Shovel Nose Sharks
Submitted by tommytomato on Wed, 2009-01-21 12:05Shovel Nose Sharks
What are the pro's and con's on catching or hooking into a Shovel Nose Shark.
how do you handle them, how do they feel when hooked, are they a danger, what baits are used and what rigs are use to hook these speices.
I'm planinng on fishing the South beaches near me for mulloway and I wish to know alittle more about these Shovel Nose Sharks.
any one care to fill us in on these Shovel Nose Sharks, may be a photo or two please.

Wanted (borrow): old 121.5 MHz EPIRB
Submitted by HuggyB on Tue, 2009-01-20 20:23Has anyone upgraded to the new 406MHz and have an old one lying around that I could borrow? Or have an old 121.5 MHz they wont be using for the next week and a half? I'm heading away south for Australia Day, leaving on Friday morning (23rd) and returning on Sat (31st), so if I could get use of one it would be hugely appreciated.
I'll throw a carton of beer into the equation to sweeten the deal.
- Cheers.

What to catch?
Submitted by Roger Knife on Tue, 2009-01-20 17:21Right boys
Not being local I am not sure of all your weird and wonderful species. Therefore I am asking that if you were in my shoes what would you target and how would you catch it. This might give some ideas and stop me from trying catch something that aint there!

Resturant sized marron
Submitted by NOHA on Tue, 2009-01-20 16:49
Just went away to the deep south for a few days and stopped in for lunch at a nice little place. They had marron on the menu, so of course, I had to indulge. 2 marron and salad thankyou very much. I then sat back and watched the marron in the fishtank ranging in sizes from just legal to impressive. However I was very surprised at the size of the five marron halves that where served up on my plate.
These are yabbies was my first thought!!!
The biggest may of gone 55/60mm carapace but the others where well less than that.
Can somebody tell me if it is even legal to serve up undersize marron? Im sure they have there own marron ponds so its not like they are poaching or anything like that but I still thought the marron would have to be of legal size?

How has your fishing evolved?
Submitted by Adam Gallash on Tue, 2009-01-20 09:39Just wondering how your fishing has changed/evolved over the last 5 years, do you fish more, do you fish less, are you catching more, are you catching less, is it the technology thats helping, is it the rigs, the learning of ground, the learning of techniques? Whats the trend in your fishing over the years?

Terns
Submitted by wrassinator on Mon, 2009-01-19 19:10How good are their eyesight? Was just down the beach and they were hovering about 10m above me. Each cast they tried to nail my baitcast mulie, then on retrieve they tried again.
When I actually hooked up they came closer to inspect my catch. When they realised that it was a blowi they buggered off. I eventually managed 1 x miniscule whiptail and they came over absolutely FROTHING for me to give em the whippy. They were literally like 2m from me hovering for the fish. Bugger that hooked im up as livey and pitched im back out. This time a tern dove and nailed it - line doubled over and I was on, albeit to a tern that soon let go once it realised what was going on. Cheeky buggers
30sec later the whippy was gone, maurauding bloody blowie school *BAH*
Still impressed with the eyesight on these terns though.

How is Carnarvon going for fish?
Submitted by AbooAyesha on Mon, 2009-01-19 17:31Hello,
I will be heading to Carnarvon for my (normally) annual trip on the 27th January, inshaa'Allaah. Ordinarily we would be there for several weeks and mainly fish the Quobba coast, but we may not be able to make it there this trip. We will be there until the 1st February, when we will be leaving for a week at Steep Point (our first trip to Steep Point).
So, if I may ask the following:
1) Any general reports regarding fish in Carnarvon lately? I have heard even Garth's Rock has been absolutely fishless, so how about any spots closer to the town (1 mile/estuaries/etc)? Any heads up that can be given by any locals? We will be fishing land-based.
2) Any general pointers/hints/tips about Steep Point that anyone would like to give, as it will be our first trip there? We have a spot booked on the Point, as the beach was fully booked. Any tips would be great (ie can baits be dropped deep or is the bottom reefy like Quobba?)
Thanks,
David.

gaffs
Submitted by scotto on Mon, 2009-01-19 15:32hey all,
me good mate dropped my gaff out from point perron lately in about 60 metres (on a stonkin dhu, pictures soon).
not sure what brand it was, but jeez it was a ripper. scored it at an auction for $20. it hade a nice wide gape on the hook (prob about 120mm), stainless hook of about 8-9mm diameter, on a solid thin aluminium shaft of around 15mm ish, and a foam handle with a lanyard. all up, probably around 4 foot long overall.
just wanted to know if anyone else has seen one like it, what brand it is, where i can get one, etc, etc.
OR
any other good brands youse can recomend.
the mako ones look ok. nice and solid. also the black magic fibreglass ones look the goods, but unsure about the lifespan of fibreglass.
what do youse reckon?

Saragosa 18000
Submitted by bluebagger on Mon, 2009-01-19 08:06Guys i'm in the market for new spin reel to do a bit of bottom bouncing/jigging with. While I would love a Stella or Saltiga can't warrant spending that much so I was looking at the Saragosa. Has anyone got one and given it a good workout? Also what else is there in that $4-500 range that would do the job. I've read a few people have got the Ryobis and are happy with them. Any other recommendations? Thanks.

Dive gear
Submitted by wayneleech on Sun, 2009-01-18 06:55
Hi All,
For all those divers out there I was hoping to get some feedback on dive gear. I'm just about to finish up my course and will be getting some gear next week.
At the moment I can't decided between a sherwood set (from diveimports) or and oceanic setup.
Does anyone have any feedback on either brands? The sherwood one seems slighlty better specs for the money though with being new to the game I'm not sure which way to go.
Below are the two sets I've been looking at;
Dive Import set
- Cobra BCD
- Sherwood Oasis Regulator
- Sherwood Gauge
- Performance Slimline Octopus
- wetsuit $1499
Oceanic set
- Alpha SP5 regulator
- OCeanpro BCD
- VEO 100 computer NX guage
- wetsuit
- oceanic Octopus
- dive bag $1799
cheers

Grey Band
Submitted by wrassinator on Sat, 2009-01-17 15:21Friday 16-01-09
"Deepsea Dazza" made the call and it was "goin wide"...Morning started off pretty breezy as we headed out from Peron. Luckilly the howling ENE helped push us wide...real wide. With a forecast top of 42Deg things were gunna be burnin' up.
Reached the spot about a fair steam out there and amazingly the further West we went the wind got lighter, and lighter, until it was almost glass. Hit the first drop and reached bottom after what seemed an eternity. I swear it takes about 3-4minutes of freespoolin before touchdown - bottom. Not too much finesse in it from there on in as these things hit like a train and the next thing you know the rod is doubled over. Being gusseted up in a backbrace was kinda overwhelming - but I soon found out how essential these are.
Phil was fist cab off the rank, with what turned out to be a nice 20(ish)kg Grey Band. Took him about 15mins to retreive the line back onto the spool and then we were greeted with the "bug eyed monster" from the deep. Decompression can do terrible things from this depth..
Following that the two blow-ins from the "internet" hooked up. Results are as pictured, miniscule offereings compared to Phil's fish but very welcome all the same. From here on in things got interesting.
Plenty of green eyed monsters of the deep, some knifejaws, and something I thought was REALLY REALLY going to take that smile of Phil's face. Pity that 20min later all it turned out to be was a 6ft Bronzie. Damn and released to fight (or should that be bite?) another day. But - I tell you what I was absoluted rooted after that effort. Given the max temperature recorded was 42Deg i'm blaming that in combination with my gargantuan battle wth the bronzie, and too much water too quick for what occurred next....A power chuck of water over the gunwhales (Sorry Daz and Phil) - consider it pressure cleaning??
This was met with "u want something to eat mate"? as Phil tucked into his left over bbq snags and steaks. Yeah, thanks Phil...
After purging the demons I immediately felt waay better and we headed around for more drifts. More knifejaws, more sharks, and more people happy and willing to sit out the next drift !! This stuff is killer and I can understand why ther references the boyz made to "electric reels" earlier in the day was NOT a JOKE - but reality. If you were doing this regularly - that would have to be the way to go.
Things went a little quiet out wide so we moved in, same thing, quiet, so we moved on back in and the day was getting away from us. Chilled out had a few coldies, listenend to the cricket score, the Kings Park bush fire warnings, saw the plumes of smoke towards the city and made our way back to the ramp for the inevitible SMS messages and phone calls.
All n all an awesome day out and stoked to have been able to hook up with a great bunch of guys to share a very memorable day "out wide".
Thanks again Daz and Phil for lettin me tag along on your boat, and catch one of these mythical monsters of the deep...they do exist.
Cheers,
Ado (Wrassinator)

Help with Walpole

I'm taking the boat to Walpole for a couple of days later this month. Has anyone got any advice on fishing locations down that way? Anything on types of species in the Inlet would help as well. I've heard it's a bit of a flattie/KG Mecca.
