Canning Flats Today(18/12/2010)
Submitted by ADDICT- dUFFMAN on Sat, 2010-12-18 11:54Went for a flick in the Canning this morning to break my Swan River Flathead Duck. Ended up with no flathead and instead caugth a 32cm Tailor on a pink and yellow scorpion. The tailor hit it on the first wind of the handle and gave me a good little run on my light tackle. Iwas using a shimano sienna 2500 with 6lb Finns and 6lb Kamikaze Kieru (Cheap ebay) flourocarbon.
Still No flathead landed but got my first swan river tailor. We fish a stretch of bank from the canning bridge upstream down to mount Henry Bridge.
Birds were hitting schools of bait fish out in front of South Perth yacht club for a good 30 mins which could mean there are a few tailor around.
Any suggestions of better flathead locations would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers Duffman

Ray to Mulla ratio
Submitted by Karellean on Fri, 2010-12-17 17:57I've been going mulla fishing probably once a fortnight over the last 2 summers for no success.
But....... the rays!
Been using strip baits, whole dead herring or yellowtail and livies if I can get them.
Tried the river, metro beaches and rockwalls and caught nothing but rays... LOTS of rays.
Sometimes 3 or 4 in a session
Just wondering if some of the experienced mulla fisho's could tell me how many rays you have to deal with before you can expect a mulla?
Also, weed report on s-bend/flatrock ?

Drag settings and length of fish runs
Submitted by 2fish on Thu, 2010-12-16 19:10looking to buy a Saltiga LD to target a variety of fish, eg Trout, Dhuies, Tuna, Cod, Sambos
anything big and inbetween, using a variety of techniques eg bottom bouncing, jigging, trolling, LBG
Most of my fishing has been limited to landbased Tailor, Salmon, Bream, Flathead.
So I have not had much experience in the selection of line class, drag settings and the expected length of a fishs run
for these bigger species.
I am looking to use 50-60 pound braid and rule of thumb says that the drag should be about 1/3.
Just wonding what you guys and gals typically use for drag settings when targeting Trout, Dhuies, Tuna, Cod, Sambos
and how much line do these bigger fish run with when hooked. How much line should be on the reel for chasing these fish.

Any Mandurah Crabs Yet?
Submitted by wazzbat on Thu, 2010-12-16 16:34Hey all.
Just wondering if anyone has got a feed of crabs down Mandurah way lately? I remember reading a report a couple of weeks back that there were heaps down there but not many sized ones. Is it a bit easier to get a feed yet? I'll be heading down anyway with a couple of mates so we'll see how we go. I've never tried, but I thought I might take some snorkel gear with me this time and have a crack at diving for them? Am I likely to have a better chance at that then using drop nets?

New quad bikes for Fisheries Department
Submitted by bod on Thu, 2010-12-16 08:46New quad bikes improve Fisheries’ access to metro beaches - Fisheries Department media release 15 December 2010
Regional Manager Tony Cappelluti said the new patrol boat was now based at Rockingham and, for the first time, Fisheries and Marine Officers would have quad bikes to access popular beach fishing areas.
“The $270,000 patrol boat is already providing the Fisheries Officers with a fast, stable platform to carry out a range of patrol duties between Fremantle and Mandurah and up to 30 nautical miles offshore,” Mr Cappelluti said. “It has an operating range of more than 200 nautical miles.”
The 8.5 metre, Naiad-design, Rigid Inflatable Boat replaces a seven metre aluminium plate design patrol vessel and provides officers with a much safer platform, for seaworthiness and for boarding other vessels, making it easier to pull alongside for compliance checks. It can carry up to four personnel and has a top speed above 40 knots.
Mr Cappelluti said demersal fishing for recreational fishers reopens in the West Coast Bioregion from tomorrow (16 December) and the new patrol boat would help officers ensure the rules were being observed. It would be useful in a range of other compliance duties too.
“Education of fishers is an important role for the officers who also oversee crab fishing, which has opened in Cockburn Sound today and runs until 30 April,” he said. “They will continue monitoring the annual pink snapper closure that is in place to the end of January in both Sounds.
“The officers work to get the ‘fish for the future’ message across to both recreational and commercial fishers. They also monitor the local aquaculture industries and perform duties in the new Shoalwater Islands Marine Park. Cockburn and Warnbro Sounds are part of a fast-growing region and we must have the appropriate equipment to manage the fisheries.”
Mr Cappelluti said Fisheries and Marine Officers would deliver a more effective land based compliance and education service, by having better coastal access with its two quad bikes.
“The two quad bikes will enable officers to carry operational equipment and access much larger areas than previously possible during patrols,” he said. “The quad bikes will also provide officers with fast coverage of the coastal strip for fisheries work and for emergency management situations, when working jointly with Police and local authorities.”
Details on the fishing rules that apply in the Rockingham region (which is part of the West Coast Bioregion) are available online at www.fish.wa.gov.au.

I have never caught either of the above species, and would love to do so. Some folks have already been very helpful with information, but i was wondering if any can advise on any good locations to catch the above fish from the shore, or could avise me on good baits, rigs etc.
Cheers,

Cervantes beach launch
Submitted by mightymouse on Wed, 2010-12-15 20:25Hi Guys
I am looking at heading up to Cervantes and as there is no boat ramp what is it like to launch/retreive a medium to large boat .
I have a 26ft F/glass boat with a small 3t truck to tow with does anyone know if this would be ok on Cervantes beach to retreive as the beach drops off quickly (so I am told) worried that the trailer tyes would get me stuck on the beach.
Has anyone on this site done this
Is there guys with tractors on the beach or at the town center to help ?
Thanks for any info

What's the best way to dispatch a big fish?
Submitted by r.gates on Wed, 2010-12-15 19:49Hi all
With the upcoming demersal ban lifting tomorrow, not that the weather is going to be any good for fishing
, and myself being new to fishing for these bigger fish, I was wondering what's the best and most humane way to dispatch a large fish?
For smaller fish, I use the 'knife between the eyes' technique, then slit the throat to bleed them....can't see this working too well with big jewies, snapper, mackeral, etc, as they've got a much harder skull!

Sunnies
Submitted by One Eyed Phil on Wed, 2010-12-15 09:38Hi All
I guess it's like asking how long is a piece of string, but,
Any recommendations on sunnies for LB fishing?
I did have a pair of Fuglies but they were pinched out of my vehicle with my GPS unit!
I'm not intereted in paying for designer names for now reason other than to be 'cool'.
I want a decent pair of polarised glasses that alllow me to really see below the surface, and preferably scrath reistant
I'm aware there are sponsors on this site that deal with sunnies but I'm reaaly after sunnies that suit my purpose rather than ONLY supporting a sponsor and not being satisfied with my purchase.
If I can do both then well and good!
Thanks
Phil

Crabbing in Harvey Estuary
Submitted by Hobie-Wan on Wed, 2010-12-15 09:09I am heading down to around Harvey estuary this weekend, with some overseas visitors, and thought it would be fun trying to wade/scoop for crabs. The only problem with that is, I've never done it before. So not wanting to look like an idiot, I thought I would check with the knowledgable people on this board for some tips. (I did the search and found a bit of info). My questions are really just: Is it just as easy as wading around with a scoop net on a pole, grabbing crabs as you see them? Can anyone tell me a good spot on the Harvey estary? and finally what is the best time of day to do this?
Any info is much appreciated.
