New baitcaster - explanation required
Submitted by randall df223 on Wed, 2012-07-04 20:51I have just picked up a new ugly stick predator rod and baitcaster reel which is to become my squidding rig. I have never used a baitcaster before. Now, I understand the the lever in the middle that releases the spool for casting, and i understand the star drag, and i understand the thumb screw adjacent to the handle that should be adjusted so the sinker falls slowly to the floor when free spool is engaged (for casting resistance).
But what I can't work out is that on the far side (opposite to the handle, star drag and thumb screw), is a dial, numbered 1 - 10 (anti-clockwise), that has incremental settings. I cannot work out what that actually changes as far as the other moving parts is concerned.
Can anyone explain that one to me?

NOR Landbased fishing
Submitted by mucsavage on Wed, 2012-07-04 14:13Hows it going lads,
I'm living around Joondalup. I'm wanting to get out saturday, will be working 12 hours days thursday and friday, and also working Over time Sunday,
so Saturday will be my day to get back some of my sanity.
Can any of you recommend a beach or rock wall, groyne, that is worth hitting up for the day saturday. Somewhere that is getting good reports lately for at least a few decent bread and butter fish, if anything.
Willing to travel a small bit but within reason.
If anyone wants to join me or meet up somewhere for a few hours. That would be good. I have all my own gear and always nice to have a fellow fisho along for the chat and bit of banter.

tourists and muddies
Submitted by Carry on Wed, 2012-07-04 11:17Gday all got a gripe at the moment about a couple tourists up our way in point samson i spoke to a grey nomad the other day about doing a bit of house minding for me when i go away he said he wasnt able to do it but he knew someone in the park that may be able to help me out he said he would send me a text and let me know anyway we soon started talking fishing and he was telling me that the couple he was going to ask have been out every day for quite a while and in the past two weeks have pulled over 150 muddies and been giving them away and even selling a few now dont get me wrong i dont have a hatred for tourists i meet some quite colourful characters and i even take a few fishing when spots are available on my boat but the thought of that many crabs going out of the local creeks from one fisher is bullshit i think that is why tourists do get a bad name also i have herd the same story from other people so wether its true or not i dont know but the fisheries are aware so we will see where it goes.In all the years i have lived up here i have never herd of such greed not to say that all locals are all angels either im sure theres a few bad eggs amongst us but i would hope to think not anyway thats my gripe interested to hear yor thoughts.

Soaked
Submitted by SABRE on Wed, 2012-07-04 08:17Hey guys went fishing at Hillarys last night. one of the guys i was fishing with had a brain fart while casting and his fishing rod ended up in the drink. Was sitting for about 10 minutes before we could retieve it. What would be the best thing to do with the reel now-its an abu garcia so not a cheap reel. Would having it serviced be the best course of action ?
ps lots of herring action off the lighthouse point and a baby tailor.

Jigging gloves?
Submitted by cudbfishn on Wed, 2012-07-04 07:35To all those hardcore jiggers out there.
Had a quick search and couldnt find anything but was just wondering on the purpose of jigging gloves? Are they worth shelling out for or is it more of a wank factor. Just wondering coz I have never had any problems with holding onto my rod (so to speak) and I hate wearing gloves.
Any opinions? Thanks in advance.

Afew months back you needed a couple of big people with soft ball bats around your car or you could bet on coming back to a broken window.Any current news appreciated

just seeing if anyone has used the Torsa? Looking at a 30 to spool with 50lb. Shimano talk it up and seems to be pretty beefy but would always like a second opinion before shelling out some coin.

Attention Jigging newbies
Submitted by hlokk on Mon, 2012-07-02 11:35So, i'm doing up a few videos to help people out with some information on how to jig. I was originally just doing some rigging videos but realised there was a whole lot more that could be covered. There are quite a few videos out there on youtube, but a lot of them just waffle on a lot, and when they are good, they're in block low res, so all videos will be nice and clear and in HD.
It makes a bit more sense to look forward and figure out how to lay it all out in a constistent format than just go through randomly, so I need help from you guys:
Which aspects do you guys want to know more about?
Do you want videos on plastic fishing too?
If you knew how to rig up your jigs and work them, what other information would you want to know? Gear selection, setup, finding fish, different types/depths/etc, fighting techniques, etc?
I know these will be useful to a few people, but I need constructive feedback on what you guys want. What will help you get into jigging? What cant you find answers on? What never made sense to you? What knots or rigging do you struggle with? What things do you want to know the reason for?
And if you're a jigging ace, I think it would be a good idea to get a few different people in front of the camera, so if you're up for that, let me know. Also, on the offchance there are any divers who dont mind getting into the water for some filming, that would be rather cool too ;) Or better yet, anyone know somewhere with a heated pool a few m deep we can go jig in? ;) haha.

Number of dhuies around
Submitted by Bodie on Mon, 2012-07-02 10:26Wondering if everyone else is noticing the high number of dhuies about at the moment?
This time of year i always find the dhu's are schooling up, however the last couple of trips have produced even higher numbers. Most of them are nothign special in terms of size. The ones kept are usually between 5-8 KG's and many undersized ones about.
Did try jigging for them but all i could manage were rat sambos!!
Last 2 trips would have produced 20 dhus. and in probably some of the most fished waters in the metro area, south of rotto. And all within 2-3 hours of fishing each day.
Yesterdays ones were caught on ground that i woudlnt even normally blink and eye at, except i notec some fish sitting on it. Result was 7 dhu's in 3 drifts. the little ones are pretty hardy, none needed to go back on the release weight, and all took off like a bat out of hell when released.
Anyone else noticing the increased numbers around lately?

Advice/Expertise needed - Shark Bay fishing
Submitted by timboon on Mon, 2012-07-02 09:42FW Crew,
Heading up with the 14 ft dingi to do some fishing on the East side of Shark Bay...We`re talking just West of Nth West Coastal highway.
Having never fished the area through there your advice would be grand from those that have...
It all looks pretty shallow with some deeper gutters throughout.
Whats the ground like? Will I be looking for structure & reef or is it best to just fish the drop offs? Anchor or Drift - Baits or SP`s? Snapper & Spango`s or will I likely find some Blue Bone & Baldies....?
Any advice as usual from you guys will help alot,
Timboon
