New jetty for Jurien Bay
Submitted by Colin Hay on Wed, 2009-07-15 11:51Construction of a new jetty at Jurien Bay could begin as early as next year after the State Government allocated funding towards the project.
The Government yesterday announced funding for more than 300 projects as part of the first round of the Royalties for Regions Grants Scheme.
The local community and Shire have been exploring ways to save the two wooden jetties, after the Department of Planning and Infrastructure planned to knock them down two years ago.
The Shire of Dandaragan has welcomed the $750,000 allocated for the Jurien Bay foreshore and jetty redevelopment.
Chief Executive Clinton Strugnell says the town’s jetties have a long tradition with tourism and recreation.
“They’re in the order of 40-years-old and certainly there’s a very strong association with Jurien Bay and the jetties,” he said.
“Certainly, the council and the community feel that the jetty here is very much recognised at Jurien and it’s important that we have one going into the future.
“It’s an area which is used for the community for large gatherings, for things like Australia day.
“There’s quite often bands in the park down there and going into the future, we see it as a key meeting place for community events.”

Sneak peek @ the Banax Kingpin 5000
Submitted by steveB on Wed, 2009-07-15 11:07
Banax have around 10 new models of reels coming out this season. Here's one you might be interested in.
The Kingpin has been designed by GLADIATOR for Australian condition with the help of input from tackle stores all over Aus. The reel has the banax HCS (hard core system) that makes these reels so tough. The HCS is the trilogy of precision machine cut brass gears, brass pinion and stainless steel shaft. The drag system is 6 part, incorporating 3 carbontex and 3 alloy washers giving 14kg of drag. There are 6 high grade stainless steel shielded German bearings, titanium spool lip. Full power metal body, rotor and spool to keep all internals straight when under load reducing wear on parts. The drag is water resistant and the reel carries a 5 year warranty on ALL parts. The reels are made in the Banax factory in Korea.
The reels will be realeased in September.
If you need any more info drop me a PM.
Cheers

fish and cricket
Submitted by Roger Knife on Mon, 2009-07-13 17:01Alright again
Went out again on sunday for the old mans birthday, and caught a few more fish.....! Trouble was we went to the pub for a quiet half saturday night, this turned into 6 pints and left us pissed and wondering what the morning will bring? We awoke at about 5 and got ourselves ready for the day. It was an hour and a half drive down and all the way we discussed the wind and conditions. Arriving nice and early on the boat we noticed the clouds break and the sun come out, although still blowing force 4 from the south west. We headed out in the lea of the shore and treid for a few mackeral for bait, they were small and hard to come by but eventually we got a few. We were after sea bream and fished a 3 hook dropper rig with worm and squid/mackeral as bait. It was hard going due to the boat going up and down but we were all catching.. Unfortunately only poor cod and pouting-rubbish fish-. After a move me and the old man started to catch bream and ended up with 3 each although one of mine was undersixe so went back. We also started catching dogfish and small bullhuss, all of which went back. We tried drift fishing for plaice and a managed a small but legal fish and took it back for the pot....my first plaice! We finished the day fishing close to the shore after getting beaten up by big waves and swell on the plaice grounds. Not a bad day all in all me and me dad did the best, as we fished light rigs with smaller hooks for better presentation, against the words of others but our method paid off, as noone else caught plaice or bream!! 2 weeks to go, i hope i leave the windy weather here!!!
HOW DID PANESAR AND ANDERSON NOT GET BOWLED OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A DRAW IS LIKE A VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gulls awaiting the blood and guts!!!
Not massive but should still taste good.
Pan sized!!!
My first one!!!!
Dinner
Cheers see you soon

Kingfish makes epic swim to NZ
Submitted by Colin Hay on Mon, 2009-07-13 16:25A fish captured and tagged by a New South Wales far south coast fisherman three years ago has been recaptured after nearly doubling in size during a 2,000km swim.
State Primary Industries Recreational Fisheries Manager Phil Bolton says 30,000 yellowtail kingfish have been tagged since 1973.
But he says the recent catch is one of only three kingfish tagged in Australia to be recaptured near New Zealand.
"The yellowtail kingfish that was originally released at Eden was tagged by a chap called John Rankin, of Eden Sport and Game Fishing Club, and he recorded a length of 48cm," he said.
"It was re-caught this last summer off the north-east coast of New Zealand at a length of 90cm."

Licences - again
Submitted by chevin on Mon, 2009-07-13 10:00As may be expected there are numbers of us keen on opposing the
proposed licence fees and although petitions may be entered there is no
obligation for anyone to even look at them. However, there is a letter
that most MPs would probably rather not have us know about. I have
adapted the standard form to embrace our concerns. I know there is one
line to which many will object as, indeed, I do. However, I am prepared
to swallow that bit of pride in order to defend our sport as I hope
others will. If you submit this letter, Mr Moore is obliged to read
it and send a reply to all of those who send it to him. If you do not
get a response there are processes that can be followed to rectify the
matter. Please copy the letter, complete it and send to Mr Moore at
Parliament House, Harvest Terrace, Perth 6000.

sounder bottom coverage
Submitted by grayzeee on Fri, 2009-07-10 16:12Hi all
i'm new to this site so this is a big hello and a bit of a question regarding sounders.
i've just got hold of my new boat (6m HH) and it's been set up with a furuno 585 with an airmar transducer. i did have a lowrance unit on my previous boat and was very pleased with its performance.
i fish out of hillarys a lot , and can usually be found off the back of 3 mile.
With the old lowrance unit , in 15 meters of water , it was great to see fish showing on the sounder and watch your bait drop down to them as they came up too meet it.
with the new furuno gear though , i couldn't see my baits drop down in the same depths.
this irked me a bit as the transducer is a lot more powerful.
i went to the airmar website and checked the details. it seems that running my unit in 200Hz . thebottom coverage at 10 meters is 2foot by 3 foot in old money.
not much at all really.
200Hz is supposed to be for shallow water but you could drive by a decent lump right next to your boat and never know it was there.
have taken to using 50Hz in shallow water down to around 30 meters , then can change back to 200 till i get to 120 odd meters , and its back to 50Hz and i'm pinging ground the size of half a footy field.
is anybody else experiencing this and using 50Hz in the shallows?
are you loosing much definition?
cheers for any replies

Fishing Rule Clarification - 3 hooks
Submitted by crasny1 on Fri, 2009-07-10 15:05I was sure I knew this. But somebody just cast doubts into my mind!!!!
3 hooks doesnt actually mean 3 hooks in my mind, it means 3 attachments that can catch fish.
I could have a taikabura jig (2 hooks) and 2 droppers with say a gang of 3 and then a snelled pair and still be legal. I know I am but this chap just disagree.
Cheers all

Petition handed over to Opposition.
Submitted by Jabba Jabba on Fri, 2009-07-10 13:38The petiton as it stands at the moment has been handed over to Mr John Robert Quigley MLA, Member for Mindarie, Australian Labor Party during a meeting with him today.
The duplicate signatures were removed, so at the time of printing out there were 483 signatures.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to voice their opinion.
The petiton is still active and will be given to the Norman Moore, so hopefully we can get more responces over the next week.

Leader to terminal knot -- your favourite and why. Teach the novices a bit
Submitted by crasny1 on Fri, 2009-07-10 13:28I started off fishing as a 5yo. Probably started tying my first hook about 7-8 (now at the age ALzheimers set in ) and it was probably a couple of grannies or something stupid.
Progressed for a very long time to the locked blood knot but have now settled into the Uni knot for most situations. Easy to tie and can be done "blind" in the night (or with my failing vision LOL).
Obviously I use others but the question is your favourite, most used.
Even I would be interested but novices should love this sort of thing.
Cheers

How do you guys feel about this weather and do you think this weekend will be worth an effort for serious fishing? I will prolly disregard everything you say and go but it's interesting to see what you think.
