freshwater cobbler
Submitted by Roger Knife on Fri, 2009-05-01 03:13Bonjour
Just been shopping and saw freshwater cobbler in the fish counter. Unfortunately it was battered so unsure of what it really looks like. Bought some and ate it, tasted good. Just wondered if it comes from your neck of the woods and if it is similar to the saltwater variety of cobbler that you have?
Cheers fellas

Exmouth Comp
Submitted by crasny1 on Thu, 2009-04-30 22:40Good luck to you all. Should have planned my holiday with this instead of Broome for 2 weeks just gone. Poor fishing and the worst launching facilities for a tourist. Perhaps Broome members should lobby to get a facility for launching that is user friendly.
Sorry bitching
Have a great comp and wish I was there.

NW Creek Fishing Advice/Help
Submitted by billy chase on Thu, 2009-04-30 17:04Gday, been creek fishin up north for a couple of years now and still havent really caught anything worth writing home about. Only had the boat option for a year now and still havent caught anything except Jacks and stinkin cattys! I reckon I have read and researched just about everything there is for Creeks but still cant get into anything different. Just wondering if some ppl might be able to give me some advice/info on catching/targetting Blak Jews, Threadies and barra. What ground to look for, what depths. How much depth change makes for a deep hole, as i am thinking 1m+. How far up the creeks is worth fishing? Is the area towards the mouth more productive then further up? What type of baits etc.
I have been fishing mainly in the Ashburton, Fortesque and Balla Balla systems.
Any help will be greatly appreciated as i am getting frustrated!!!!!
Thanks

not good
Submitted by catchalittle on Thu, 2009-04-30 16:42VIC tackle thieves still on the rampage 29 Apr 2009 Further to recent reports of tackle thefts suffered by retail stores across Victoria comes more police verification of Melbourne tackle shops being targeted by thieves. Around 100 high value fishing reels were stolen and glass display cases smashed in the most recent burglary in Mahoneys Road, Campbellfield, at about 2.42am on Saturday 25th april, 2009. About 400-500 fishing reels have been stolen from stores from Hoppers Crossing through to Narre Warren. The same reel types have been reported stolen each time and estimated total value is up to $500,000. Brands include Okuma, ABU, Shimano, Daiwa and Penn. None of the reels have their warranty documentation, as the boxes have not been stolen. Anyone who can help police with their investigation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Trailer parts WTB
Submitted by makai on Thu, 2009-04-30 09:53Hi everyone. I am looking to replace some rollers and spindles on my trailer. They are the large, black rubber, v-style keel rollers, supporting a 24ft glass boat. I will be checking out BIAS, Whitworths and BCF for price, but would be interested in suggestions for "value for money" suppliers from anyone that has done the research. I am on a tight budget! I would also be interested in buying any suitable rollers that may be lurking in sheds anywhere if they are in good condition and the price is right. (I can supply sizes to anyone that may have some to sell, once I get a chance to measure mine properly. The boat is stored away from my home.)
Thanks in anticipation . Peter

The strangest bait, rig or lure you have used
Submitted by Colin Hay on Thu, 2009-04-30 07:44As a follow up to wopjrb's tip that he uses marshmallows to catch Mulloway and OT's success with catching a herring on a piece of hot cross bun, I thought it might be intesting to start a post to see what are some of the strangest baits, rigs or lures that you have caught a fish on.
We used to use licorice to catch bream many years ago and I once fashioned a lure out of chewing gum and a bit of tin foil to catch tailor at Hat Head in NSW.
How about you guys and girls,
All the best, Colin Hay

Gamex 2009 Report ?
Submitted by Paul N on Wed, 2009-04-29 16:19Find it strange that there is no report from gamex on the EGFC web site. I would think they would be keen to publish the results but I have not seen them anywhere. Am I looking in the wrong places ? Has anyone else seen a report somewhere. Would also be nice to find out the results from the billfish tags and where they were caught. Is this info out there somehere or is it for the chosen few. This year boats were asked to fill out how many fish were raised as well as tagged . I recon this info would be great to get hold of for future trips.

What is the best bluewater overhead spin reel?
Submitted by Neo2_000 on Tue, 2009-04-28 22:59Looking for the Ultimate Overhead Spinning reel for casting even lightweight 30 to 40 gram metal slices to pelagics.
Essential Prerequistes:LIGHT Spool for easy casting and high retrieve ratio
Desirable Properties: Reasonable Price and smooth drag.
The best reels I have found so far:
ABU7500: 5:1retreive, very light spool but average drag
Daiwa SL30SH 6:1 retreive, light spool, excellent drag. If the gearbox was angled forwards this would be the perfect reel. Instead it at the 6 o'clock position fouling fingers on trigger grip reel-seats.
TSM IV: 6:1 retreive but way heavy spool - can literally grind skin down to bloody raw flesh in a single snappy cast when feathering the spool - seriously!
How do the latest generation of reels stack up? Are there contenders with lightweiught spools better than these?
Any advice appreciated.
TIA,
Neo.

Favourite reels
Submitted by Roger Knife on Tue, 2009-04-28 17:14Hey fellas
Just looking into new reels and selling some old ones on ebay. Wondered what everyone favourite reel is, dont matter what sort of fishing, salt or fresh. My absolute favourite is the penn 500L jigmaster. An old style reel but never lets me down, easy to maintain, robust and strong and copes really well with haevy leads, big tides and strong fish. Just wondered what everyones else's best reel is. Might give me some new ideas on a new one!!
Cheers

A question about all the small pinkies
Submitted by boofo on Tue, 2009-04-28 14:15following up on a comment on another thread...
On my usual spot on Saturday SE of rotto chasing KG the undersize pinkies were like flies. Typically 220 but up to 290mm. Even on the sand picking a pinkie every second cast - as quick as the sand whiting.
My question: is it normal for this time of year or is it possible the closed spawning has worked? I presume these are this seasons brood but they must grow awfully fast to get this big so quick - mind you they seem hungry.

Game rod to suit LD9500
Submitted by WODF on Tue, 2009-04-28 08:48Gday all,
looking at replacing my current 5'6, 15-24kg, fully rollered game rod which is an absolute broomstick. I find it hard to put hurt on a fish as the rod is just way to stiff. It is matched with my Jovian LD9500 which is pretty similar to a TLD 20 or 30 I'd say and at the moment I'm running 24kg but plan on running 15kg in the future. Ideally it will be used for trolling. Can anyone recommend me a good rod for under $200? Also what are everyones opinions on fully rollered, roller tip and all the other types of trolling rods?
Thanks in advance.

Stradic 4000 FI
Submitted by Jarra on Mon, 2009-04-27 19:08Hey
I just bought a Stradic 4000 FI. Ive noticed now that its quite noisy when winding the handle. Sounds like the noise is coming from the rotor or something.
Has anyone noticed this with there Stradic? Does it need extra lubing before use?

Sambo Jigging Bonanza
Submitted by Bluetonic on Mon, 2009-04-27 19:01Had a day fishing soft plastics and metal jigs off Cape Naturaliste with Hlokk and Damo6230 on Saturday. We released 30 Sambos and lost many more. It was an absolutely awesome day. They weren't big fish but they smashed us hard every time. We were hoping for some Snapper and possibly a YTK but alas! Those Sambos just kept on coming. We did manage some Sargeant Baker and Skippy as well.

I'm heading west
Submitted by deancantfish on Mon, 2009-04-27 15:35Hi guys, I finally have had enough of the east coast, I have been going up and down the coast for years in my job, from the Sunshine Coast to Wollongong as work dictates.
It is 8 C here, wind howling from the west and I have 6 weeks to go on the current shutdown.
I am thinking of packing the forerunner up when it's over and heading to Broome or anywhere down to Hedland, been 28 yrs since I have been out there.
A general enquiry....has the so called economic downturn hit there?
I am Franna crane operator and have had to chase the work in the east. I don't really want FI/FO I'd rather settle somewhere warm, with beer.
Just interested to know what people in the west think. I'll probably fly over anyway when the shut finishes.... oh and it seems the fishing here has lean times???? Last time I was there it was throw a line near the water and you caught something??? Pros wrecking it there too?
If anyone is heading to either the sunny coast in Qld or south coast NSW give me a yell, I have lots of GPS marks and tips, for fishing and pubs.
Cheers
Dean
