Fisheries is Watching

Took the boys out for a fish this morning as we moved the pots deeper onto the corals last week, so we could seek KGs and Sambos when conditions allow.  Have done it a couple of times recently with success, except for the crays which have all been berried, tar spot, setose or undersized males.  The pots will come in for the whites soon.

We rebaited and moved our pots around and when done, sent 6kg of shred and fish based burley to the bottom.  At this time of year it is small hooks, light gear, soft drags and any decent fish is brought up very slowly so if it is a demersal it can be successfully released.  Lots of action, and it was good to see the boys land some Sambos.

My highlight was getting back to the wash down bay and having a chat with the Fisheries Officer.  He knew my boat, when we picked up the pots from inshore to move them, how we used the Minn Kota when pulling pots, where we actually pulled our pots up to on the boat and who was with me at the time.  Awesome work Fisheries.

I asked about common offences at the ramp.  It was really quite disturbing to hear what people do with “white line cray fever”, but refreshing that Fisheries is policing this behaviour.

Parking ticket last Saturday

Hi Guys

Like heaps of you I took advantage of last Saturdays weather and launched at
Ocean Reef at 9.30am.
After I launched I tried to find a car parking spot but it was all full, so
I bought a ticket and parked on an island in the car park.
The car and trailer did not block traffic or any footpath but when I returned
I had a ticket on the windscreen.( For not parking in a marked parking bay)
I'm sure heaps of tickets have been issued for the same scenario ,he anyone
challenged this fine and been successful ??

Cheers

Looking for a lift from Perth to Dongara this Thursday

 Hi all....

Just wondering if anyone is heading to Dongara this Thursday arvo that wouldn't mind having an extra passenger??.....

White run

So we're all set to drop the pots on Saturday for the first time this year. Hoping our timing is as good as last year. Anyone else dropping for the first time this year?

Weed at the beach

It seems every time I go down the beach to try and catch a Herring or Tailor I spend my whole time pulling weed off my line/lure before I give up.

Does anyone have any strategies for dealing with weed at the beach to help a beginner out?

A warning bell is sounded for all fishos hear it well

In the Sunday Times newspaper of November 6 page 03 of the life style section there was a half page story concerning the state of the fishery in the Mandurah Estuary.

This story was written by a fishing journalist who is IMO greatly respected in WA.
The story is headed "Commercial threat to estuary anglers.
The first couple of paragraphs of the story point out what an important fishery the Mandurah/Harvey estuary is to amateur fishos and how just recently the [professional fishermen who work this water way received the granting of a sustainable fisheries acknowledgement from the MSC (a world body) who oversee fisheries for their sustainability,

This acknowledgement was for the way the Blue swimmer crab and Mullet fishery is managed, and the professional fishermen catching this fish species should be acknowledged as I'm sure the world body doesn't had out this type of thing willy nilly.

Now for the bad news and why all amateur fishos who chase yellow fin whiting in this water way should become alarmed, the article in the paper correctly points out what great eating and sporting fish to catch on light gear these fish are, and how important these fish are to amateur fishos.

The future of this fishery is under great threat of being decimated by over exploitation of the bio mass by the actions of those same people who have been acclaimed as engaging in sustainable fishing for Blue swimmer crabs and Mullet.

The sustainability of the yellow fin whiting was not raised by any body.

Since 2011 the commercial take of yellow fin whiting has risen from around 8 tonnes to 29.6 tonnes in 2015.

Recfishwest the peak body for amateur fishos in this state has rung the warning bell for this species of fish as well as the take of blue swimmer crabs, the majority of which where taken by amateur fishos in the 90 since then the majority is now taken by the professional fishermen.

The article then goes on to quote various agreements on the sustainable take considered to be allowed and keep the stokes of various species at a sustainable level and names the people who should be contacted about this situation and your views of the current situation make very clear to.

I have the view that there is a place for the professional fishing in the estuary, however I strongly believe that there are too many pros operating in this rather small expanse of water and unless something drastic is done and rather quickly we are all going to wake up one morning and wonder where all the yellow fin whiting have gone.

I don't have any letters after my name indicating that I have formal qualifications in this matter, just my observations of what is going on in my back yard over recent years.

If we don't want to lose a fantastic fishery we all need to get of our backsides and make our views know to our politicians...NOW

I would like to thank Mr Scott Coghlan for bringing this situation out into the day light and making a lot of people aware of how dire things are getting down here with regard to pressure being put on a small fishery.

Quobba Helium Ballooning Advice

Hi all

Headed to Quobba in a couple of weeks and planning (Weather permitting) to do some helium Balooning.

We have an idea of what rigs and bait to use, but are mostly interested in how to connect the baloon to the line.

I have had a look at a few youtube videos and am unsure how they have managed to have the bait in the water and yet the balloon 15-20m above.

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Also keen to hear any recent quobba reports.

Cheers

Jeddy

Which is easier pulling pots or diving for crays? *Now with a video*

After a dive on Saturday where we had a big male Western Blue Groper following us around for the entier dive, sometimes I do wonder. I am happy to say I did manage to keep all my fingers intact.

So I have also now added a short video of the dive.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXdWFihJun8

Burley Sausages

After finalising the “recipe” for our fish based burley through extensive trials, purchasing the equipment to make it in 100kg+ batches, it was time to get the packaging method right.  I still like the minced fish based burley products, although our shredded products tend to be the bigger sellers.  It is a fine grained mix that disperses more slowly in the water column, contains a variety of commercially caught fish species and has a lot of tuna oil.  It has proven to be an excellent attractor of all types of different species, including those that can be caught during the ban.

Our old method was to place the burley in moulds for freezing however this was proving to be messy (the burley needs to be the consistency of thick toothpaste and is very sticky) and time consuming.  Taking the tried and tested method that butchers use to make sausages, we made an extrusion nozzle for the mixer/mincer so that we could make “long logs”.

Gave it a test yesterday to make 130kg for an upcoming competition.  It is fair to say it worked a treat.

Once the “sausages” have frozen down properly, we can cut them using a band saw to appropriate lengths and vacuum seal.

The logs have a diameter of 100mm, but I guess the question is what is the ideal length to cut them?  Perhaps there are a few variations?  Any comments about this would be appreciated.  Cheers.  Mick

Jumbo time

Plenty of life out their yesterday nice school of dhus on one spot and sambos queenies skippy in 30 m some good crays too

Best GT Fishing destination

Wanting to head up to the Northwest for a break with my partner next year, a big G has been towards the top my bucket list for a while now. I was hoping some of you could recomend a good charter operator out of either Broome or Exmouth? and also time of year that would be the best. I would preffer to go somewhere we can do the other touristy stuff and kick back as well but the main aim of the trip will be to smash some Geets.

Cheers

Abrolhos Islands with Reel Affair 18-21 April 2017

Hi guys.  I made the big plunge and booked Reel Affair for a family and friends charter in April.  The boat can take a maximum of 10 and there is one spot available for a fisho from this forum to join us.  So far we have 6 guys and 3 ladies coming, so it doesn't have to be a guy.  A gal will be made most welcome.  The cost is $1,520.00 and that includes all gear, bait and a qualified cook to feed us.  Mark Ridley (skipper) is a professional fisherman who has spent a lot of years fishing the Abrolhos and his 57 ft boat is surveyed for 10 people to sleep on board.  The Fishing WA crew filmed an episode from the boat recently and Harry was very impressed with Mark's knowledge and ability to put them onto fish.

Have a look at their website on reelaffair.com.au or their facebook page at Reel Affairs.

I have paid a 20% deposit for 10 people which is non-refundable, so a single deposit ($304.00) can be paid to me now and the balance 3 weeks before the charter.

PM me if you are interested or need additional information.
