steep point in july?

contemplating a trip to steep in july. have only really fished there when the water is warm. has anyone fished there during the cooler months with success. im guessing the bottom species will still be there but pelagics? ytk? been in tassie and the trout just dont cut the mustard. my ears are craving the sound of screaming drags. any thoughts?

Jigged Blue

Caught a Blue Groper on a jig yesterday, not the biggest I've seen but still a first for me. A FCL did the damage.

Abu Garcia STX20

Hey guys how are we all,
The Abu Garcia stx 20 reel, has anyone had any experience with this reel, whats it like?, I've heard alittle bit about it, just want some of your guys opinions on it, so if anyones got anything it would be good to hear, thanks Rick

good all round rod

hey guys,

im thinking of buying a daiwa saltist lever drag 2 speed reel about size 40 or 50, i would be putting 30 or 40 pound line on it. i was just wondering what size rod i should buy.

i would be reef fishing, jigging and trolling from a boat aswell as balloning from shore for small to medium sized sharks.

so i basically need a rod that can handle everything.

i was thinking of a shimano t-curve.

Mullet - Day, night or both?

so when's the best time to fish for mullet in your opinion?

saltwater flies

seen these??

they look to be working pretty well over east ,  fished on the bottom like a driftbait rig.   quite interesting.

coral bay windy times?

hey all,

when i planned my last tip to coral bay i was told im mad coz it will be too windy (was in january) and that i should go mid year so were going to do another trip late june when it is meant to be more calm, but looking on the BOM site june/july 2011 was alot more windy than January 2011 + 2012, am i missing something??

When to join a group

Hey guys

I've been fishing out of Hillarys and ocean reef for close on four years now,and have been looking out deep for the wrecks/barges.The dilema is when do you join a group of boats thinking they are on well known marks?,and when don't you? No one likes a "pinger", especially if you are fishing in the areas you have invested time in finding.

Quobba beach

Was after any advice on navigating my 4.5m quintrex out from quobba beach. We have a hilux so hoping to launch successfully and then get out for a fish if the swell and wind are favorable. Heading up next week so any advice would be appreciated

Google Earth

was just wondering if anyone knew a way to distinguish deep drop offs from reefs, i think i have found a decent spot with a nice drop off within casting distance from the beach but im not sure if it is a massive chunk of reef.

if anyone has experience with reading sattelite images and knows a way to distinguish these things from each other, your help would be much appreciated

Where to get mussels

G'day guys just wondering if anyone knows where to get some fresh mussels don't know if I'd get them out of the river not to sure if there safe to eat. Any pointers be appreciated

GTs and Marlin in Carnarvon

Going to be fishing Carnarvon for the first time in a couple of weeks, and not really sure what to expect.

Have had a quick look at charts, but just wanting an idea as to what to chase. Do people pop for GTs around the islands with much success? Also I know I have seen posts of Marlin caught around Koks etc, but is this a common occurrence? Or more just good luck?

Just dont want to spend a heap of time trolling (or casting) for nothing. Looking at the charts it seems you need to go a really long way to find some deep dropoffs, so thinking marlin not a prime target.

Any help appreciated!

Dan

Outboard engine cover

So, I go and get my boat serviced again before my trip to shark bay next week, from the same place in Bunbury that I have done for the last 5 years(Millard's), and when I get home I notice that the outboard cover is missing like it was last year, they took it off and forgot to put it back on, another trip back to Bunbury to pick  it up :(. I ring them and ask is it still there and they say not it got put back on, I explain it's not on there and then I get told it hasn't been off. I question it again, this time it's been just rolled up a bit then rolled back down, it must of blown off or someone stole it on my way home from Bunbury, but the big Velcro strap was def put back on,even the receptionist seen it.By now I'm a bit Argo, called the manager and he said he has never seen one come off before, except this one. I explain the grease on the engine cowling and he is at a loss. All he can do is go halves in a new cover, and he said he doesn't want to loose my business because I've been there since I've had my boat.

All I can say is F$&K

I know it's a bit of a winge , just had to vent a bit

Sorry guys

Kununurra

Hey, I'll be up in kununurra next week to visit my sister, I will be takeing a bait caster for sure. Was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of some land based fish?

Sambo Jigging

Hey lads

Just got back from a recent trip to exmouth, did a bit of bottom jigging with octojigs man they catch fish! But anyway it refired my passion for jigging and i wanna head out from Perth with one of the charter mobs and do a day sambo jigging.

Can anyone give me 1st hand knowledge on a good charter to use and what is the best time of year over here to get stuck into a monster sambo?

Also if anyone is keen for some jiggin, has a boat and experiance with finding Sambos and could use some fuel payed for let me know.

Cheers for any info

Chris

Auto pilot connection to Lowance HDS

Braid for popping

Looking to spool up my saragosa 18000 for exmouth.  It will get used GT popping, trolling and jigging.  Since Ive had a good run with the tournament accudepth in 40lb for spinning up there im looking at the 85lb for this.  My popping rod is rated for 100lb but jigging only 80lb.

Question is how much capacity will I need for popping?.  The saragosa should fit the 300m spool of braid in plus some extra so Im thinking of getting some cheap 50lb braid to go behind it.

Thoughts?

Exmouth 2012 Boys Trip Trophies

What do you think? It isnt serious, just for fun.

3 Trophies:
1.       “Exmouth Open 2012 Champion” (Mini Golf Winner)
2.       “Exmouth Billfish Competition 2012 Winner” (Longest billfish of the trip, marlin/sailfish)
3.       “Exmouth 2012 Horses Ass Award” (The person who makes the biggest idiotic of themselves, ie putting petrol in a diesel car, forgetting the keys, launching without putting the bung in)

1 Plaque

“Annual Exmouth Pilgrimage Fishing Champion” – This is a wooden plaque and each years winner gets their name added to it for that year (and gets to keep it in their house till the next year)

Fishing Champion is the person whose total of their longest Trevally,  Pelagic (excl billfish) and Demersal for the trip is the biggest. From memory last year there was 3 of us around the 3m mark (1.3m Mackie, 70cm Spangledy & 1m trevally).

Changing props

Hey guys ive got a 15hp mercury outboard and wanting to get more speed out of it,one of my mates mentioned getting a new prop with a higher pitch, which equals higher overall speed, just wanting to see if this is a good idea or a waste of time, if if uses more petrol and if anybody has put new props on to make their boat faster

Cheers Nick
