WA's freshwater fish data now available on internet
Submitted by bod on Tue, 2010-06-29 12:24The database supporting the website will allow a strategic overview, for the future management of freshwater finfish and invertebrates in WA and help inform conservation, rehabilitation and restocking programs to preserve fish fauna and control feral species.
Jointly funded by Fisheries and WA’s Natural Resource Management office, the website provides a valuable State repository for distribution data, on native and introduced species, collected by various Government agencies, universities and research organisations.
Principal Freshwater Fish Research Scientist, Dr Craig Lawrence said until now there had not been a single resource available to store and permit people to view this collated data.
“To get it up and running we have worked with other departments and universities to capture and consolidate all available information and the database and website will continue to grow and develop as new research data is added,” Dr Lawrence said.
“It is exciting that future research will not only help update data, but to fill knowledge gaps.”
Dr Lawrence said website users could browse by species or region or use the map navigation function to find out more about the distribution of various freshwater species.
“We have sourced all accessible information and hope the benefits our database and website provide will encourage any researchers with any existing distributional data, not already captured, to contribute this data to further enhance the information,” he said.
“The Department of Fisheries has responsibility for management of fish resources in Western Australia.
“This website will benefit the State by improving public awareness and appreciation for native freshwater fish and crustaceans and their habitats in local waterways. It will also enable tracking of the spatial and temporal distribution of the populations of both native and feral species.
“Creation of the database that underpins the website will improve data management, record keeping standards, data accessibility and collaboration between research institutions and government departments.”
More details are available online at http://freshwater.fish.wa.gov.au/

Want this bait gone
Submitted by Corza on Tue, 2010-06-29 10:33If anyones heading out from Hillary's,o'reef or mindarie this week, call in ( off hepbuern Ave)
Since I sold my boat fishing has taken a back seat as such, except to flicking some lures when I go down south.
Anyway I have some Squid packs, occy, pillies and some whole whiting I used to trail, to get out of my freezer.
So if you want some free bait (or an extra deckie) Let me know, this bait is sitting there going no where fast. I just won't throw it out... ((( i ALSO HAVE A HEAP OF TUNA HEADS IF ANYONE WANTS THEM FOR CRABBING))))
Cheers, Corza.

Metro Fish , all Fished out ~!??
Submitted by DhuBoi on Sun, 2010-06-27 20:43Lately fishing the metro area out wide has been quite dissapointing on many levels , lots of under size fish , no large fish and not a decent feed for a while.Im beginning to think metro waters are completly fished out , finding myself going deeper and deeper for a feed. Latly past three trips out have been Sad, with only 1 dhuie sized , 3 or 4 black arse n some skippy. The rest have been under size fish of dhuies, pink snapper.and sambos lots of them. Anyone else having any troubles? i fish from point perron out wide from garden island and rotto . i dont think im doing anything wrong but tips or info would be great ha. or is the area just fished out or polluted. Seems all the fish are NORTH of perth :) Hillaries upwards lol .

Last spot for July abrolhos trip
Submitted by hlokk on Sun, 2010-06-27 12:28Well, my last Abrolhos trip for the year is coming up next weekend and theres still one lucky last spot available. Will make it three times this year (plus a turtle dove trip) so that should tell you just how awesome the trip and the fishing is.
We'll be fishing from the 2-5th of July, so thats 4 days fishing (we usually start at dawn and get back a mooring point an hour or so before sunset, but sometimes fish later). Max 8 people on boat, all meals, drinks, bait, accom, etc included. Nothing to bring except clothes/sleeping bag/pillow any any alcohol. Will need to double check with cost, as adding an extra person should reduce it for all (so should be $1350 but will confirm).
For those that dont know much about it, or havent read my previous reports, the Abrolhos islands must be one of the fishiest areas in WA (at least in terms of actually catching the fish :p). We usually fish shallower ground between 10-30m so we're usually breaking out the jigs, and softplastics. Pretty awesome to see the bottom while fishing some lightly weighted plastics before it gets smashed (including a 10kg dhuie in 10m of water last year) Not to mention the baitschools being smashed by all kinds of fish and furiously casting lures into the chaos, as well as trolling up a few mackies.
It must be saying something about the area when the most common fish caught are dhuies, pinkies, spanglies, coral trout and baldies
Not to mention, that theres practically no wrasse or other crap fish :p.
So, if you want to get on what will be an awesome trip, get in quick before the spot disappears.

Off shore reef info?
Submitted by Hairyone on Sun, 2010-06-27 09:46Gday,
Many years ago in South Australia I saw a book showing favourite fishing spots around South Australia.
It listed off shore reefs, (artificial and natural), jetties, rock and beach fishing. It had maps how to get there (GPS coordinates for reefs) and an idea of what you might catch. It also recommended rigs, hooks and baits.
Does any thing like this exists for WA?
Any info would be appreciated.
Cheers

ansa
Submitted by allrounder on Sat, 2010-06-26 07:59Last night i caught up with a few well known fishing identities(some are famous around perth if you ask them lol)Over a few drinks it was bought up that they may be starting an Ansa club and firing back up tagging programs and records ect. Many years ago i was a member and then the president of the now gone Northern Suburbs Sport Fishing Club.It was a great place to catch up and meet new people. We had all kinds of anglers from landbased to bluewater marlin and fad fishing.I was wondering if anyone would be interested in joining a club if it gets up and running.

Squidding at Hillarys this afternoon
Submitted by ledge64 on Fri, 2010-06-25 21:11Such a great afternoon after work decided to test my new Yo-Zuri jigs down Hillarys rocks, the ocean was flat as and the tide was really low with a full moon rising, never had one hit and stacks of blowies following the jig, my query is was it due to the conditions I was not catching squid and with the blowies chasing the jig does that mean the jig is working well?

trolling tips
Submitted by danno on Fri, 2010-06-25 19:59hey all.
just a few questions that i would like to know bout what to use for trolling metro waters.
1. what knot do u guys tie from main line to leader? im using 15kg mono main line and mayb 100-150 lb leader. i tryed the albright but it was to bulky to go throught the guides with ease. should i just use a swivel to the leader?
2. if you use wire what type do u use? ive heard of single strand but i havent seen it so is there another one thats good?
3.i saw some clips from halco that i think a few people use. does anyone use them? and are they good?
ummm
yer i think thats all for now if i think of more ill add it.
cheers danno

Where to buy bait - Hillarys
Submitted by Snags on Fri, 2010-06-25 18:07Hey,
Might go for a fish Sunday morning @ Hillarys after having breakfast there.
I dont want to bring bait with me incase we stay for a while @ breaky.
What places sell bait close or at Hillarys marina? Obviously open on Sundays. Is there a bait/tackle shop actually at the marina?
While we're on topic, also keen to know of any after-hours (servos) close to that area. I dont usually drive pass any servos when i drive up that way.
Any feedback appreciated.
Cheers,
Alex.
