Ghost of the Alkimos
Submitted by Indiana on Thu, 2010-07-08 09:02Guys & Girls
Probably all who frequent this web site would have heard , seen ,fished or dived near the wreck of the Alkimos.
I wonder how much people know about it's History and its journey over the years before being wrecked on our coast .
The ship had a very checkered past and those interested in superstition and myth's should have a read of a book on the subject
written by the late Jack Wong Sue , " Ghost of the Alkimos ".
For those that dont know Jack Sue ,he was a member of Z Force during the second world war and operated behind enemy lines
in Borneo . Jacks love during peace time was diving and he owned a dive store in Midland ( I think ).
Anyway I think you may be able to still souce this book ..........its a great read ,and will certainly question your belief in the unknown .
Enjoy !

Daiwa Heartland surf
Submitted by JakeB on Wed, 2010-07-07 22:31Hey guys, does anyone know who stocks the Daiwa Heartland surf rods? I'd like to check out the heavy model. Also how do these compare with the Daiwa sensor surf 12ft med/heavy spin? they are both rated 2 to 4oz casting weights. The rod would be used for tailor and school mulloway, with 3oz sinker plus bait... eg pilchard or small fillet baits.. Also if anyone has experience with the Xzoga Mastery 12ft feel free to comment. Budget for the rod is under $300. Thanks in advance..

I know years ago I had a t shirt that I seemed to be wearing in every photo taken with a fish, I was gutted when it finally fell to pieces, was my lucky shirt...

Dawesville Cut Report
Submitted by Davy_G on Wed, 2010-07-07 20:14hi guys
went down to the cut today and fished with my uncle,
we got 11 fish, 7 gars and 4 herring, could have got more but the morning shift had filled them up, they were chockers with burley!
I ended up only getting one herring as i was using placcies, God it was annoying! bloody herring taking it, dropping it, taking it, dropping it.
anyone got any tips on how to convert hits to hookups when using 3' minnows?

Snapping Braid
Submitted by just dhu it on Wed, 2010-07-07 20:10I have had problems over the past few years when fishing with braid, when i get snagged up i try several times to pull it off then i try whip the tip to try to release it from the snag , most times the braid snaps up near the surface, or occasionaly snaps above my 2 mt double, snapping down the bottom i cant be sure that the double may have snagged but up on the surface is annoying especially when your in 60 mts. i have had the problem on several different rods and lines which i have changed to ensure its not damaged and mostly on 15,20 25 kg braid ????

Fishing around Wyndham and the Mitchell Plateau Advice
Submitted by sarcasm0 on Wed, 2010-07-07 17:32My parents are heading up to do the canning stock route from South to North and will be spending some time after around Wyndham and the Mitchell Plateau. My father can fish and wanted a rod and reel to take for when he reaches water. A friend is loaning me a 8' Graphite 8-20lbs rod and I am hoping to pair it up with a 4000 size reel, perhaps a shimano symetre and 16lbs braid. Dad doesnt want to catch monster fish, maybe just trevs and trout off the rocks/shore because they cant use huge fish, they want something they can eat and not waste. So, does anyone have any spots or advice? I think because he doesnt want to worry about bait I reckon lures up to 40gm are the go. So I was hoping to be able to send him up with a few halco twisties, x-rap slashbaits and some poppers, maybe a richter plug style lure too? What is reasonable leader lbs and terminal gear?
Any help would be appreciated!

Exmouth Jigging
Submitted by Stevef on Wed, 2010-07-07 14:05Hi,
Me and some mates are heading up to Exmouth next weekend and we will be keen to try out some light (PE2 / PE3) jigging while up there.
I am a little worried about mackies, sharks etc biting off either the jig or the assist hooks................I have thought about a short wire trace, but I am not sure if this will result in spooked fish.
Has anyone had experience jigging in the area and maybe they have some tips about "tooth proofing" their jigs.
Cheers Steve

todays fish.
Submitted by danno on Tue, 2010-07-06 19:02hey all.
just writing about the trip i did today out from ocean reef. the water was great all day little wind and low swell.
started at 7.30ish got to the ramp launched and went out to the weed bed to try for squid. never squidded there so just trying it. it was about 6m and it was murky so went shallower to get some herring. got there tied on my new halco laser pro 45 cast it out three cranks of the handle, on. the fish dropped it but i cast out again and the same thing but this time landing it and released the first herring of the morning. i got another two on this lure and dropped to also but as i went to cast my knot slipped and there goes a 10 dollar lure. at least it got me a couple of fish.
so back to the lure box and found another little swimming lure that cost 4 bucks and tied it on cast it out half way in got a herring. the lure was great not as good as the halco but doing its job. the weed was becoming a pain but i could live with that, i got 20 odd herring on the lure and loving it.
we thought we would go and try a spot that had got us a couple of good king george whiting. we got there, put out the chook pellets and waited and waited and waited. first hit felt good but up came a wrasse. then another. after 20mins we were getting annoyed and said in an hour we would go but as soon as we said that these big skippy came in and where hitting our bait hard. we ended up with 4 skippy and let another 6 or seven go.
by this time it was about 2.30 and we started heading home but i said lets troll along the shore back to the marina. so out go 3 metals a short one on the left a long one down the middle and a longish one on the right. we got half way and the reef started to appear on the shore so we trolled closer so they would be near the reef. as we went past a bit that appeared out from nowhere i thought if im gonna get a fish im gonna get it here. so we drove past about 20 seconds later. the lures pased by and the long one got hit. i was using 4 kilo mono and a 25g metal and it got smashed and the fish were running hard. it wasnt a long fight maybe 1-2mins but when i got it to the boat i was happy to see a nice tailor swim up. one thing tho if you have ever thought about netting a fish in a prawn net dont. i had a prawn net in my boat for squidding but forgot the normal one and had to use the prawn net. the tailor went in but it didnt want to come out and it grabbed the netting and ripped it with its teeth and the treble got tangled and it was a mess. after that fish i had to retire that rod as 50-75m of line was stretched and knotting. we kept trolling awhile and after the tailor we looked up and saw a bigger set coming in so we moved out but a big one almost got us off side. got two more herring on the troll and headed home.
ps the rod in the tailor pic wasnt the one that got it. in the trolling pic its the one in the middle.
end total
herring16 ( plus HEAPS released)
skippy 5
tailor 1
cheers danno

Monday trip out for some of our younger members
Submitted by AmericanBen on Tue, 2010-07-06 11:36Took a couple of our younger members (original teenager, young yakker" out on the boat for a fish. Was ugly early morning out deep and some skipper forgot to check the oil and got his alarm and had to head back to the pier:( Since we hadn't caught anything headed back out to the five to one of my old spots and stuck into some big skippy and some pesty wrasse on our small gear.
One of us "YY" wasn't catching anything no matter what side of the boat he fished and of course I had a poke at him! Less than 10 min later he is pulling in a wrasse when this 5.5kg dui came up and snatched it but didn't get the hook...he drops it back down and he dui takes it this time. Fight on with a size 4 (small) hook and herring rig. His first dui and what a way to start; 60 cm and 5.5 kg.
Hopefully fun was had by all and the skippy was good on the tooth but probably not as good as his dui!

Salmon run.
Submitted by Elora Danan on Mon, 2010-07-05 18:43Hey fellow fisho's.
Would you people have a clue if the Salmon would make their graceful trip back South already? If so, that would be great due to myself heading south tomorrow. I have seen a few small schools lurking about around North Mole but they are fussy unless a live bait was offered. What a mission to catch a Herring when you need it right?
Cheers.
