there in a few weeks, for the long wknd, and was hoping to bring our 5m trailcraft to chase some bream. do you guys think I will have issues with getting up and around the rivers and through the inlets in it??
If anyone has any thoughts or tips it would be appreciated.
feel free to PM me your secret spots if you dont want to post them on the page - haha!! :)
cheers,
Scott

Parliaqment containing 10000 signatures opposing proposed Marine Parks in NSW and the signatures are not only from fishermen but from business's in local communities and tourist operators as well. Is there enough support within Western Australia to do something similar so that the Feds. get a clear message. Maybe Website's like this one can put together an online petition that we can sign. What do you think?
