Sinker moulds wanted to borrow
Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 2009-05-15 13:41Hi Guys,
A mate of mine has 300kg of lead he removed from his yacht and wants to borrow the size 16, 18, 20, 24 sinker moulds for bottom bouncing snapper type sinkers. In return he will give you a bag of sinkers.
Will collect - prefer SOR - Canning Vale area.
Alternatively does someone want to make him a few bags in return for a shitload of lead?
Cheers

Boat casting combo
Submitted by Sekans on Thu, 2009-05-14 18:28I'm looking at buying a new rod and reel to use for casting lures off the boat. I would like to use it for a range of species, from herring and gardies to maybe salmon and tailor. I think I want something around the 7 foot mark. Any recommendations on a new rod and reel combo up to about $150 would be great. I'm not looking for anything flash, just something that would do the job.
Thanks guys.

Injurys or storys of heading out in rough weather
Submitted by tailor marc on Wed, 2009-05-13 08:27This should make for a good topic ,
Now i have been out in rough weather in a boat 3+ meter swell but i have never been out where the skipper (hard dude) punched through each wave without backing off until while up in Karraha.
Now it wasnt that rough but we were going airborne strait into the face of on coming waves. I was fully shitting!!!
Each time we hit the oncoming wave it was like doing 10 rounds with mike tyson!!! Hurt like all hell!!!!
Infact no joke my nuts were slapping the seat and as soon as the nut ache went away then BANG!!!! again!! My poor nuts!!! I recong i fracturd a few vertebres in my neck! This guy was a hard ass!!!
He only slowed down when the live well bent the beams in the floor! Thank goodness for my nuts!
Another time was steep point! Got real rough while in the tinny and we hit the face of a wave, i landed face down on a eskie biting my lip and hurting my knees and hands/ wrist and my mate mat smashed his knees against the ally seat!
Whats storys have you all had?

Dampier Trolling, BBSMacs or C trout
Submitted by crasny1 on Mon, 2009-05-11 19:16I have been targetting both. I am just trying to find the best leader for both. Single strand wire with Haywire for the Macs is all thats needed. Trying to find the right combo for the trout has me a little baffled. Is it Flouro for sinking or Mono for floating. And also what strenght as the higher you go the less fish attack. Trying to get the balance right. Any help from the Pilbara crew appreciated (and anyone that has an opinion).
Cheers

Yamaha 15HP outboard for sale.
Submitted by Hank on Mon, 2009-05-11 18:52I have a '98 Yammy 15HP outboard for sale, it hasn't done much work over the last 5 years and is a good reliable unit. Asking $1100. I'm in Madora Bay Mandurah.
Was it you?
Submitted by 7739ian on Mon, 2009-05-11 10:02This is a query - not a criticism as my boat skills are as good as my golf skills - lacking but i was interested if the guys diving at Sugarloaf yesterday were site members as i have a couple of questions. It was pretty blowy with a fairly strong onshore breeze and a fair swell breaking - we were showing some U.S. visitors the Capes region and at Sugarloaf there was a couple of guys - one diving, probably after crays and anchored about 20m off the rocks in a 4 plus metre tinny. We became a bit concerned as they were obviously having a battle pull starting the outboard - finally got it going and headed south into a fairly choppy swell and near beam on breeze of about 15 knots. The boat was fitted with a near full length and width Bimini cover which remained up with the pitching and rolling and crosswind. An hour or so later they pulled up to the Canal Rocks ramp and loaded up and went. This is around 13k's point to point and it seemed to me a risky exercise in a tinny - my queries are: How much risk is there with Bimini's in a crosswind? And - anyone else around Cape Naturaliste yesterday? - if so was a 4.2 or 4.4 tinny too small for the conditions?

3rd trip in a row dramas!!!
Submitted by tailor marc on Mon, 2009-05-11 09:04Well im now back from my holiday in Karratha. Gee what a time!!!
Got busted off many times by MONSTER unknowns!!!!!
The worst was when i was feeding a unweighted gardie out the back of the dingy and there was loads of slack line and i noticed a 20kg+ either wahoo or big mack jump so i flicked the bailarm over and no joke, the line tangled around it!!! SNAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lost it! I was frantically tryin to undo it but ran out of time. It was like a bad dream.
Ended up catching a smal shark mackeral, and about 3 small black tips which i released
We also went to point samson and i landed 3 nice mangrove jacks. Lost a good GT and Threadfin aswell.

We also went out on a mates boat around the burrup and i caught my first coral trout, small spaniard and spangled emperor. I didnt have my camera this day :(
NOW FOR THE DELEMA..
My mate told his girlfrend that we were fishing for 6 days and she said only if you look after Bella (2yr old girl ) for the night on monday nite only so she could go out with the girls. We agreed. Well me and 3 mates were heading to a fishing spot at 12pm on monday on the dingy and we went through a big passage to get to open ocean. We fished there for a few hours till 3.30 and decided we should head home to be home around 5pm. As we enterd the passage, we were flying along!!!! 40+kph!!! I was looking over the side of the boat and noticed that the previos 5meters+ deep water was only 0.5 meters so i yelled to my mate to STOP THE BOAT!!!! Unfortunatly i was to slow and we run aground . I said to them that the best idea was to hop out to get the weight off the boat and push it. So we all hopped out and started pushing the dingy in this kilometer wide passage. I seen about 15 sharks go past, each time i dived into the boat packin myself, i had turtle swim past and fish. It was amaising! We must of got about 50meters before its was ankle deep and we couldnt go any further.
I said to my mate "Whens the tide due in"??? he said "9.30pm" This was real bad!!!! We had no phone reception and no lights on the dingy and no torch. Also there was no moon due that night. I suggested that we walk to the edge of the passage and climb the hills and try get reception. We all agreed so 2 of us went for a walk dodging small sharks, stingrays, mudcrabs and turtles and walked up onto the shore. Right about then my left thong had a blowout so i waited on a small hill while my mate went higher. Now for the big news stuff....I looked to my left and noticed a etching into the rock and walked over and no joke, about 50 rock aboriginal etchings of pictures of crabs, stingrays , turtles etc I yelled for my mate to come over and we agreed to come back and GPS mark the spot and take pics but for now we were in big trouble with his GF haha.We had no phone reception. Well 9.30 came and tide came in and we motord back to the boat ramp in darkness , had the sea rescue out looking for us and a mates gf ready to tear strips off us. I went back and took pics and marked the spot and guess what??? Im the first to ever find these ones!!! My name will be recorded as the person to descover them!!!!! I will also be able to name the site.
There are a few rock art in the burrup but these have never been seen by anyone!!! The west australian wants to do a story but there may be legal issues due to us not being allowed on that bit of land so im trying to contact idiginous affars to find out. .
Since found out that the burrup rock art is 20,000-40,000 years old. Oldest in the world
pics to follow....

CPBA Ramps Today
Submitted by johno on Sun, 2009-05-10 21:14Fellow Fishers
I was launching my boat this morning with my son and a guy with his boat on the other ramp adjacent to me (I think is hull was a thunderbird style? Inboards) his engine blew up! It was a mighty bang.. with bits flying about… I am still speechless just thinking about it.We all came to assist and lucky, the club bosun (Tony) had a big fire extinguisher close by… the owner of the boat is very lucky that the rest of the boat didn’t go up as well, luckily no one got hurt.I really feel sorry for the owner, thinking he is just a guy like us with his pride and joy…and bang!
It reminds us how dangerous boats can be.
My son and I were only about 10-15meters from the explosion…

Drift baiting - help please
Submitted by Hayzy on Sat, 2009-05-09 15:49Hi all,
Im just after some advice / tips re-driftbaiting in 30 - 40m.
I have recently been experimenting with driftbaiting and found that my hookup rate (when compared with bottom bashers on the boat) has dramatically increased. My problem is, I seem to drop the fish once i have them about half way up!!!!! Very frustrating when you know a quality fish is on the other end.
Anyway, I have tried a couple of different techniques including, both hard and loose drag settings, striking vs freespooling and then setting the hook. I am very conscious of highpointing the rod, so I dont think this is the problem. ANyway, any tips would be appreciated. I know there is some great info on the site already (which is my main reason for recently joining fishwrecked), but nothing seemed to answer my specific question.
In terms of equipment, I generally use a spinning outfit that comprises a spheros 8000, 30lb fireline and matched wih a 6'6 Livefibre rod. Would an overhead (Saltiga 40 - 50lb braid) be the better outfit to use or is this too heavy? My rig is usually two snelled Owner 7/0 with a running bean sinker (size dependent on drift) to the top hook. Circle hooks? Bait is usually whole squid.
Not sure if i am doing something wrong, or have just been bloody unlucky up until now. Thanks in advance for any advice.
Hayzy.

Man Falls into water with shark
Submitted by Blank Cheque on Sat, 2009-05-09 12:36Man falls into water with shark
Posted 48 minutes ago
A man has had a lucky escape after a shark attacked his dinghy at Point Perron, south of Perth.
It is understood the shark bit the boat's outboard motor, and as the man tried to swat it away with an oar he fell into the water.
Police say the man escaped this morning's incident without injury.

travel rod
Submitted by kane on Sat, 2009-05-09 06:10Hi
This ones mainly to the sponsors,
After my recent success with a hand line and home made popper with the dolphin fish, fishing from the oil rig i work on im keen to get a rod out here and cast some decent poppers. The problem is i have to be able to fit the rod in my bag to put it on the helicopter to get it to work.
I have found this rod, but it isnt sold in Australia, well it might be but i cant find it anywhere.
If you guys can supply me with this rod or something similar please let me know, otherwise Ill have to send my cash over to the poms and id rather keep it here in aus if possible.
Ill be using 15kg line with probably something in the region of 40 - 50kg leader so i can skull drag the fish the 100 foot air gap from the water up to the main deck of the rig.
Anyway any help will be greatly appreciated,
Kane

Coral Bay
Submitted by keithsoutar on Fri, 2009-05-08 20:37New to this website and new to fishing!
Got bitten by the bug when up in Exmouth with work and for the last six months have been getting to grips with shore based fishing in Perth with limited success, but still enjoyable. Certainly aint the same as fishing off a boat on the North West Shelf, but never mind.
Looking for some advice on good spots in Coral Bay (really around there as I know it is a sanctuary zone) & Exmouth (family holiday coming up in a few weeks) - any advice appreciated.
I am mainly fishing with lures and poppers, but should I try bait up there? What seems to be more successful in anyones opinion?
Cheers for any advice
