Coral Bay Trip & BBQ
Submitted by teto on Sat, 2011-04-02 10:40Hi All,
Would like to share my very interesting trip to coral bay recently. A couple of mates & I fished CB for three days with a nice mixed bag of emperors & tried our luck for a marlin. Majority of the trip was dedicated to bottom bashing with a little bit of trolling between spots, we only trolled for a 4 -5 hrs for the whole trip and managed to raise 5 marlin, hooked three & got one to the boat as well as a nice little dolly. So needless to say we were pretty happy with our efforts as none of us had fished CB before and are keen to go back there and spend more time dragging skirts around.
Now this is where the trip got interesting, on the way back to home we were about 150klms south of Carnarvon when I noticed that there was smoke coming out from the rear of the car, we pulled over and found that there was diesel gushing from the rear of the engine and then as my mate said, that is least of your worries as it is on fire, SHIT, raced to the boat to get the fire extinguisher to find that it was missing, so grabbed all the water we had & tried to fight the fire with no success. Time to make the call, get what possessions we could out of the car & get the boat off before we had more dramas on our hands. So to cut a really long story short a 12hr trip turned into 21hr journey of hitching rides in road trains & people that just wanted to help.
I must thank the two guys that pulled up to give us hand & tow my boat to Wooramel roadhouse after unhitching their boat & doing a 90klm round trip.

Want to improve your casting distances and accuracy?
Submitted by TerryF on Sat, 2011-04-02 08:53Sunday 3 April
Want to improve your casting distances and accuracy?
Can you cast over 100 metres? You can do it easily with help from us. We had a junior who set casting records of 100 metres for 112 gram, and 97 metres for 56 gram when he was only 12. And he was not big for his age. Some adults regularly cast over 150 metres.
People who would like to see how it is possible to cast such long distances, how to cast accurately, and get some tips and tutition can come to the Surf Casting and Angling Club's dry casting day on Sunday 3 April.
Where:- Yokine Reserve, Wordsworth Avenue, Yokine. Competition starts at 8:30am, but club members are there from around 7:30am onwards for setup and practice.
Dry Casting is long distance casting and accuracy casting on a grassed area, where the distances and the accuracy can be measured.
We've all met the difficult situations where the water is rough, the wind is strong in your face or coming from one side, you need to land the sinker in a sand hole near reefs, cast a bait in front of a school of fish, avoid tangling with the person next to you, the person next to you is casting a bit further and catching all the fish, and so on. With the right gear and skills, you can fish almost anywhere and in almost any conditions.
You don't need any special gear to start dry casting. Many people use their regular fishing gear, particularly for the accuracy casting.
We can show you how to get the best out of your own fishing gear if you would like to bring it along. We can give advice on different rods and reels and show how these can go together, and also let you try out casting with different rod and reel combinations to find one that suits your fishing needs and your size and physical strength. This is important for the ladies and juniors, and those of us who aren't as young as we used to be, or for people who are struggling to cast the distances they want to.
Our visitors always get a lot of useful and practical tips, and often add 10 to 30 metres to their casts on the first day - and, no, we don't catch many fish at drycasting, but those skills certainly help when we go fishing.
After the competition and the lessons for the visitors, we get together over a sausage sizzle and soft drinks, and talk about anything to do with fishing and casting.
The Club has an airconditioned house in Kalbarri available for rent to public and members. Club members get a big discount on rates paid by the public. http://www.surfcasters.iinet.net.au/KalbarriHouseMain.html

Mackeral tips.
Submitted by danno on Fri, 2011-04-01 21:20Hey all.
Ive been meaning to go for a troll all summer but never found the time so i think im to late but just wondering what lb leader i should be running to my wire?
Also which knot is the best for this, ive tryed the albright but its to bulky to go through the guides. Ive got a TLD 20 and a TLD 25 both with 30lb mono for trolling and two boxes of halcos 190dd, 160d, and a couple of 190xdd. Should i run a Xdd and a normal dd? or the shallower ones and a deep??
Ive heard that there is still mackies hanging around but how long do you guys expect them to hang around for? I will be trolling for them out from ocean reef around the 3mile. I read that 27m is a good starting point but what is a good range for mackies to be in?
With the halco lures does anyone change the standard trebles off their lures?
Whats the ideal trolling speed for them also? is 8knots a good speed?
Cheers Danno.
These are the lures i have.

Good luck to all attending, if you dont live there then have a safe journey there & back & i hope the weather gods are good to ya. Good luck.

new moves to limit number of rods per boat
Submitted by Tony Halliday on Fri, 2011-04-01 08:02our dear friends at Fisheries research have done it again!![]()
moves are a foot to leglay allow one rod per anlger on a boat, limiting the number of lines that can be trolled or fished.
That means if my son and I go out, we can only have a small rod for him and I have to choose if I'm taking a trolling, bottom bounce or jigging rod.
At this rate will we be allowed hooks on lines by the end of the year..
i'm very pissed off at this!!!

What fish??
Submitted by MrMulloway on Thu, 2011-03-31 23:09A few months ago it was stormy weather and i was in east freo on a rock groyne. I looked to the side of a rock groyne and there was a school of fish that looked like herring darting past being chased by a school of fish that looked exactly like a spanish mackeral and around the same size, what could this be?

Metro Macks - at what price?
Submitted by buschy on Thu, 2011-03-31 20:09Hi all,
I'm one of the unfortunate few not lucky enough to have access to a boat at this magical time when water temperates are up and the pelagics are running in metro waters. Being relatively new to fishing I don't know if this has happened in recent years or if the warm waters are a bit of a fluke event.
I'm just curious as to whether warm waters at this time of year will have an impact on our winter fishing? Keen to hear your thoughts purely from a learning angle.
Cheers,
Buschy

metro macks
Submitted by uncle on Thu, 2011-03-31 14:55Mladin and I had a go off the north reefs today, strange day, very windy early, heaps of crappy weed. we had a double hookup on shark macks, they went berserk in the wind slop and spat the lures close to the boat, landed a spanish mack and 2 spotty macks[released],then it calmed down and was bright and no more strikes, trolled around for a while and got sick of clearing lines so came home, there was alot of late starters and it will be interesting to see how they went

Oh oh! Cyclone + FW Exxy Comp = Not cool!!!
Submitted by wazzbat on Thu, 2011-03-31 14:00Oh oh. Not looking too good for the FW Exmouth Comp guys and girls. I'm heading up to Coral Bay on Sunday for a week and it looks like the weather could be a bit nasty looking on the BOM website. Tropical low maybe forming into cat 1 cyclone by tomorrow. Hopefully it fizzles out to nothing or at least hopefully for the comp, it has been and gone by next weekend. This is my first time to Coral Bay too
.
Everyone better keep their fingers crossed.

Another Exxy boat ramp question - bog mats needed?
Submitted by dkonig82 on Thu, 2011-03-31 12:35Off to Exxy in 3 weeks.
Ill be launching a 5.5m glass boat at Tantas and Bundegi.
I have never been up there before, do people think anti bog mats are adviseable?
If so, has anyone had experience with these?
They dont look as good as the MaxTrax, but they are sure a hell of a lot cheaper.

Teaser for Exmouth
Submitted by Tandawg on Thu, 2011-03-31 09:43Hi all, I am going up to Exmouth in late April and was wondering if some fishos can give me some advice on teasers. I do intend to troll for mackies and maybe head to deeper depths for billfish.
Do you use that angled block of wood with reflective sides? I presume something like this needs to have a weighted nose to stay below the surface and troll accordingly. I have heard of the long chain of rubber squids and broken CD's.
I have the fishing gear but these are things I have overlooked.
Thanks in anticipation
Chris

Lets Get Tony Abbott Over Here
Submitted by Howard George on Thu, 2011-03-31 04:06At the last Federal Election Tony Abbott went to Mackay in Queensland and announced that if he got elected the decision making process for Marine Parks would be restructured so there was more local involvement and within days his popularity jumped past Julia Gillard so lets get him over here to listen to what we have to say. It can't be that hard and it's not like he wouldn't have anything to say with Mining Tax , Boat people and detention centres along with GST all on the agenda. I'll run it past the Member for Forrest Nola Marino to test the water and maybe you guys in metro can lobby for the same thing with your Federal Members. It's worth a go. from memory the reasons why he wanted to restructure the MPA was the negative impact that marine parks have on local economies.
