SW dams with boat access ? * new to FW*
Submitted by bringthebung on Mon, 2014-03-31 19:12G'day everyone. New to the site it's good to have finally signed up I have been going on here for quite a while. Have found some of the pics and knowledge here useful over the years and now may be able to contribute aswell. I love all forms of fishing, grew up fishing the perth metro LB and boat and have taken quite a few trips north including the abrolhos, montees and onslow
Also enjoy the more mellow forms of the sport and this weekend was hoping to give the tinny a freshwater flush in one of the dams along with some fishing for red fin. I was hoping on Wellington dam but it doesnt appear to have a ramp.. Does anyone know which fishable dams do have boat access and if there is a maximum HP motor you can legally use.
Any help much appreciated, Cheers

Whom went out on the weekend?
Submitted by Swompa on Mon, 2014-03-31 14:28Had an early trip out on Saturday morning with my old man and the deckie dog after seeing the pics of those nice pinky's during the week. In the water at 0630 and at the top end of Garden Island.
Started in 7m of water and drifted into 12m on the first run with plenty of small nibbles. Sent back up to the top of the run and drifted again. I knew i had a good slick running as you could smell it going back into the wind (2 cans of cat food).
2nd run had a big fat wrasse and a double hook up. Mine went limp on the second pull, but my Dad managed to get his to the surface. Nice big fat NW blowie....
After a few unfortunate blows to the head, it bit through the line.
Re-baited and within a few moments, Dad was on again with the same result. A couple of more blows to the head it was gone again.
That was all we got to the boat in two hours.
I was fishing with chunks of Mackerel on a double hook setup, with a herring on a gang out the back.
When it was time to finish up, the herring was half chewed.
Anyone else go out and have any luck in Challenger Passage (between GI and CI)? There were a few boats about.

Jurien bay - revenge of the jigs
Submitted by dant on Mon, 2014-03-31 08:19Hi All,
Managed to get another leave pass up to jurien again this week end, jagged the weather for a couple of days making it another great trip.
Johnny was good enough to take the young fellahs out again with the new addition of Stokesy to his team and give the jigsgers another good hiding in our long running shit slinging bait Vs Jigs saga - alot of beers and banter the night before set the scene for a cracker of wk end, team jig -(me and browny) were confident we were going to take down the master baiters (stokesy, johnny) in our rematch.
any way off we started on friday - cracker of a day slight breeze and 31 degrees fish were fairly finicky but were taking the jigs, as usual johnny put us on the spots and we got our 8 fish for the day with everyone contributing to the bag - Browny did it again a master stroke changed the jig to SP and Wack first drop he was onto something big - after a great fight on the light gear he landed a nice 17kg and 8kg Dhuie, me just backing up the team with a big BA and baldy to consolidate the day 1 win for the jigs.
Day 1 catch - 2 x dhuies, 3 x BA, 2 x baldies and pinky
Browny with his PB happy as!, a great photo could be POTM material

Day 2
After another night of beers and banter (the jiggers doing most of the mouthing) we headed out to Cervantes for a beach launch, this was a master stroke from the old salty riding the south westerly all the way back to jurien was a very comfortable ride - well played mate.
day started fairly slow again - the jiggers hitting the scoreboard again early with a couple of BA and Baldies, with nothing much happening in the 40 - 50s, johnny decided to head out into the 80s, again a master stroke - the spot was loaded, first drop for the jiggers yielded a pinky a baby dhu, next was a nice nanny that i was pretty happy with, johnny and the baiters hit back with a cracker baldie (well done stokesy) and nice pinky - that was us pretty much bagged out for the day with boat full of baldies, BA and Pinkies, nannygai.
Last drop was called around 1 doing one more drift over the spot - i drop my haoli 240 grammer down again and suddently faaaarken wack - im onto to a freight train at 90 metres depth, ahhhh sht im in for the long haul here - starts peeling off the line, gain a colour and lose 2, rod was fully loaded for the next half hour - what a battle, something i had been wanted all trip it was an awesome feeling, this thing has so much power.
i was absolutely shattered and finally landed this thing - was a 135cm 21kg Sambo, as you can see i could hardly lift it in the photo, what a battle from 90 metres - thanked the fish for smashing me and released well.
My Nanny

Stoksys first cracker of Baldie - went 4.1kg

My arm tearer and PB Sambo - 21kg 135cm

All in all another great wk end, johnny again your a legend and thanks to a great bunch of blokes for making it even more enjoyable, and as usual i cant wait to do it again.
had to slip this in - jigs won the battle this time but the war will continue (gunner your next :) - GO THE JIGS!!!!
Cheers All again Dan

tagging pink snapper on outward bound
Submitted by uncle on Sun, 2014-03-30 18:51it was on today at port phillip bay, bloke was catching pink snapper and putting them in this catch tank which was a big net thingy, then he took them to a fisheries boat, they were floating by then. the guy vented them with a sharp needle behind the pertral fin, then the operation began. they put the pinkies to sleep, put them in a cradle thingy, slit the belly open and put in a big tag as long as your finger, stitched it up, anti biotics then 2 normal tags, into the recovery tank for 30 mins then let go, they have 50 tag recievers thru out the bay to track the pinkies, it was bloody amazing, wonder if they do it here

Shimano spheros 8000 and 12 ft beach rod
Submitted by Jimmysparks on Sun, 2014-03-30 10:37G'day fellas, in the process of deciding a new beach combo. The trusty old penn 850ssm and penn glass rod have done there job, was wanting a lighter reel and have heard good things on the spheros 8000. Tossing up whether to get a new rod too, had a look at the shimano aero wave , penn prevail and flueger crank and all seem pretty decent. If anyone has one of these, what's your verdict. Obviously being a fair bit lighter than glass , how careful do you need to be with them? I have a 9ft rovex bario with a slammer 560 and love it for tossing lures down south for tailor and salmon, nice and light and casts a mile. Have seen some pretty good deals on the spheros, but if spending a bit more on the strafic or saragosa I will. Will mainly be used for soaking baits south and north, with the reel doubling to be used on the boat for trolling, bouncing and a bit of jigging. Any input would be appreciated. Cheers

Nice Whiting Episode
Submitted by Poppy on Sat, 2014-03-29 16:38This morning I was up at 5.00am and waiting for my deckie(cousin, Neville) to arrive and hoping that the weather gods would hold off for a while. We were chasing a feed of sand whiting off Scarborough. It was fairly choppy in my little boat as we motored down from Hillarys. There were fish echos lighting up the sounder from 3 metres down to the bottom. The sea seemed chockers with fish. Anyway, our target species were few and far between and those we caught were not large. I hooked a smallish whiting and suddenly there was weight on my line. The rod bent alarmingly and it wasn't a whiting. I had it on for about 10 seconds and then lost it. I thought, "rotten norwest blowie". Next thing Nevilles rod loaded up and he was on. So again I called it for a norwester. But no. He played it to the top and he boated a nice 58cm pinkie. We were both fishing with 3kg braid with very small whiting rigs. Of course I claimed one fillet seeing that I hooked it first.

Just when I thought I had seen it all at the boat ramp....
Submitted by wrasse magnet on Sat, 2014-03-29 16:36Was launching the boat at Hillarys yesterday, I was reversing down the ramp when I see a guy come flying in front of me into another launching lane. Jeez, in a bit of a hurry I thought, but didn't pay any more attention and continued reversing down the ramp. Next minute I hear a bang from down the ramp, look up to see the guy had reversed his boat into a 4WD that was down the ramp launching already! If that wasn't bad enough it turned out the guy was an instructor from a boat school that shall remain nameless!!

Float just under the surface off Bunbury
Submitted by crano on Sat, 2014-03-29 14:28There is fairly big float set about a meter under the surface about 10 miles wnw of Bunbury.Wondering if anybody here put it there.
I dived it a few years ago and its mooring is on a patch of beach sand and there was 2 other ropes floating up that have probably had floats on them at some stage.
There is also quite a few lumps of concrete scattered around.
If the person behind this is reading this there is a bit of ground about tennis court size just east of here.I followed a couple of sambos about 60m south west and there was some ground that had a lump with 3 dhueys on it.And then there was only 2.

Kalbarri - need rod & reel ideas??
Submitted by Ben01 on Sat, 2014-03-29 11:06Hi all,
Just after some suggestions for a beach/surf combo for an upcoming trip to Kalbarri. Nothing too serious but I'm not a fan of visiting kmart for this sort of thing.
i like the look of the shimano stradics - possibly the 4000fj? Decent rod to match it with and which line?? I'm thinking 10' rod should suffice??
i won't be doing all nighters as I'll have the kids with me so I'm only really going to be chasing tailor and some of the other smaller stuff. Won't be targeting mulloway but I suppose it's always a possibility anyway.
Got a couple of other questions but I'll wait to see if I get any action here first.
Cheers.

Use of 3 hook setlines and throw net for catching baitfish from the shore
Submitted by dragrush on Sat, 2014-03-29 09:09Hi all
I have been reading the Rec Fishing guide 2013 and although I have been told a new one is being compiled now, I would like to know what the rules are as far as using a set or drop line from my boat with 3 hooks. I used to use one a while back when I would find a good fishing spot--- I would throw it over as it was attached to a large float ( a round plastic cooler bottle painted yellow ---the handle makes it easy to attach the set line to it and this just spins off the bottle when you throw it overboard) and leave it for a couple of hours then get back to it. I always fished close by but never had it attached to my boat. It used to catch some big fish and we would share them around. With the changing rules I am now confused ---does anyone know the score ---can they be used still. Has anyone had success with them.
I also see heaps of whitebait when i burly up for herring at the dawsville cut and would like to catch some for bait and food to fry up --- what is the situation here ---can I use a throw net ---how do you do this and is it worth the effort.

Coral Bay shark vid
Submitted by crano on Fri, 2014-03-28 17:22https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWxij09ku8o
The video is outside the reef at Coral Bay at a spot where a potato cod hangs out. The bloke I was with that shat shoots the fish was at the spot 2 or 3 days before and had a couple of big tigers hanging around. We decided to shoot a buff bream to fire up the 3 grey reef sharks that were hanging around and get a bit of footage.
It was amazing how sharks turned up everywhere we went.Sometimes they were under the boat waiting for us so you have to wonder if the sound of the anchor is like a dinner bell for them.
Take note of the bend in the spear when the shark takes off with it
