FURUNO = DODGY AFTER SALES SERVICE????

I bought mine through challenge marine, I have treat it like gold, untill a white mark came up behind the screen, so took it back to the shop they sent it off for 5 weeks, only to tell me that i have scratched it behind the screen and it is going to cost me $500 to fix. i said dont worryabout it an what about all these scratches on the screen that were not there before? so the lad grabed a cloth and started to scrub the buggery out of the screen scrapeing all the protective coatin off and adding more scratches. Now after a couple times out a screw has fallen out of the back an the screen fogs up all the time. Is this the sort of back up service you get for $2500 worth of tool???? or are they atking the piss? has anyone else had this bullshit from furuno??? I am pissed right off with them..
Maybe look into a Lowrance RobN, maybe they provide fair back up service for your hard earned cash

Trailer parking

howmany of you have had someone hit your boat trailer while parked a the ramp.

Some nut hit mine yesterday, smashed one of the back lights and bent the frame the light is mounted on.....not too happy at all..

Seen this quite a few times when people pull into park there car and dont realise the trailer cuts the corner more without a boat on it. then go parks a few spaces further away so no one knows it was them.

Anyone else had these issues??

Expressions of interest called for new boat pens at Geraldton

The State Government is calling for expressions of interest for new boat pens proposed for Geraldton.

In Geraldton today for a regional meeting of State Cabinet, Transport Minister Simon O'Brien said 50 new pens for Batavia Coast Marina were planned if there was sufficient interest.

Mr O'Brien said that the proposed construction project would rely on boaters pre-paying pen licence fees.

“Growth in the recreational boating sector in recent years has increased demand for mooring facilities throughout the State and there are long waiting lists for pens at Batavia Coast Marina," he said.

In Western Australia, during the past 10 years the number of larger registered vessels measuring more than 7.5m in length has increased from 4,000 in 1998 to 7,200 in 2008 - an increase of 3,200 vessels or more than 40 per cent.

Department of Transport projections show that with sustained high growth in the sector by 2025 the number of these vessels could double.

The Minister said the Geraldton pen project would be based on the recently completed $3million pen project at Fremantle, which, for the first time in WA, saw pens allocated by public ballot and the pre-payment of licence fees to cover construction costs.

"During the next few weeks, the Department of Transport will advertise for expressions of interest in the new pens at Geraldton,” he said.

“People will be asked to complete documentation clarifying the size of pen required and pay a deposit.

"Following the expression of interest period, the department will assess the level of commitment from potential penholders and establish the scale of each project.

“Tenders will then be called for the design and construction of the pens based on the information received."

Geraldton MLA Ian Blayney welcomed the initiative and said that infrastructure investment of this kind had incalculable benefits, created jobs and assisted in putting Geraldton on the map as a boating hub.

“Recreational boating is such an important part of life for so many of us in the Geraldton community,” Mr Blayney said.

“However as this project is solely reliant on community involvement, I urge all of those interested in obtaining a pen to lodge an expression of interest.”

People wanting further information can contact the department on 9216 8839 or visit http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/geraldtonandexmouthpens

Expressions of interest must be received by Friday, 4 September, 2009.

Fishing for Energy Comes to the Oregon Coast

Innovative program helps with the disposal and removal of old fishing gear and marine debris
Press Release
Source: Fishing for Energy
On Monday August 3, 2009, 5:01 pm EDT

PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Fishing for Energy is catching on in Oregon. Garibaldi and Newport will be the first port communities in the state to participate in the innovative partnership that provides a cost-free solution for fishermen to dispose of old fishing gear that is then turned into energy.

An initiative between Covanta Energy (Covanta), the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Marine Debris Program, and Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc., the Fishing for Energy partnership will place collection bins at the ports to collect old, abandoned or lost fishing gear beginning in August. Abandoned or lost fishing equipment can threaten marine life, impact navigational safety, and have economic repercussions on fishing and shipping enterprises and, most importantly, coastal communities.

"The Fishing For Energy partnership to recycle unusable fishing gear is an idea that has Oregon written all over it. Having the fisheries agencies, the ports, and the waste and recycling industries all working together shows what can be done when everyone gets together to solve an environmental problem," remarked United States Senator Ron Wyden when commenting on the program's expansion to Oregon.

The Fishing for Energy partnership depends on extensive cooperation between local organizations and the fishing community. In Garibaldi and Newport, local agencies and organizations have worked collaboratively with the partnership to make the marine debris removal effort successful by reducing any financial cost to fisherman and ports that would otherwise be incurred to dispose this gear and ensuring that derelict gear does not end up in the marine environment.

"After successfully launching the Fishing for Energy program at ports on the east coast, we are pleased to expand our partnership with NOAA, NFWF and Schnitzer Steel by bringing this program to Oregon," said Paul Gilman, Chief Sustainability Officer at Covanta Energy. "Marine debris is a significant problem for coastal waters, affecting commercial fisherman as well as natural marine wildlife habitats. As one of the solutions to this critical issue, the Fishing for Energy initiative is generating tangible results - not only is it collecting harmful derelict fishing gear and providing cost-free disposal but it is converting that debris into clean, renewable energy."

The Fishing for Energy partnership will kick off their west coast marine debris collection program with launch ceremonies on Tuesday, August 4 at Port of Garibaldi and Wednesday, August 5 at Port of Newport, both beginning at 11 a.m.

Since launching in 2008, the Fishing for Energy partnership has reeled in more than 200 tons of old fishing gear, a portion of which has been retrieved directly from the ocean by fishermen. This year the partnership has expanded to work with ports on both the east and west coasts of the United States, hosting a series of launch events which aim to promote retired or derelict fishing gear collection through community education and outreach. For more information on the partnership visit: www.nfwf.org/fishingforenergy.

Trailer Plug

Ever been unhooking the boat or trailer and ripped of the plug from the flexy cable , always happens on a long trip and nobody can remember the right wiring connection,   My tip is pull the plug apart and copy the wiring to plug connections pin numbers and write it on the winch post with texta or permanent marker  ie  pin 1 , red pin 2  white,  next time your you rip it of our some one else does it , just rewire it by the numbers and away you go

Bunbury offshore spots

hey just wondering if anyone could tell me some spots i can try off bunbury, right now the water to me looks like a desert. i have no idea where to go if anyone could help would be much appreciated

Juvenille Fish

Is it just me or is anyone else noticing a large number of Juvenile fish about at the moment? especially Pinks, dhus and reds too on the weekend.

Was fishing out around rotto over the weekend on some new found coral, and also a few stops on the way out, and wow was amazed at the amount of small fish about. Many small dhu'smany many many small pinks, and even small reds.

Sounder was lighting up like a xmas tree, and moving slightly everytime and constant juvies!!

decided to pop out the lighter gear (10lb) at the chance the bigger ones were a little shy or mouthing the baits and feeling the hooks.

Got blown away first drop :( then after that was double hookups of reds and small pinks. Got a nice red on light gear!! about a 10 min fight!!!.

Just thought its a good sign at the moment, in depths of 25m right out to 65m

Last couple trips out in different locations has also shown quite a few juvies out and about.

They look real healthy too!

Bodie

cheers fellas

Fishwrecked get together - Roger Knife Afterparty

I didn't make the pissup last night as the Missus had a bit of a turn for the worst. I did however manage to make the gathering and headed up to Flatrock early this morning for a fish with the guys. It was quite interesting albeit not a lot of fish about apart from the cat food UncleStu kept hauling in LOL.

I will leave it to the rest of the bunch to add further comment and pictures. Thanks for the snags girls. You rock!

Cheers,

Vince

Rottnest Yesterday

Was out of bed at 6 yesterday morning to head out to rotto on the water at 6:30 straight out to rottnest for a bit of bottom bashing not much around manage to get a few sized blackass then decided to see if there was any action around the breakers at west end. Noticed a whirlpool sort of thing that look like the whirlpools the snapper create in the sound when they are breeding so dropped a few plastics into it and straight away dad got bricked by something of substantual size and then landed a lot of skippy around the 1kg mark. Then we seen a few big flashes of yellow and straight away we knew they were kingys the next hour or so was intense with every cast hooking up to kingfish around the 5kg mark using plastics hardbodys mulies and anything else you can think of. I decided to pull the 8 weight fly gear out and give that a go first cast and i was on the spool on my reel exploded and a i had a huge bird nest so i grabbed the line and held on and managed to get it to the boat luckily it was only about 50cm as the metre long ones that were cruising behind the boat would have destroyed my gear. Then i pulled the bream gear out a daiwa sol 3000 matched to a daiwa sol 3-5kg rod with 4lb tuf-line and a 20lb flurocarbon leader got bricked many times but finally landed my first kingy on bream gear weighing around 2-3kg but there was much bigger ones down there and i wanted one of them on the light stuff. After many more bust offs my mates in the boat had landed around 5 or 6 about 4kg each but i persisted with the bream gear. I put a 5in swim shad on and the second it hit the water i was on and losing line at a rapid rate. All three of us were hooked up and losing line the first one got to the boat and leadered it in then the next one got to the boat which was one of the biggest for the day at about 5.5kg. I was still on and getting dominated but after about 20 minutes finally it hit the net and i had a 5kg kingfish on 4lb gear i was stoked to say the least and to top it all off at the last spot for the day what we think was a white of around 3.5m came in and spooked all the kingfish off and then harrased some angelfish for about 10 minutes before disapearing back into the depths. This all got me wondering what is the record for kingfish on 4lb gear and does anyone know what steps i have to take to claim the record if i get another one next time?

anyone go landbased today

hey guys did anyone go landbased today? went to north mole and woodmans point this morn and didnt even get a bite.

mulies on sunday???

just wondering where i could grab a block of mulies on sunday. I'll be driving from joondanna to como and then on to mossy park and the final destination is the east freo boat ramp.  somewhere along the way would be great.

Cheers

saltwater reel advice

looking at getting a medium heavy duty saltwater reel for offshore use and off the beach i was looking at putting 15kg braid on it i am willing to spend around $350 cheaper if i can but i want a reel that will last me a long time.

ive been looking at the shimano saragosa 6000 size or the penn slammer 560. but not sure if the penn slammer would be up to the task, any advice would be great thanks.

cheers Ethan

Bad Wrap for Fishos

This article was published in a local newspaper in NSW very close to one of Australia's best known land based game fishing spots.

This article reflects very badly on fishos and I have written a letter to the editor to tell them as much.  I have attached the link to the article and copied my letter below for you to read.  I recommend you blokes check out the website that I mention there www.albaa.com.au  These blokes have put together a really good group of people and they are doing some very good things to give fishos some positive press and a good name.  If you can please join their association and perhaps a WA chapetr could be set up to spread the good word and carry out the good actions here.

I would be interested to hear your thoughts.

Gus

The article:

http://www.southcoastregister.com.au/news/local/news/general/deep-sea-dump/1580958.aspx

My letter to the editor:

I write to express my concerns on your article titled ‘Deep Sea Dump’ (SCR 29/7/09).  As a former local of the area I am very familiar with the location mentioned and the amount of traffic that it receives from anglers, bushwalkers, divers and tourists.

As a very keen angler I was disappointed with the one sidedness of the story.  I appreciate that these divers took the time to clean up this area.  Most anglers who fish this area are very keen to ensure this location remains as rubbish free as possible.  There are a number of fishing websites where users regularly discuss the state of this area and most anglers are very concerned with the state of the ledge.  So much so that a number of users have create an organization call ALBAA (Australian Land Based Anglers Association) which is an organization which focuses on education programs for anglers such as environmental care and sustainable fishing and organizes regular clean-up days of popular fishing spots.

On a number of occasions ALBAA have organized clean ups of the area you mention and twice volunteers who enjoy their fishing and diving have planned to dive this area and carry an underwater clean up only to have to cancel it due to safety concerns in very large swell.

I believe your article very unfairly targets all anglers and generalizes up to all be a bunch of cowboys that have no regard for our environment where in actual fact most of us fish not only to catch fish but because we have a genuine love for the locations that our sport takes us to.  We are very concerned about the future of our sport, both for the fish stocks and the environment.

One major problem being experienced around Jervis Bay is that the closure of many fishing spots in the area has created a concentration of people fishing a very limited number of spots.  This overcrowding has resulted in these spots ending up the way they have.  Another problem is the lack of waste disposal facilities in these areas.

I encourage you and your reader to please not tarnish the reputation of all anglers due to the thoughtless acts of a few very small minded individuals.  I also encourage you to spend some time looking at http://www.albaa.com.au/ and seeing the very great work being done by this organization.
