Dirk Hartog Island
Submitted by TJ on Fri, 2009-04-24 07:51Hi there.
I'm heading up to Dirk Hartog Island in June to stay on the island for about a week. Has anyone fished it before, and can offer some advice. I'm taking up an 8 foot Ugly Stick, 6-8.5kg, with a Penn SS8500 loaded with 15kg mono. Also taking a Live Fibre 7 foot, 8-10kg rod. I've got a Penn SS6500, with either 10 or 15kg on there, not sure yet.
Loaded up with all the usual lures, shallow swimming lures, metal slices, poppers, leadhead jigs and SP's.
We are staying at "The Block", so I am assuming there will be mainly cliff fishing (yes, we have a cliff gaff), but not far from Turtle Bay either, so I'd say those are the two spots we'll be fishing.
Any advice or tips would be great.
Cheers
TJ

Fishing saturday for salmon - dunsborough
Submitted by Johnyy_Boii on Thu, 2009-04-23 21:16
hey guys im new here
tomorrow afternoon im going down to dunsborough and im going to try my luck and try catch a salmon, i went last week and hooked one up but my line got tangled around my reel and lost it, 2 other friends managed to hook them up and they were 79 and 82cm. I will be fishing all day saturday and hope to catch some, i will post pics!
Now i need a little bit of advice, im only 15 and have only been fishing for a few months now so dont know too much and this will be the biggest fish ive ever caught if i do get one.
I was wondering what lure I should use? last time i used a metal twisty one..should i use that again or should i try some gangs and a mulie? Also the rod and reel im using is a 10ft silstar rod with a penn slamer reel and 300m of 20lb line, but the line is really thin...the guy said it was equivalent to a 12lb line but its as stong as 20lb..will this be enough?
any advice will be great
cheers Johny.

Busso Advice
Submitted by GusG on Thu, 2009-04-23 15:55I am heading to Busselton for the weekend and need a bit of advice. I have a 3.7m tinnie with a 15hp on the back and was wondering if the area out the front of Busso is safe enough to take that out there or does it get decent swell running in there? Also if I do take it out what sort of fish can you catch down there?
I was also going to take some land based gear and chase some salmon. Thanks for any help dudes, much appreciated.

Anyone in karratha need a deckie this sunday????
Submitted by jus on Tue, 2009-04-21 17:24Hey all,
I've been in karratha a couple of months now and this is my first opportunity to go catch some fish! I've brought up some lures, rods, reels and stuff so no one has to lend me theirs. I will happily share all costs involved and can even bring some beers if needed :)
[Staying at Gap Ridge village at the moment without transport]
If not, I wil probably hire a boat out from dampier, so if you dont have a boat and want to come along too then maybe we could sort something out?
Either way, please PM me or email me on jusdemello@gmail.com or get me on 0401 941 438.
Cheers!

Rotto trip
Submitted by Ollie on Mon, 2009-04-20 22:41Friday had nice conditions so decided to head out deepish for a bit of jigging for bottom species with a few hits/hook ups on small jigs but nothing landed.
Dropped some baits down.
after getting nothing else decided to head in shallow.
got quiet a few big skippy but reasonably quiet so decided to throw the towl in, a bit surprised with how quiet the day was. milsey headed home while I stayed with a couple of mates on the Island.
awesome sun set over salt lakes Friday night.
I decided to go for a quick freedive sat morning.
Heaps of bub baldies around.
How not to kneel on an urchin, had what i think was an urchin spine go through my wetsuit and into my knee.

Crumbed Albany Sardenes
Submitted by LandyAndy on Mon, 2009-04-20 20:39If you are in Albany get hold of some crumbed Sardines from Bevans(they tell me they are available from their processing shed)
They were selling rolls with them barbequed at the "Festivile of the Sea" in Albany easter saturday.
I bought 4 packs home(2 packs for $10) cyrovacked and frozen.
ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!!!
Andrew
There are NO fish in Albany!!!!
Submitted by LandyAndy on Mon, 2009-04-20 20:33After 10 days in Albany and lots of fishing expeditions I can say there are NO fish in Albany!!!!
No Salmon,LOADS of undersize Skippy and small herring, almost as annoying as Blowies as they clean your bait up soon as it hits the water.
I got bitten off twice fishing off the rocks at Two peoples Bay,lost a Nanagai and also a large slender silver fish with black stripes when the swell didnt match the rocks(any ideas what it was??? it fought for almost 10mins!!!) .Also managed to land a 40cm Skippy in the same spot,a personal best for me,I threw back 2 large Buffalo Bream around the 50cm size. The spot I found was extremely deep, dark blue water and no snags uless you let the line come right into your feet.Shame about the small fish smashing my mulies up,Im sure there was bigger beasts to be had.If anybody is fishing Two Peoples Bay,go to Little Beach,go out onto the rocks, walk around the first casm in the rocks then fish 50m or so the other side of it.Its pretty safe as far as rock fishing goes, just watch the swell.
Had to recover my mates Rangie from the Bournholme sandhill tuesday morning, broken rear suspension and rear tailshaft. That took out my "local" fishing guide for the rest of the week as he had to fix it to return to Williams.
At least the cat is happy.I saved a few small herring and yellowtail caught just incase a school of Salmon was found.
Despite not catching much,I fished more in the last 10 days than I have in the last 10 years,AND Albany turned on some spectacular weather once those easterlies dropped.
Until next time!!!!

unknown fish
Submitted by Leemo on Mon, 2009-04-20 20:28i have seen a very odd looking fish at hillaries lately while buffy fishing. it reacts very we4ll to the bread we use for bait. it is elongated and has silver flanks. it also has very long and wavy bright blue fins and has a big forked bright blue tail. it looks simialr to a dart or permit but is longer and not as stout. anyone have any idea what it could be?

Pilbara winds
Submitted by Bodie on Mon, 2009-04-20 09:24meant to be in Karratha for the long weekend and just looked at the weather charts!!!!!!
Bloody wind is always around when i go up there.
Just curious if easterlie winds make for bad conditions up there? Would the island be calm??
Heading up there trying to find some mackies and some big trout, mainly on lures, so any adivce on colours, depths, general areas to try for trout would be great :)
